CHS (Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome) symptoms and coping summary

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 18 ส.ค. 2024
  • This is mostly just a quick video discussing my personal symptoms and experience so far with being diagnosed with CHS due to heavy use of marijuana for so many consecutive years and in such high concentrations. If you are feeling scared or depressed, I promise you’re not alone. If you need someone to talk to or relate to, I’m always open to a message and I will respond to each and every single person who has concern. We need to spread awareness and come together as a community of CHS sufferers to start making a change toward a normal lifestyle. It’s going to be a challenge, probably unlike anything you’ve ever had to fight, but you will make it through if you stay optimistic and motivated. I hope this is helpful for at least some of you. If you want to see the full hour long video of me discussing my whole story and experience I will add the link here:
Good luck and much love to everyone.

Been dealing with these symptoms for a few years now... ER visits, colonoscopies, endoscopies all negative. Was diagnosed with CHS about a year ago... Finally ready to swallow the hard truth that its the cannabis... feeling very upset about having to stop smoking... it's one of my favorite things on earth. Day 1 here of no weed for me.. definetly ready to not be sick anymore. Gonna miss my bud tho....

40 ER visits, 36 years of this crap, I still don't want to quit on weed, I feel your pain. I went a day without and fortunately it has already helped I think. Hey man, as a doctor I really appreciate you putting out this video. Spread the word. Weed isn't a miracle drug, and its not some horrible evil addiction. It IS a drug and unfortunately drugs effect everyone differently. Just like alcohol can be fine for some people and really bad for others, so can weed. Ask your doctor for help, there is a lot of safe things even non-drug options, we can offer to help anxiety, depression, and other things you normally get from pot.

Well to be honest i agree with what your saying but at the end of the day your most likely gonna prescribe people with pills that according to you make things better but like you said, drugs have side effects, you as a doctor should know that those pills your prescribing are drugs, regardless of what its for, dosage or chemicals it has, their drugs, weed isnt weed is a plant, its a hallucinogen its natural all though it has chemicals their not man made, drugs on the other hand are man made substances get your facts straight, the only real way to help anxiety and depression is to put goals in your life, put your focus in something else, the point is to give yourself something to live for, im coming from experience, put aside your papers and your lil “ im a doctor” and actually put your life experience infront of you, if you never went through it keep it out your mouth unless you got real advice

This guy knows what he's talking about.
I'm not a medical professional either, but I've experienced two severe episodes of CHS (diagnosed at the hospital) and every word this man said is spot on.
It's rare, but CHS is real. I've seen people suffer that are too stubborn or unwilling to accept that marijuana is the cause of their sickness.
Do your own research, and admit your usage to a medical professional. Be healthy.

Having looked at your channel that's a pretty big step. Well done though mate, kinda takes the fun out of it when you're puking and feeling like shit. I've suffered it for years now, on and off, and it seems to be getting more frequent. Only in the last few weeks have I discovered what's been causing my 'random sicknesses' and finding that out feels quite life changing and a very positive thing, like I'm now in control. I've stopped totally now and sparking up doesn't appeal to me. Just not worth it now imo. I had a blast and it's been a big part of my life but nah. Looking forward to never experiencing CHS again. Now that'll be something!
You gonna go back? or stay off for good? I see a lot of people trying to creep back into using it after experiencing CHS but I think if you've had it it'll always be lurking there and could strike any time and I don't wanna live like that. Anyway whatever you decide best of luck.

I’ve been smoking damn near every single day for the last 2 years. I understand that this isn’t a lot of time compared to some people, but the positive effects marijuana has had on my overall state of mind and creativeness were second to none. I smoked marijuana to help with my anger issues, and it also made me more creative musically. I was diagnosed with CHS 5 days ago, and since then I have not smoked. I can admit to feeling physically better, but mentally I’m fucked. Can’t really enjoy myself how I was able to while medicated, my musical creativeness is starting to fade, and honestly I’m feeling very depressed. This sounds crazy but I’m literally on the verge of tears right now, because i hate who I am when I’m not high. Much love to anyone going through what I’m going through right now, you’re not alone.

