Deploying spoilers. When flying in close formation often the spoilers are the best way to help keep you from flying up into the guy slightly ahead of you and slightly higher than you. If you just pushed the nose down to miss him you would zoom in front of him. The spoilers help to keep you from raising up and zooming ahead. Thanks for watching. Bruno
Thanks so much for the kind words. Yes, in fact it does have airspeed too. :) So glad you enjoyed the video and I hope to keep improving on the shots and technique so they keep getting better. Take care, Bruno
This is one of your best videos: it is exciting & takes a huge amount of co-ordination & skill to match another pilot's track AND consistently keep them in frame (with or without comms.) Respect, from another pilot (with only 5000km cross country experience).....in hang gliders.
So glad you enjoyed it Douglas. Was really fun to make! :) Thailand is on my bucket list so I will keep you in mind. I bet it is quite an adventure living over there. Take care, Bruno
Thanks! I also like your soundtrack from the cockpit. Your narrations, radio chats, vario beeps, and minor wind noise make your videos much more interesting and real than the music soundtracks many soaring videos have. I look forward to your next video.
Phillip - you made my day!!! :) My favorite thing to hear is that my videos helped someone get into the sport. Great job following your dreams. Soaring is pretty amazing isn't it? Best of luck on your solo - I am sure you will do great. Please video it and let us know how it went. Safe flying and thanks for taking the time to write. Bruno

