I actually have this game from when I was a 8yr old ~_~ and after time and time again of sacrificing my comrades I discovered that this game's mechanics requires you to keep sam and the rest alive for plot related activities like with the kingsfoil if you talk to strider with sam he will remark that it's atlas minas(or something) weed and that it is poisonous thought out the game this happens that you have to talk with the character that is supposed to talk at the moment in the book it was a pain getting anywhere.

This is a really interesting concept for a game, but it seems that it was pretty poorly implemented and it feels rather low budget. It’s a shame, considering it has some impressive aspects, like the wide cast and the sheer amount of caves and areas to explore, but the game isn’t fun enough to justify them. On a side note, wow this was nostalgic. I remember watching this as a kid! And it still holds up.
I have always wished for a Lord of the Rings RPG that followed the action of the books completely, with players often switching characters and even scenes of action, while following the text verbatim as much as possible. Would be an amazing new take on “books on tape”-“books on video game”
I remember having this game on the SNES when I was a lot younger. I somehow got to the mines of Moria (never actually fought the Balrog though) without losing a party member. Only in retrospect do I realize how absolutely horrendously frustrating this game was.

Cool little tidbit about the Balrog I learned. The Balrogs are the corrupted servants of the Angels (otherwise known as the Valar) when Melkor (Lucifer/Satan/Beelzebub etc) defected from the Valar and took with him those who supported him, transforming them into creatures of darkness and fire, known nowadays as the infamous Balrog.
I'd like to point out that PBG almost handed over his entire channel to Puhbuhgu before he even had a name for him yet. Really dodged a bullet with that one.
Question: Who is the target audience for this game? Kids. Kids who are fans of Lord of the Rings. Now you'd think they'd have more Lord of the Rings characters in the game such as Saruman, Boromir, Gollum? Gollum wasn't just a character introduced in the 3rd book; Gollum was right there from the beginning, so there's no excuse not to have him. Instead, make way for characters with random obscure names, a bunch of crazy obscure tasks, mr. ghost man...and why don't you hear the Lord of the Rings theme song composed by Howard Shore anywhere in the game? What a piece of shit.
Phantasy Star II has some brutal dungeons like this too. It is almost inconceivable people were able to win games like this and that one without the internet back in the day.
PBG is a shining example of why I love gamers. He's funny, understands references to games which aren't necessarily the most well known or new creations, and is probably the most FREAKING ADORABLE thing you will ever see. It's like a puppy. With a hat. And video games.
The animated movie was actually not too bad. Had they finished it, it could have been a pretty good LotR movie series. It had a good amount of information that they couldn't afford to keep in the Jackson version.

I played this game. As a young child, it was quite troubling (I didn't know why) to have so much empty space, repetition, with nothing happening. It is boring, not fun. Now I understand they used a programming sequence to automatically generate the spaces and simply made a bad game. At the time, it was bewildering and probably caused mental illness.
I'm almost positive that the whole kingsfoil/athelas minor thing is a reference to the final book where aragorn is trying to heal some important characters because they were going to die (there was other stuff too but i dont remember it all). One of the nurses said something about kingsfoil being able to save them, but they had none. then something else happened and aragorn realized that kingsfoil was another name for athelas minor and that he still had some from earlier in the adventure when he needed to heal frodo's ringwraith wound. The thing i dont understand is why they mentioned it so early, because frodo didnt get stabbed (and therefore didnt need the kingsfoil) until a while after the company got to bree

Phantasy Star II has some brutal dungeons like this too. It is almost inconceivable people were able to win games like this and that one without the internet back in the day.

PBG is a shining example of why I love gamers. He's funny, understands references to games which aren't necessarily the most well known or new creations, and is probably the most FREAKING ADORABLE thing you will ever see. It's like a puppy. With a hat. And video games.

The animated movie was actually not too bad. Had they finished it, it could have been a pretty good LotR movie series. It had a good amount of information that they couldn't afford to keep in the Jackson version.

I love Bakshis LOTR, I really wish he got to do the last part of the story instead of Rankin Bass. I love Rankin Bass Hobbit film but Return of the King was so ehhh

Am I the only one who thinks that looks like a large and fun game? Seems like there is a lot to explore.
I played this game. As a young child, it was quite troubling (I didn't know why) to have so much empty space, repetition, with nothing happening. It is boring, not fun. Now I understand they used a programming sequence to automatically generate the spaces and simply made a bad game. At the time, it was bewildering and probably caused mental illness.

I'm almost positive that the whole kingsfoil/athelas minor thing is a reference to the final book where aragorn is trying to heal some important characters because they were going to die (there was other stuff too but i dont remember it all). One of the nurses said something about kingsfoil being able to save them, but they had none. then something else happened and aragorn realized that kingsfoil was another name for athelas minor and that he still had some from earlier in the adventure when he needed to heal frodo's ringwraith wound. The thing i dont understand is why they mentioned it so early, because frodo didnt get stabbed (and therefore didnt need the kingsfoil) until a while after the company got to bree

I think the Kingsfoil quest can be made easier by having Sam. He might know what it is.
Plus the two different names is totally a conversation in the book. So the game assumes the player read the book.
