Indigestion is also what Ncuti says in Rouge when the Tardis makes that noise, so I think particularly considering this story it's a very deliberate link.
I think Rose only panics when the doctor does. She has such confidence in him that sometimes she doesn't think things are dangerous when they are. Cause he'll always come through for her. And he really only gets irate when she's in danger. I love them
You won't know how timely this reaction is until you are literally caught up with the rest of us at this very moment, at which point you will have forgotten all about it and we will remind you. 😂
Scootys death has to be one of the most scary and could happen to a lot astronauts (minus the black hole) like being dragged out into space and with no oxygen just happening in a instant. Interestingly enough they filmed that part underwater
It's implied that the beast was in part hiding inside those marked vase pieces. And when the drill was deep enough, it tried to drive the crew and ood into a state of fear to manipulate them. It interfered with audio signals and eventually took possession of Toby. Toby unknowingly invited it in by turning around. And through Toby, the beast started to try to break the ood even further. The ood are telepatic, so by speaking to just one through telepathy, it could reach all of them. When it reached level 100, it basically screamed at them at such a high frequency that their brains went numb, making them easier to possess as well
Honestly i will always love this episode because the intense air of "Oh shit" was always crazy but this brought it to the level of "OH WE DEAD OH SHIT"
I found out recently that the Beast here is voiced by Gabriel Woolf, the same actor who played Sutekh, a very powereful villain from classic who, indeed apparently it was speculated back then that the Beast would turn out to be Sutekh.
This is probably my favorite of the many outstanding 2 parters from Doctor Who. It's such a great story and a perfect blend of horror, sci-fi, and adventure.
THANKS for this, Emme!!!! (The TARDIS is sick?!? Boy, did you time this posting right!!!! :) ) Yeah, you haven't seen an angry Ten yet, but you will one day real soon....You know when somebody gets so angry they get *quiet?* EMME: "I'm *not* afraid." ME: "You *will* be" :)
This is a great two parter. You’re completely correct the Ood are harmless. Gabriel Woolf has done the Beasts voice. He did the voice for another Dr who villain in 1975. Plus he’s done voice work in the new Disney Dr who and he’s 91 now. He’s got such a deeply upsetting voice.
I strongly recommend you edit or delete this comment to remove the SPOILER: Assuring her that the Ood are harmless ruins a big part of the suspense, both now and if/when they ever return.
Making this our first episode not set on or around a planet called Earth really helps to subliminally convey the awe, wonder and unadulterated danger they're in. Every other episode they're on Earth, orbiting Earth, on a ship with a time-window to Earth, or on 'new' Earth. It's home, it's familiar. It's potentially safe. Out on a small rock impossibly orbiting a black hole, anything can happen. The distance and isolation conveyed by this episode, right down to the altogether different instruments used for its score, is phenomenal. What an amazing way to take The Doctor away from Earth for the first time in this show.
Yeah the companions are very special to the Doctor, so ofc he gets angry if they're in danger, but that also goes for any other innocent life in danger as well.
18:10 There’s actually a cut scene at the start of the episode where the Ood asks if they would like some refreshment. Rose asks if they have any coffee. The Ood informs her that they have only Protein 1 (which tastes like milk) Protein 2 (which tastes like salt) and Protein 3 (which tastes like Sugar) So Rose asks for protein 1 with a dash of 3. (Essentially Milk with a bit of sugar) You actually see the Ood give her that drink when she first asks what they are.
FWIW, the Ood will reappear in a later episode (I mean apart from part 2 of this one), and the answer as to whether you're supposed to feel bad for them is unequivocally yes.
fun fact, the reason the milky way is round and spins around a center is actually cause we have a black hole in the middle of our galaxy, same with every spinning galaxy, so we are technically in orbit around a black hole
"What a cliff hanger" she says... remember we had to wait a week or more for each episode. Also... there is a truth to "most myth has its origin in truth" - people try to explain things and when we don't know a full truth we make up a story that encompasses "everything" we do know... so the idea that there is an "alien devil" out there is... possible.
I enjoy this 2 parter because the crew feel so real! Often the side characters in Who episodes are unmemorable but these guys feel like theyve been on an adventure before Ten and Rose met them, that we just havent seen! There is chemistry between them (as well as a bit of bitterness)
I will never understand how anyone can enjoy "suspense" like you do lol. This is exactly why I don't usually watch TV shows until after a whole season is available to stream, because I can't stand having to wait a week for a second part lol.