Hi Bruno, I got 35 years of soaring behind me and finally ended up with a DG400. Although having terminated soaring for a bit more then 10 years my blood starts boiling when watching videos like yours. Rüdiger
Fantastic!!! You will absolutely love your lessons. It takes a few times for everything to kick in with the brain and what is going on so don't get frustrated. I started flying gliders the summer of 1994 so it has been a few years. :) Fly safe and have a great time. Bruno
So glad you are enjoying the videos. Flying in the mountains is a higher risk/reward proposition but is well worth it. After a few hundred hours in the mountains you really start getting the feel of it and that is when you need to be careful and keep respect for the forces involved with mountain flying. The experience is well worth it though.
I hiked Mt Nebo last summer, and I'll never forget the views; but to see the same views from your perspective was fantastic. I remember sitting at the top, imagining flying around it. Thanks for posting this.
Man, Bruno! This is nothing short of magic to me...a non-glider pilot (for now). Absolutely beautiful. Sure hope to try it soon. My wife promised me a glider ride for my birthday in Sep.
Hi Bruno, I've been enjoying your videos for a while now. Finally got myself into a glider earlier this year and am now just an outlanding check away from my C certificate. Unfortunately winter has set in and thats about it for the season. I posted a video response of my conversion to a single seater but not quite sure how that all works yet so apologies if it has turned up somewhere without explanation. Keep your videos coming and I will continue to live vicariously through them.
Hi Josh - Yes, they are monster winglet prototypes for the ASG29. If you look at some of my other videos I had a pair for my ASW20 and they were amazing. Look up John Neel or York Zentner in Utah. Also take a look at my video of the Lancer 4P with their winglets. They are amazing. Bruno
LOL! My heart gets pumping even thinking about the idea of flying at redline right next to the mountain in turbulence. My head would go through the canopy after the first bump! :) I might be willing to try at 200km/h if I have water in the wings. Thanks for watching. Bruno
Thanks Bruno, I will look them up! They look awesome, and from your side by side ASW27 with your old ASW20 video, it appears they work awesome too! Josh
Wow! What fun! That's what soaring is about! Playing a bit of chase and follow the leader, above the most beautiful scenery. Can't do the same under power... Thanks, again, B4!
Hi Ferd - I love Belleka's videos. He is quite the pilot and story teller! I am sorry to say he just did a write up about doing another one of these cliff flights and unfortunately then ditching the glider in the ocean. Luckily he is ok but the glider is gone. Running the cliffs looked amazing but as we now see does carry risks. Just glad he is ok. Bruno
Wait till you actually get up in the air yourself. You will be blown away at how beautiful it is in real life. See if she will move it up to a father's day gift! You really don't want to wait till September. ;) Thanks for watching. Bruno
Thanks for the kind words. Not much. I absolutely love working on and making small improvements to my gliders so it isn't work at all to me. When I look at any glider I think of it as a piece of art and beauty so it is easy to take the time to take care of them. Bruno
:) Thanks Davis. They are great fun to make! Do you fly gliders? I am in Vegas all the time and love to chat with other pilots. Thanks for watching. Bruno
Awesome video and flying. I fly RC powered gliders and enjoy it very much. Flew in a two seat glider many years and many lbs ago. Don't think I could squeeze into one now. Great job.
Tell me about it. For 50+ flights my instructors keep telling me "keep the damn string straight!". It's almost as good as it should be but they let me start flying solo anyways. I find using Condor gliding simulator in the off season helped me with the problem.
Hi Bruno. some years ago i got interested in gliding. but i was not old enough to fly. then earlier this week i stumbled across 1 of your videos and saw it. then saw another. and before i knew it. i subscribed. then i thought to myself "wait a minute. i'm old enough now" so now i'm going to do my first lesson tomorrow and i will record the flight with my own GoPro. and it will hopefully be uploaded in 1-2 days from time of post
Another great video! I never got a chance to soar with other over such great terrain before I had to give up soaring for medical reasons. I truly miss the flying. If you ever get to Thailand I'll buy you dinner and a beer.
Okay that butterfly is bad ass. I didn't know it has a traffic warning too. Wow. Landing gear warning, taking of with speed brake warning, what's next? Ground proximity warning system lol? Does it show airspeed too? cause then it could just replace everything lol. Great flying as always sir. Your videos are the most amazing soaring videos on the tube no contest. I miss flying gliders but when I see your videos it takes me back all the way, and for that I will always thank you! Take care sir!
hi Bruno. I love your videos. I´m a student pilot and looking forward to get my license this summer. Had my first taste of flying in the mountains last year in the Czech Republic. Awesome. Greetings from Germany
Love to watch video like that. Have not been up in many years, this one really gets me going. Living sounth of Denver CO. I need to go up to the glider field in Loveland/Boulder and get up and see if this will get me going. Thanks for the video.