Took me two weeks to admit it was CHS because I'm so horrified to quit and scared of family and friends getting mad at me for smoking, only told my mother so far. They gave me the IV drip and gravol (which im not supposed to take due to addiction but doing good with it). I’ve smoked for over 10 years everyday. Breakfast lunch and dinner. And recently within the last year I’ve had these problems I’m now on day 5 of not smoking and have never felt better. It’s unfortunate that something I’ve stuck with for so long and something I’ve used to escape from this harsh reality is now something that attacks me from the inside causing violent puking extreme abdominal pain and headaches that feel like I have a tumor. I had a long good run with Mary Jane but if anyone has hear problems too the only way to fix it is to give up on her. I wish everyone that has this new problem the best of luck.

Excellent video, Just saw this. I am a GI RN in Vegas , I’m gonna encourage some of the Docs to pass this on to their patients when needed (they won’t). These patients show up in the GI lab after multiple ER visits, just like you said.
The GI Doc’s just want to, do the case (upper endoscopy which is of course negative or normal) ring the register, and make the money.
My experience is most if not all the Docs I know have little to no compassion for what’s actually happening , they speak freely once the patients asleep & to them it’s just another pot head .
So like you said , you can save yourself a lot of trouble and arrive at the diagnosis much sooner by being honest about frequency and quantity. The ER doc will tell you much sooner and save you all of these unnecessary tests.
I have heard about the hot showers as a red flag in the diagnosis. I think this video would be exponentially more useful for a patient to hear it from someone in the trenches, then to have an MD wagging his finger in your face telling you to stop ingesting.
It’s very hard for people to except this diagnosis and the Docs don’t care. It’s the last thing they want to hear or believe
Seeing this video could greatly expedite what ultimately has to happen , which is I guess quitting? Or cutting down to just occasional use, which if you use 24/7 is gonna be really tough. Cold turkey is probably best.
From now on , after the Doc leaves I’ll be sure to share this with them, I’m sure it will be helpful. Thx for being so honest.

So very true man. I was stuck in this incredible rut for over 14 years. I got so upset at the hospitals and drs for (in my eyes) keeping me in this. It’s like they were just trying to put a bandaid on a gunshot wound.
I see now, Dilaudid(the powerful stuff more than morphine), and Xanax are just temporary fixes for such a (again in my eyes) overwhelming problem. In fact those two drugs I just talked about are amongst the worse for you to take up to try to “cure” this.
The only true way for this Syndrome is to stop smoking. This is why they label it as a syndrome. Syndromes means there’s no known cure.
When in fact, we now know the problems, some triggers, red flags, and ultimately the SOLUTION! Quit smoking!
I’ve had this for over 14 years. I’ve had multiple surgeries, every scope and test you could think of, and even saw specialists(among the best in the country) for this.
I’ve nearly lost everything and everyone in my life. No joke. My friends, family. My coworkers. My job. My love. My existence, essentially was prepping for death. I wanted to die, I didn’t care anymore.
There is hope out there guys. You just need to believe! We can do this. Catch it before it really becomes a problem.
      Thanks for posting this video.

In total 3 Hospital visits, and finally figuring out what’s been wrong with me/others have it TOO has been such a reliving thing. I’ve now found myself embarrassed to tell people why I stopped smoking cause WEED is “fun” and it “does no harm” but of course it decided to fuck ME UP. Especially cause a lot of my friends smoke as well, it’s tough bein the guy who always has a joint to now he can’t even have one puff. BUT.....I wouldnt wish the pain/uncomfortableness that CHS brings on anyone. If smoking weed is the way to stop it, so be it. If I quit now and feel better, would I be able to smoke in a few months or at least years later? Would I experience the same symptoms as soon as I start smoking again?

you were lucky bro, here in Colombia (the third world) I also experienced these very painful symptoms but here they don't know shit, they only thing they did to calm my nausea was to put a tube from my nose to my stomach it was so painful and bloody, I had several visits to the ER, colonoscopys, and a lot of uncomfortable exams, I lost 20 pounds in over a year, and it was until last week my DAD looked up for this syndrome and it is what i Have, thanks for the info and these experiences must be shared so people dont suffer without knowing what is trully wrong with them, in all of my past episodes I used weed thinking it would help me but I was making more damage to myself, it also to be noticed that up to this day there have been 22 fatal cases due to the dehydration and heart failure