This two parter was actually the first Doctor Who story I saw in its entirety! Previously I had only seen bits of “The Shakespeare Code” and “The Unicorn and The Wasp” while channel hopping and had no context for them at the time
Your enthusiasm is super endearing easy to tell you are a definite genuine Dr Who reactor. I tell you this period of the show the years shortly after mid 2000's it had truly found its feet after the 2005 reboot and was just some of best episodes and tv of this type. Really miss this era cause it was such a great period of years for this.
Blackholes are quite terrifying, but there is something that makes them slightly less terrifying. A Blackhole can only suck in stuff if the mass of the Blackhole is different than the original object. For example, if the Sun was replaced by a Blackhole of 1 Solar Mass, the Solar System will continue as normal, just without any sunlight.
I love how much you seem to be enjoying Dr who and while I personally think David my favorite Dr I honestly can't wait to see you react to the future version of the doctor and all the crazy stories yet to come ... Especially this new season definitely seems to lean into the supernatural more
My first intro to the lovely MyAnna Buring, who played poor Scooti. She went on to star in the excellent 'Ripper Street' alongside Jerome Flynn from Game of Thrones. 😍
Remember the voice of the Beast. It is the harbinger of doom... and it will grant you the gift of its return. (This is one of my favourite stories, super looking forward to seeing your reactions)
This two-parter is so good overall. The Ood are innocent, but they are telepathic so are more susceptible to being possessed. The visual of Scooti drifting in space is so disturbing. Having just re-watched an old story from 1975, the contrast between what they could do with effects then and in the revived series is very striking.
Besides being so smart and intuitive about these Dr.Who episodes, you are still funny and joyful. These two episodes are top shelf and my favorites. Pretty terrifying 😮
She looked so familiar to me, but I looked up her IMDB, and I don't recognize anything. Maybe she looks like someone else? After doing some googling, I think she, Jennifer Saunders, and Sonya Walger all have a great resemblance to each other. They could be sisters!
Understand Rose expects the Doctor, AND Tardis, to keep her safe and get her out. She had a safety net, and escape strategy. No matter how bad it got she could always run away in the tardis... until it disappeared. This is also a great... slow burn or breadcrumbs story. You get a little glitch here and there that at first does not mean anything.... the "he is awake" which is both slightly meaningless and without context, but also unsettling. This is one of those episode you almost feel compelled to revisit/rewatch looking for hints but only after you know the answers...
“The Beast and his armies shall rise from the pit, and make war against God.” “S….sorry?” _knock knock_ “Apologies. I said: ‘I hope you enjoy your meal.’” Damn autocorrect. 😆
I always chuckle at the "impossibility" of this setup. In reality it's not impossible at all. Black holes are not magical vauum cleaners of teh universe. They have incredible mass and strong gravity, but if something is in orbit it will be just fine. Orbit just means in equilibrium between falling down and escaping velocity. The even said the planet is in orbit and thus stable. But then they said geosyncronous orbit, which is actually contradictory to what is shown. It's depicted as hovering stationary above the black hole. However geosynchronous means that is orbiting together with the surface of the black hole. As far as we know black holes are spinning and spinning unimaginably fast. So the planet should be whizzing around the BH at nearly the speed of light to maintain geosynchricity. The episode should have been called "The contradictory planet".
At 17:30, 'Sunshine ' is a term of endearment. The nearest US equivalent is 'my friend' but the UK version has a disdain of actually knowing who you're talking to. Typical usage - Policeman to ne'er-do-well 'Come along with me, Sunshine. You're nicked' It's like reading a person's Miranda Rights...

Fun fact: when these particular two-parter episodes first released, the date 06/06/06 passed in the week between them airing 👀
Gabriel Woolf (voice of the Beast) has one of the most calmly powerful and intimidating voices I've ever heard. He's made for roles like this.
“That thing’s demonic!” I applaud your choice of words
Current up to date Doctor Who fans watching the intro where the TARDIS is groaning and getting PTSD.
Indigestion is also what Ncuti says in Rouge when the Tardis makes that noise, so I think particularly considering this story it's a very deliberate link.
This is hands down one of my favourite stories, I really love when doctor who does horror
The Ood are one of my favourite Dr Who races
Mrs flOod :P (not a strong theory but a funny one)
Surely we can all agree We love a good ood don't we....
Oh... You're watching a Gabriel Woolf's story too...
I’m not sure I’ve got a job I’m doing at 91.
I won't go into why, but this is well timed.
