  • Fly along with a fully loaded ASW27 high performance sailplane as it flies the mountains just east of Provo, Utah. Pilot talks about some of the decisions of the flight and takes you in for a landing with a few surprises at the end. ;) Hope you enjoy. Bruno

While there are huge mountains that we fly right next to we can always glide to a farmer's field within a few miles of us. Thank goodness for healthy glide ratios while flying in the mountains! :) I visited your country a few years ago and fell in love. I loved the canals of Amsterdam. Beautiful place! Bruno

"Hope you enjoyed it" was your last comment before turning off the cam. I did - I hooted out loud I enjoyed it so much. On future recordings, one thing I would appreciate is a little more thinking out loud about the actual flying - what your are doing with the controls, the decisions you make along the way, how you find lift, etc. Anyway, great stuff, keep it up..

Hi Douglas. Thanks for watching. We stop soaring here in Utah around now but might do one of more wave flights if the weather is ok up through December. We don't start gliding again until April. I am happy to hear you want more videos. I have 3-4 flights I have video of that I will do something with over the winter to keep the videos coming. The next will probably be when I landed in a field in Hobbs this summer. Quite exciting! ;) Stay tuned. Bruno

Thanks, enjoyed every minute of it. It would be awesome if you did a complete flight (including pre-flight checks, etc) to give us a real feel for it. Also, when things slow down, give us a lesson on everything in the cockpit, thermals, the whole nine. In nebraska we can't do cool things like this, but I can do cool things through you. :)

  • @pe4153

    Ok. Several questions.
    1. water in the wings? you purposely put water in your wings, not for drinking?
    2. Now that you drink the water from the wings, where do you pee? Is there a hole at the bottom of the plane to let loose?
    3. Since you're so close to the mountains, what do you do if you fall lower than the mountains? Do you just crash?
I feel like these are all reasonable questions. You can't just put this awesome video and not expect this.

Bruno Vassel This is our club flying field, which is in a perfect location. It is on top a 700 ft hill, and since the winds come from the southwest most of the time, we can slope soar all day, or just thermal when the sun is out. goo.gl/maps/8v37KYUn4j42

I wish more often. The airport that I fly out of only has one or two other gliders that like to do longer cross country flights so I am often up there on my own. It is fun to call from 150 miles out and check in on the ones that are still within 10 miles of the airport. ;)

Not as big of a deal now that there are not any more jumpers (meat bombs) on the field. Don't take this pattern as normal - was pretty low and tight. :) Best of luck on your training and I hope to see you out there soon. Bruno

Back in the 1930s when the depression was full on, FDR created the Civilian Conservation Corps/CCC for young men who were jobless. It was almost like being in the military. They got monthly pay, most was sent back to their parents or wives and had plenty of food and for many better living conditions .
My dad was in the CCCs in Northern Michigan working out of the Grayling/Roscommon area.
