4:40 its actually true, no cap. "barbarian, word derived from the Greek bárbaros, used among the early Greeks to describe all foreigners, including the Romans. The word is probably onomatopoeic in origin, the “bar bar” sound representing the perception by Greeks of languages other than their own."
I remember back during the Sopranos reactions Bralik mentioned he had never seen Gladiator and Formal being flabbergasted and was like "Bro, we definitely need to react to Gladiator one day". I love FRR easter eggs and foreshadowing! 😆👌
Had to subscribe with this reaction. Love how real but aware you guys are of what is happening during the movie. Keep it up, looking forward to watching past reactions too, cheers!
I will NEVER not click on a reaction to this movie. Love this joint. Didn't really need or want a sequel but Denzel and Pedro sold me, definitely gonna go see it.
I am impressed by the one who's watching for the first time. You're VERY perceptive n pick up on things most don't on their first viewing! It is very refreshing!
What ever happened to Marcus Aurelius? The strong, silent type. That was a Roman! He wasn't in touch with his feelings. He just did what he had to do. See, what they didn't know was once they got Marcus Aurelius in touch with his feelings that they wouldn't be able to shut him up! And then it's meditations this, and meditations that, and meditations va fungool!
This was the best Russell Crowe movie but a close second in my opinion is Cinderella Man. Great true story about a depression era boxer. Basically depression Rocky but true. Crowe was also great in American Gangster though definitely second fiddle to Denzel Washington.
Marcus Aurelius passing over Commodus for Maximus would actually have been the norm in Ancient Rome. It was customary for the Emperor to "adopt" a very competent politician/general and groom them to be emperor. In fact in actual history, Commodus was the first biological son to succeed his father as emperor which created a lot of controversy and is seen as the end of the Roman Golden Age. Also in real life Commodus did fight as a gladiator and to the surprise of no one was undefeated.
Russell Crowe was in The Insider. Inside Man is a Spike Lee joint with Denzel Washington, Chiwetel Edjiofor, and Clive Owen. It's a *great* movie 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Now that you’ve seen this you have to watch the 1960 Spartacus. See if Chrissie was right or not. Kidding aside it’s actually still entertaining even today and perfectly captures a unique moment in Hollywood, when they were obsessed with grand scale historical epics.
Hans Zimmer is the music composer. He's a genius and I don't think people understand that he's our modern Mozart. He's actually done a ton of movies we've seen as kids and growing up. Rain Man, Lion King (animated), Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean, the batman trilogy, Inception, and interstellar. That's all I remember but the dude is a genius. Def recommend looking his work up on your our time. Great reaction fellas!
Comparing anyone with Mozart is ludicrous ... because Mozart started at age 6 ... died at 35 ... and he (allegedly) holds the record of "length of travel in a carriage without suspension" (I doubt this one is true, but someone calculated it and came up with hundreds of thousands of kilometers).
27:23 It’s already been stated that in Gladiator II, an adult Lucius finds out that Maximus is actually his father. If you remember in that earlier conversation with Lucilla (Commodus sister) that her son and Maximus’s son were both the same age. So Maximus and her had a tryst on the down low.
That IS the origin of the word "barbarian". It's a very common thing. For example Slavs called the Germanic people (and still call the Germans) "nemtsi", which means "mutes", cause they spoke a different language.
Talkin' 'bout watching a mini-series, y'all gotta watch the Australian cult series ''Mr. Inbetween''! It's right up your alley, an extremely violent and very funny crime show. One of the best series ever made (only 3 seasons and the episodes are around 25 minutes each, some longer).
My college neighbor had everyone over basically every night. We had 3 DVD's - Gladiator, Jaws, and Full Metal Jacket, we watched em like 50 times a piece.
25:13 Y’all cut out one of my favorite lines from the movie, makes me laugh every time 😂 “I did not say I knew him! I said he touched me on the shoulder once!” After Maximus laughs when Proximo tells him that Marcus Aurelius was the emperor that freed him from being a slave in the fighting arenas Hope Brallic got a good laugh out of that one!
Another RC movie that in my opinion doesn't receive the love it should is Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. One of my personal RC movies. Check it out!
Rome - at its height - had a population size of ONE MILLION PEOPLE ... which is quite big, if you have to supply them with food / clean up garbage ... with WAGONS and SHIPS (as usual for old cities, Rome has a river).
This reaction was a pleasure to watch from start to finish. It is the BEST feeling to watch people exude sheer joy for their love of a film. Thank you.
@ frr I haven’t yet had the pleasure so I’ll have to check it out then beforehand. Spartacus is more a gladiator story. If you guys were interested. Anyhow, as far as films go, have you seen 1408? Pretty good horror movie. Also a Stephen king adaptation. If not, I’d love if y’all could watch that
Getting stabbed through the armpit was SUPER dangerous. You already mentioned the lungs but theres also a lot of arteries in the armpit. You would die in seconds.
I used to be a history teacher, and I'm Greek. Your teacher was not making things up. The origin of the word barbarian comes from Greek and many historians think that the barbarbar thing is likely😅
@22:50 "That's wild. How you can take that whole segment right there, and apply it to today." Indeed. Let's all hope Commodus doesn't get elected in four days.... And that's coming from someone who remains (very very tenuously at this point) a registered member of Commodus' party. We need a Spaniard to step up...
Check out Parenthood!!! Great little comedy, Jaoquin is about 13. Still using his given name which was Leaf Phoenix. Small part but really. Good. Stacked cast in that movie, Keanu, Steve Martin, Jason Robards, and more
I can't find if you've reacted to "the haunting of hill house" an amazing short series. It is a must to watch. Please don't wait till next halloween to do it
God dude for real ... cmon ... the low back is fulla organs to puncture. You think its all just bacon down there or what? Hahah ... & someone like Commodus who trained in combat would have that anatomical knowledge. It was a precision shiv he knew wouldn't result in immediate death
8:10 "These fools are completely outclassed" ... and yet it is "these fools" (germans) who will END THE ROMAN EMPIRE. Look up Arminius / Hermannsschlacht / battle of the Teutoburg forest ... Rome could NOT RECOVER after losing 3 entire legions and a bunch of support troops, which made them weak against attacks from the outside or inside.
The likelihood of Juba returning home would not have been zero at all--although slavery was widespread in Rome then, it simply was not seen through the same racial lens as here. New slaves were drawn from conquered peoples on the edge of the empire, criminals allowed to live, and the down and out. Juba was now under legal protection as free, and could have argued his case to any official empire, and what trader would dare take him mano a mano anyway? As far as knowing how to get home, come on, Rome to Carthage was like NYC to Philly, one boat ride away. The ancient world lacked travel speed we're used to, but people knew how to get around.

Time for Spartacus, the original gladiator epic. Kirk Douglas and Sir Laurence Olivier
That barbarian thing is true tho 😭
The barbarian thing is actually true. The Roman joke was it sounded like "barbarbar", hence they called them "barbarus".
If this was your introduction to Russel Crowe I have to suggest mine; Romper Stomper. Dark and gritty but a great film.