Bob you have to give it a try next Spring! I have a lot of friends that fly out of Boulder and it is a great site. You owe it to yourself to give it a try because it is even better in person than any video can show. Best of luck and keep us updated on how the flight went. Bruno
I will do that, I already fly RC scale and competition F3A and have a 50cc tug. I will get over their in the spring. Is their any simulators for PC you would recommend for soaring? Thanks.
Bob Thomas There is an amazing simulator that is VERY realistic and is way fun since you can fly against other people live online. It is very popular around the world it is called Condor. Just do a google search for it and it is well worth the investment! See you in the Spring.
the traffic warning is a seperate instrument called a power flarm, the "ground proximity warning" is most likely the alarm warning the pilot that he has pulled air brakes with out lowering the gear to prevent a wheel up landing.
Jevon, Congrats!!!! You will love your 20 for many years to come. Your wife sounds awesome. :) New Zealand is on my bucket list to visit one of our winters and if you do ever make it to Utah please look me up and we can compare notes over some food. Bruno
I am actually adjusting both. With flying so close formation I keep my hand on the air brakes to help me from getting too close to the other aircraft. Normally I never use the airbrakes outside of the last 30 seconds of landing. Great question and best of luck with your solo. Exciting!!! :) Bruno
Hi Lars, Thanks for watching. I was flying within 5o feet of another glider in formation. We were 2 seconds away from collision at any time. Most of the time you don't fly so close to others so you don't get such an annoying warning. I am absolutely loving the flarm. The warnings are great but even better it tells you the climb rates of everyone around you within 5 miles! What a great tool. Take care, Bruno
Another beautiful video! I have to tell you that, inspired by your videos, I took up gliding (already have my PPL) and have now bought a very small camcorder to film some of my own flights. I'm due to go solo in two Sunday's time, weather permitting (not something you need to worry too much about :) and hope to film it. I'll let you know when I post it online. Bruno, thank you for such wonderful videos! And please, keep 'em coming!
Hi Christian - the club in Utah is called Utah Soaring Association. They have 4 Grob two place gliders available for club members. Come on out and play with us. The mountains are even better in real life up close...but not too close. ;) Bruno
Not sure how I stumbled onto your video, but I'm glad that I did. Man that looks like a blast!!! Beings I know absolutely nothing about flying, perhaps you wouldn't mind taking a moment to answer a couple of questions, so that I will have at least a little knowledge in what you're doing. 1. How long can you stay up for? 2. Why do you have an oxygen tube? 3. What happens if you ... fall ... is there an engine of some such to fall back on? Thanks in advance for your time and for posting this video. It was very entertaining to watch!!
Hi Steve - all good questions. My longest flight was over 8.5 hours in the air. We fly up to 18,000 ft so we need oxygen up that high. This glider can glide 48 miles in any direction when I am one mile high. If I can't find lift, I can glide to an airport or even a farmer's field. These gliders are made to land out in fields. The wings come off and you can get a trailer to take the parts back to the airport to start again. Keep watching more gliding videos and then try for yourself!
Bruno Vassel Bruno - Thanks for taking your time to answer my questions. I truly appreciate you! I can only imagine the true sense of freedom one must experience while gliding in the air like that. It most likely a feeling that cannot be duplicated unless you're actually doing it!! However, as awesome as it looks, I'll most likely continue watching you guys from the comfort of my desk chair ... here on flat, solid ground. (haha) But thanks again, Bruno and stay free, my brother!! - Steve
Bruno Vassel Do you ever have to use the bathroom when you're gliding for that long? I suppose you can't just land for a quick pee and get back in the air? Another question... Do most people own their gliders? Where are they stored, etc?
Shane Fiek Shane, you wear a condom catheter so you can go to the bathroom any time you want. My longest flight has been 8.5 hours so you need a solution. A lot of people own their own gliders but there are also clubs in some places where you can join and then share gliders. Not sure where you live but there might be a club near you.
Now that is the right question!!! :) Do a search for Soaring Society of America and they will have resources on the site to help you to find out more. Visit a local gliding operation (which can be found on the SSA website) and go check it out one weekend. You will have a blast! Bruno
Hi Bruno, congrats to just another great video. I'm totally adicted to soaring since I started 2008 - aged 42 - kind of a late bloomer, just sad about every flight, I missed the first 42 years ;) I'm a bit wondering, why the Flarm in your video reported continously traffic - usually our Flarms report any new registered traffic participants once, if they appear in your neighborhood, and that's it? Only in case of predicted collision, this life savers become annoying like a dentist drill. Lars
Really bad cold. Plug to stop the leaks... ;) We fly so high in gliders that we need supplemental oxygen. Oxygen hose. No I am not a grandpa with emphysema... :) Bruno
I have my private rotorcraft license (schweizer 300), but unfortunately because Im living in Vegas as a 26 year old, bartending full time and owning a liquor company I haven't been able to fly in the lats two years. I would love to get back into it but i just don't have a whole lot of time. But I love your videos, been into flying and cars (mainly Ferraris) my whole life.
