Can't get enough of this stretch of 95! It's easily in my top 5 favorite urban freeways. U2 was a very nice touch as well. I didn't see that coming from you. :-)
Ah, my hometown! Great video, Jim! I-95 was supposed go through DC but NIMBY opposition killed that, so it was realigned in 1977 along the eastern half of the Beltway. Neither the Beltway nor the original Springfield interchange, a dinky cloverleaf, were designed for long-haul traffic, so it had to be rebuilt. The Wilson Bridge had to be rebuilt, too, and they just finished that 4 years ago. The new bridge is a work of art. Check that out in a future video, perhaps.
I remember the ramp from I-95 northbound to the inner loop of the Beltway was a cloverleaf ramp which dumped you on the left lane of the beltway which required weaving from lane to lane
95 north in northern VA is always a parking lot at times those HOV lanes helps a great deal until you get down to Dumfries Va. That springfield interchange is awesome
That is because it has been redone (Springfield Interchange Project) - one of THREE major projects along this route. The other two are the 495 Express Lanes and the Wilson Bridge Project - to the left and right of the Springfield Interchange Project, respectively.
This drive brought back memories, your where on the same route I would take headed to NY. (I-95) all the way along with the multiple interchanges that are attached. (GVJ), Great Video Jim!!!
When I lived in Atlanta, I always complained about 285 and that section of 85 in Gwinnett County plus 75 in Henry County, BUT 95 in Northern Virginia is the 9th Circle of Hell, especially on a holiday weekend! And this is coming from someone who used to live off the 405 in LA!
Exit 163 is where the AMTRAK Auto Train Lorton Terminal which is Northern Terminus for the AMTRAK Auto Train which is a 865 mile nonstop train route connecting Lorton, VA (Washington, DC area) with Sanford, FL (Orlando Area) as this is the train where your car goes along with you is located.
I-495 is posted as North when it runs concurrent with I-95, it actually runs east-west at the Springfield Interchange. But in the next video coming you'll notice that coming to the Springfield Interchange from Tysons Corner I-495 is posted as south, go figure?
3:30 That's what HOV Lanes are for! I tried that once in Hartford. 4:22 Wait, I'm confused. First, I see "495 East," but then I see "495 NORTH?" Impressive video! I can't wait to see what it's like to drive I-395 through the tunnels in DC!
Enjoyed it Jim, are we going to see more of the Springfield interchange in the future? I feel like I'm on this 3 day road trip with you with the sequence of the videos!
Oh sure, I'll just hop in my car and go 2,500 miles, film it and come back to Atlanta, lol. Seriously, I have never been out west but I hope to get out there some day.
What was VA secondary 3000 is now VA 278 - it is still called the Fairfax County Parkway/James Herrity Parkway; it is limited-access from I-95 to VA 7 in Reston. I hope you get to drive it in a future trip, as it IS worth it.(I had my doubts until getting to take it in the eastern direction - from US 50 to I-95; it makes for a less-painful alternative to the Beltway between the same two roads.)
I HATE this stretch of roadway with a passion. Occasionally, I will travel from Raleigh to Pennsylvania to see family. I have NEVER had a clean trip without slowdowns somewhere around Richmond, Washington, and/or Baltimore.
Because it wasn't always; I-95 had a break in the vicinity of the Airport and through Philadelphia proper. It STILL has one in New Jersey in greater Trenton. The Airport break I remember, as it included the Airport proper and ran north to both the Walt Whitman and Ben Franklin Bridges. Both that and the Blue Route (I-476 from Chester to King of Prussia) had massive community opposition.

Thanks, I enjoy this road a lot too...when it's moving. I'm just full of musical surprises :)
This drive brought back memories, your where on the same route I would take headed to NY. (I-95) all the way along with the multiple interchanges that are attached. (GVJ), Great Video Jim!!!
I miss this drive!!! I miss Nova!
You know what Jim - the building tension of the music coupled with the tension of the traffic building worked very well.
That was a very enjoyable video. I loved watching it.
Thank you!
I use to go see my cousin in I-95

Thanks, the Springfield Interchange is great, maybe top 3 in the country.
YES!! @4:37 is the "mixing bowl" Totally love it!

Nice video here Jim! Looks like a neat interchange! Yikes about the traffic in the southbound lanes.
Love the way you ended the video Jim! Thanks for the ride!
2:40 Surprisingly they used New York City as a control city from Virginia!
Yes, even north of Baltimore it is signed for NY City.

Thank you, glad you liked it!
Nice pairing of music and highway, Jim...
Gettin it done, Freewayjim style!! I love it, esp the Springfield interchange part.
3:30 That's what HOV Lanes are for! I tried that once in Hartford.

It should be inner or Outer loop to avoid confusion on the beltway

Pretty much go through I-95 North in VA all the time
Thanks, I touch on those points in the next video (I-395 North) and we crossed and filmed the bridge as well during the trip.
Oh sure, I'll just hop in my car and go 2,500 miles, film it and come back to Atlanta, lol. Seriously, I have never been out west but I hope to get out there some day.
Yes you'll see more in the next video, but I did not do a tour, hopefully I'll get to someday because it is worth it!

Thank you, I had fun with this one.!
Sorry, that's a music company copyright deal, I have no control over it.
Thank you!
Thanks and good luck!
Interesting how VDOT signed 95 North for Baltimore and NYC. What about Philadelphia?
I-195 connects I-95 with BWI Airport at Exit 47 near Baltimore :)
Yes, I filmed quite a bit in Baltimore on the way up and way back.
Thanks and yes, pretty much!
Thanks!
Thanks for noticing, that was a nice by-product of the song.
When you the video ended the music at the express lanes *I Felt that*
Thanks for watching!
Ah, I get it. That makes sense, since this I-495 is one of the few highways in the United States that go in circles.
Hey Freewayjim are you going to do Baltimore too?
I HATE this stretch of roadway with a passion. Occasionally, I will travel from Raleigh to Pennsylvania to see family. I have NEVER had a clean trip without slowdowns somewhere around Richmond, Washington, and/or Baltimore.
Thanks! there is a long, logical explanation for all that :)
I love the sign that says 95-Baltimore, New York City"...they seem to have left out Philadelphia, which 95 serves prominently!
And it wasn't even filmed on a Friday, which is when SB I-95 traffic is allegedly at its worst.
thank you
No wonder I95 traffic through Virginia is horrible on holiday weekends!
Thanks, I-395 in to DC is next up.
My morning commute begins at 3:52 and ends at the Pentagon Military Reservation in Arlington.
Great job!
Are you planning on doing any MS videos?
Not anytime soon and there really isnt much worth filming there IMO.
No, it's a law but not everyone follows it.
Nice video - enjoyed it. Would have enjoyed the PSB's version of 'Streets' better :-)
1:34 My hometown!
i traveled here
More annoying than that is the failure of most drivers to use the left lane only for passing here.
Awesome section of highway, though it could do without drivers like the guy in the Kia around 3:05
What's wrong with seeing some mobile it will be great if I could watch it on a IPad
I live hear😭
This road is terrible to drive traffic wise as it is usually congested at any time of the day.
I did this trip in my car, better gas mileage :)
LOL!
U2
I meant south.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Thanks!
Thanks!
