Building the V-Bottom Skiff - Episode 27: Fairing the hull for our 2-part epoxy barrier coat primer

  • The next step on our V-Bottom Skiff is to fair the entire hull and apply our epoxy barrier coat. The hull needs to be planed first to get any of the high spots that are found near the steeple grain. We're then going to use TotalFair as our compound to fill all the screw holes and any other imperfections. Once that dries we can come back the next day and sand it down nice a fair so we can apply our TotalProtect 2-part epoxy barrier coat primer.

There are still a few of us left that can recollect, or still experience, the satisfaction of completing repairs, modifications, and regular sanding & painting of wooden boats down here in Chesapeake Bay. Epoxy, one-part urethanes, and acrylics give us a little longer time between paint jobs, but it is still a helluva chore. When commercial fishing was truly profitable, we would hire professional painters to prep & paint the boats for us. We learned from them how to get a mirror / polished fiberglass - like finish with plain old Pettit Z-Spar 99 over the 105 high build primer with judicious application of finishing sanders, penetrol, & thinners.
It would last 15-18 months, depending on how harsh the winters were, and what type of work in which we were engaged.
Brings back semi-sweet memories Lou. Even when I was a kid, in the '70's, there were a dozen wooden shipwrights in the lower Bay, but they are all gone, today. Their boats, live on, though. You immediately recognize and can distinguish Lin Price's, from Alton Smith&Edward Digg's, and Grover Lee Owens's from Francis Smith's, or Dotsie Coates's vessels.
Gotta go have a drink, now, to shove down the lump in me throat.
    GOD bless you Lou.

Back in the early 1960s, my dad and I had a 20 foot deadrise built by a boat builder named Smith near Mathews Virginia. I’d love to know the name of his yard so I could do a little homework and figure out exactly where our boat was built. My family would stay at a place called Pine Hall on Stutt’s Creek, near Matthews and we would go bottom fishing out through Hole In The Wall into the Bay. Wonderful memories of a wonderful time and place. Ned

Alton Smith was likely the builder of your deadrise skiff.
He had an apprentice name Edward diggs who continued his model and went on to build some of the finest decked boats and open deadrise work boats ever built. Alton Smith's yard was in Pepper Creek on the Mobjack Bay side until the 60s when he moved around to Horn Harbor,( Chesapeake Bay side).

@@jaydubbyuh2292 Thanks, Jay. I believe you are right because I recall, thought I was only about 12 years old, driving through Mathews Courthouse and continuing for a few miles to the yard. We visited the yard several times during our boat's construction, which was of course a joy for a 12 year old. And I'll say, then, in the early 60's the Bay was alive with waterman doing their work. Wonderful memories. Ned

I see the old boats like that in great shape, and know people who run them. I have to say the ship builders are far and few between like you said, but I am studying to be an engineer and naval architect and I enjoy woodworking, and I want to bring the aspect of wooden boat building of sport fishers and workboats and skiffs alike back to the lower bay. It would be amazing to be behind a yard building boats, it’s like a tradition around here not many know about. I study the way they designed a lot of the boats and work on them, and a well built boat (basically the only ones left) are truly beautiful woodworking. The painting process and modding is very fun, I am building a small skiff currently

I might be wrong! I want to say that first, so no one jumps to assume I'm being too critical.
Are we absolutely sure that all that planning couldn't be done with a 6-inch sander? I mean a really good one.
I have a red oak floor that was cupped and scooped and warped. I decided to buy a $600+ festool sander. It's a 6-inch, powerful with great dust collection. I forget the model number.
But it worked so well. I'm almost certain that it's the tool for this job.
Not that everyone wants to spend 600 on a sander, but Bosch also makes one, and that one was just under $300.
They look like angle grinders and probably have a similar motor. It's extremely powerful, and the dust collection is fantastic. I used a shop vac. I'm not spending 800 on a festool vacuum for crying out loud. I had to use tape to make it seal properly.
Lou said it took him half a day? With that sander going through the grits to a paintable surface would be faster and easier in my opinion. However!
I'm no good with a hand plane, so my opinion is not to be taken too awful seriously.

I stay away from white on a boat because I love to fish and the white is common on large predator fish and it scares away the fish I'm trying to catch. I catch way more saltwater fish with colors other than white.

@@TipsfromaShipwrightvideos The worst is a white bottom boat, looks like the underside of a shark, an Orca, etc. I prefer a darker color on the bottom, the dark red bottom paint is fine but then stay away from white on top. In my experience fish spot that white and run like hell. It's like fishing around seals or Orca, no fish dinner that night. Spent many years as a commercial fisherman but I'm referring to sport fishing. Nothing better than a Salmon fillet over the coals of an open fire, red oak is great flavor, great flavor! My friends would supply fresh garden veggies and I'd supply the salmon. Just break out the guitar, play some blues and sing around the campfire; nothing better in my opinion.

As my Dad, who looked at painting like a Zen sort of thing, used to say (tweaking the biblical verse): “Paint hides a multitude of sins.”

In my experience, when building a boat, exactly the opposite is the case. Those glossy reflections show up every inconsistency in surface texture and hull shape that may be hard to detect prior to painting. I’ve spent many an hour fussing over the fairing, trying to convince myself it’s good enough, but failing, as I know once it’s painted it’s all too late. 😉