h31212 its totally possible though, a buddy of mine rigged two paintball guns to an RC helicopter and lol it was funny. Lets just say it worked really well.. But I don't know if I'd recommend it on gliders because someone could probably actually wind up getting killed if the paintball got lodged in the wing or something. Bad idea lol
The only problem would be if the paint made the glider heavier and reduced its performance. Although if you could attach motors to the "glider" then I think it would be great.
We combat radio-controlled flying wing gliders and your chases feel much like ours though your view is much better and targeting more accurate. We always walk away though so you give a little and get a little I guess. I'd love to try this too. I'd just have to unlearn my instinct to hit the other planes!
Hi there Bruno. I love your videos! Since I'll probably start soaring this summer, or next summer, I watch a lot of your videos, because they are just very good. I have a question: You get ridge lift from air/lift being pushed up by the mountain, but on the other side of the mountain, the air sinks like a stone and it's dangerous to fly (or actually fall :p) on that side of the mountain. Do you know on which side you can find the lift, or do you just carefully try? Alan
Awesome man. Looks like a lot of fun! Question though, is that supplementary O2 in your nose? I would assume because the cockpit isn't pressurized right? And what does the handle above what I am assuming the speed brake do?
Great video! I always look forward to your videos. I fly gliders in Illinois, but there are no mountains obviously, so I hope to make it out to Utah one of these days. What is the name of your club?
Thanks for posting the video, Bruno. I really look forward to them. What is the wrist watch you are wearing in this video? I can't quite make it out. :)
Great Video Bruno!!! The monster winglets on your buddies glider, are they after market or is it the camera angle? If they are after market, who makes them? Thanks for the great video's!! Josh
Bruno, I love your videos and have always wanted to soar but the expense is pretty intimidating. How many hours of flying experience does it take before one can soar like this in your Utah videos? Given that one would have a sailplane like yours.
I really enjoy all your videos. I never heard a collision avoidance announcer before, but think I'd enjoy using my license more if I had it. Is it as handy as it seems?
Bruno, how many years have you been flying sailplanes? BTW, I signed up to begin glider lessons later this month, and I credit your videos for part of my interest. I love your videos and watch them multiple times.
Bruno, Man I wished I had the resources to do this. This has always been my dream to fly. Ever since I was a kid trying to fly off the garage carport roof out back with make shift arm wings, parachute like inventions and sometimes just jumping! No wonder my knees are shot, lol. I really appreciate the videos. Just wish I could do this too. Btw, I fly Radio Control planes and own a RC foam composition Ventus Glider currently in build status. My buddy and I fly/build foamies for kicks. So we like to maneuver our planes like you too, only in a much smaller scale. Off the topic, but how many gallons of ballast do you carry? THANKS for sharing!!! Daniel
Daniel. Very nice to meet you and I am thrilled to hear you are enjoying my videos. They are a blast to make. :) That is cool to hear you are building a Ventus. I have several friends that fly them and they love them. I have lots of time in the air right next to one. You need to take the effort and at least go for a ride in a glider once so that you will even more appreciate and enjoy your glider RC activities! As for ballast I carry 37 gallons in the wings and another gallon in the tail for weight and balance. The glider feels like a completely different ship with that extra weight but in a good way. Thanks for reaching out. Bruno
Hey Bruno, That is my next thing. Going in a glider. Is Utah a good thermal area. Or is it you just happen to live there? Looks like a lot of wide open to take advantage of versus my state of California .Of course I have not seen it from a gliders viewpoint so I guess I really don't know, lol. Thanks Again, Daniel
Another great video, Bruno. After watching this, I just downloaded the ASW20 from the Wolfgang Piper Glider website, and I'm going to try it out in Flight Simulator X. One of my favourite gliders in my collection is the LS8-18, I just love the panel. What airport do you usually takeoff from in Utah, so I can try some gliding there?
Agreed, me too, 5000km xc 1000 hours + in HG's
Bruno
Hi Bruno,
I got 35 years of soaring behind me and finally ended up with a DG400. Although having terminated soaring for a bit more then 10 years my blood starts boiling when watching videos like yours.
Rüdiger
A small minded individual I see.
8stral I think you did not understand what I wrote.
R.
8stral You drastically misunderstood his comment.
Then start soaring again! People have always wanted to fly, it's in their blood!
***** No, means I am getting again enthusiastic!
Fabulous! Your videos have inspired me tremendously Bruno; none better in my humble opinion!
Man, Bruno! This is nothing short of magic to me...a non-glider pilot (for now). Absolutely beautiful. Sure hope to try it soon. My wife promised me a glider ride for my birthday in Sep.
Fab video you took there. Expensive toys! But I loved being able to see the view from your shoulder!
Bruno, I Love Your Videos & Your Staying With Live Audio Only! Best Realism, Aside From Being There!

Congrats on starting to fly and best of luck getting your license. Fly safe, Bruno
Thanks Derek. You guys have enough good stuff over there that we just try to keep up with you. :) Bruno
Bruno
Gaggle flying!! LOVE IT!! You guys are the luckiest guys in the world!
Wait till you actually get up in the air yourself. You will be blown away at how beautiful it is in real life. See if she will move it up to a father's day gift! You really don't want to wait till September. ;) Thanks for watching. Bruno
Awesome video. I get to go up for my first time this month. I could watch these vids all day. Great flight.

I really enjoy your videos while taking breaks from my GPL training here in Finland.
This looks super fun. Getting my glider rating is on my short list of aviation pursuits...nice video!
Great video! I enjoyed the cockpit perspective. Gliding is such a thrill.
That yaw string almost never strays...I just started gliding and its difficult!
Tell me about it. For 50+ flights my instructors keep telling me "keep the damn string straight!". It's almost as good as it should be but they let me start flying solo anyways. I find using Condor gliding simulator in the off season helped me with the problem.

So am I!! Started a gliding course in April and now I am more than half-way to solo status. Loved every bit of it.

Great vid bruno, Fantastic scenery we have nothing like this in the uk.
Hi Bruno!
Great Video again! Hope to load up some stuff too, once I am home. Had a good week in the alps.
Cheers Ferd

Been there, nice hike
Can't wait to see what you come up with Ferd. :) Bruno

Absolutely breathtaking...............
What a great video Bruno.
If you're ever in Vegas I want to buy you a beer!! Your videos are so entertaining to watch!!
To go from Nebo to Alpine in gliders, that's pretty awesome. I've been in the Wasatch all my life but never seen it this way.
Yep, Matt is correct. Was the gear warning since I was pulling the spoilers out without having the gear down.
small world, Just bought an ASW20BL into NZ, bruno was a huge influence.
thanks for the ride! That was awesome :)

Hi Bruno,
congrats to just another great video. I'm totally adicted to soaring since I started 2008 - aged 42 - kind of a late bloomer, just sad about every flight, I missed the first 42 years ;)
I'm a bit wondering, why the Flarm in your video reported continously traffic - usually our Flarms report any new registered traffic participants once, if they appear in your neighborhood, and that's it? Only in case of predicted collision, this life savers become annoying like a dentist drill.

Really bad cold. Plug to stop the leaks... ;) We fly so high in gliders that we need supplemental oxygen. Oxygen hose. No I am not a grandpa with emphysema... :) Bruno
Nope- Utah lake which is 30 miles south of the Great Salt Lake. Bruno
dude this is beyond awesome!!
He is so good he doesn't need to thermal!
this is real flying!
As I watch, I see that you bump the stick just like we RC guys do.
Oh my...! That must have been a terrible experience!
I'll contact him!
Cheers
Ferd
Truly amazing please do more videos
You got R2D2 sitting in the back? I'm sure I can hear him :)
that would be fun if you could hook up paintball guns to the outside and have a turret to shoot your buddy with
My thought exactly lol.
h31212 its totally possible though, a buddy of mine rigged two paintball guns to an RC helicopter and lol it was funny. Lets just say it worked really well.. But I don't know if I'd recommend it on gliders because someone could probably actually wind up getting killed if the paintball got lodged in the wing or something. Bad idea lol
CHICKEN SALAD Nothing a homemade ejection seat cant prevent.
Well glider pilots do always wear parachutes
The only problem would be if the paint made the glider heavier and reduced its performance. Although if you could attach motors to the "glider" then I think it would be great.
Really enjoyed your vid Wow! Thanks
Alan
That scream, when you pulled your stick: Yeeehaaawww!!
Awesome man. Looks like a lot of fun!
Question though, is that supplementary O2 in your nose? I would assume because the cockpit isn't pressurized right? And what does the handle above what I am assuming the speed brake do?
Great video ! :)
Very nice sir
Great video! I always look forward to your videos. I fly gliders in Illinois, but there are no mountains obviously, so I hope to make it out to Utah one of these days. What is the name of your club?
I love to see your video's! I always asked myself how much maintainance you have to do (on this glider) to keep it as nice as it seems to be?
Thanks for posting the video, Bruno. I really look forward to them. What is the wrist watch you are wearing in this video? I can't quite make it out. :)
Great Video Bruno!!! The monster winglets on your buddies glider, are they after market or is it the camera angle? If they are after market, who makes them?
Thanks for the great video's!!
Josh
Bruno, I love your videos and have always wanted to soar but the expense is pretty intimidating. How many hours of flying experience does it take before one can soar like this in your Utah videos? Given that one would have a sailplane like yours.
Hi Bruno!
Look for "LOKF 2013 soaring in carinthia"
Cheers

I really enjoy all your videos. I never heard a collision avoidance announcer before, but think I'd enjoy using my license more if I had it. Is it as handy as it seems?
"Let's go to Timp". One of these days, one of these days. :-)
Bruno, how many years have you been flying sailplanes? BTW, I signed up to begin glider lessons later this month, and I credit your videos for part of my interest. I love your videos and watch them multiple times.
That looks fun as hell
Hi Bruno!
I finally succeded in loading up a hero 3 video.
Look for LOKF 2013.
Wow you were really close to those mountains I would of been shitting bricks lol
Dude you have TCAS in a glider???
That glider looks well equipped.
Bruno,
Man I wished I had the resources to do this.
Bruno
Hey Bruno,
That is my next thing. Going in a glider.
Is Utah a good thermal area. Or is it you just happen to live there? Looks like a lot of wide open to take advantage of versus my state of California .Of course I have not seen it from a gliders viewpoint so I guess I really don't know, lol.
Thanks Again,
Daniel
Echo Three to Echo Seven. Han, old buddy, do you read me?
Another great video, Bruno. After watching this, I just downloaded the ASW20 from the Wolfgang Piper Glider website, and I'm going to try it out in Flight Simulator X. One of my favourite gliders in my collection is the LS8-18, I just love the panel.
What airport do you usually takeoff from in Utah, so I can try some gliding there?
nice video