I had all the exact same experience, from the ER, the disbelief of it being weed, the ativan and the IV's and waking up feeling sick and having hot showers. It's brutal, I had the exact same experience and I started smoking again, now I'm going through CHS again lol gotta stop smoking.
I smoked for 7 years and had been sick like, hundreds of times before I even found out what it was.
I would smoke when I was sick because I thought it helped lol but in the end it just made it worse.
I stopped smoking in October and didn't smoke for like 30 or 40 days and then started smoking again, and I was able to smoke for 3 months before I started getting CHS episodes again.
Time to stop smoking, or at least stop smoking as much and see if that helps.
I noticed smoking bongs are way worse, especially if you smoke consistently (like more then 5-6 bowls). I would get sick nearly everyday.
But, if I just smoked a little weed mixed with tobacco and rolled into a joint, and only smoke like a gram stretched out between 5-6 smoking sessions (And no late night smoking, I try to stop smoking at 9PMish) I wasn't getting sick, but the last few days have been a little rough.

Just diagnosed yesterday with this. Didn't even know this existed until yesterday. Affected me real bad. Extreme nausea, boking, sickness, sweating loads especially early in the morning when I woke up with stomach cramps and feeling like I wanted to be sick while trying my best to stop myself. I have had this for many months now thinking I had something really wrong with my insides. Showers didn't help either it made my sweating alot worse. This can cause Kidney Failure and other serious complications. I had an IV Fluid put into my arm too to give me fluids. I have extra lansoprazoles for acid reflux plus I have to take Ondansetron to stop my vomiting. I am on my 5th day without weed and do not miss it now. Knowing what it is now has cleared alot of my anxieties when I was thinking something more serious was going on. Work with your doctors and let them know. Such a great video this too thankyou so much for sharing this.

Hey! First off, you’re not late.. If nothing else, you’re still early because so many people are still just learning about this. That cycle you described is vicious, and it’s the exact same cycle that I could never break as well so I can completely relate. To others it seems like we’re just a glutton for punishment when ultimately we’re just doing what we know will make us feel better immediately. Don’t be so hard on yourself, just acknowledging an issue and having the willingness to push for what you’re pushing for is more progress than most. Withdrawals are seriously hard to deal with, I don’t care what people say. It’s exactly what always kept me coming back to it too, despite everything happening in my life because of it. YOU know you can do it and that’s what’s most important. It’s a challenge and you just need to find the right motivation and the right amount of willpower to hold steady. Try different things each time you quit. Be active or work when you’re sober to keep your mind off things or try hanging out with people. Or traveling. Anything new to change the clockwork in your head... that’s my opinion anyways. Best of luck my friend, you’re absolutely in my prayers. Reach out if there’s anything I can do to help

It’s finally time for me to quit... I’m 6’3 and 140 pounds because I can barely eat, at my worst I have spent 6+ hours in the shower dry heaving. First of all, thank you so much for this video.
I started feeling nauseous and dry heaving a bunch a couple weeks ago. I, too, thought I had food poisoning at first, then I thought it was acid reflux when it was still going 4 days later. I felt very acidic in my chest/esophagus area.
The denial has been strong in me, but it kinda all came crashing down on me last night when I loaded up my 5th bowl of the day, before bed. I took one hit and was immediately puking, intense pain in my stomach.
Cannabis has been the only thing keeping me hanging on to life for the last 10 years. I never run out, because I'm so viciously fucked in the head I can't function as a person. Anxiety, depression, hyper-vigilance.
My life has been nothing but a nightmare that gets worse and worse every year.
I've finally accepted that it's probably CHS, and I'm devastated. Not JUST because the loss of weed, but with it, all the foods I'll never be able to enjoy again because they contain cannabinoids; a factor very few people talk about.
Especially Cinnamon and Chocolate. I'm going to miss those A LOT for the rest of my life. If I don't just kill myself.
I'm on Day 1 of not smoking, and I have hands down never felt more hopeless and mentally sick in my entire life.
I can't imagine living a long life like this. It's just not worth it. Nothing has ever been worth it.
But yet, I'll continue on, because it'd just make other people sad if I was dead. My life is no longer my own.

Everybody reacts differently, that can be agreed upon by all. But some behaviors are just not good for anyone. For example, smoking bags daily is probably not efficient, cost effective or healthy. -But stopping cold turkey to never come back is only a solution if youre confident you wont end up somewhere worse, smokin bags daily til that ends too.. Aside from the obvious bad shit, everything in moderation or mother nature will show you what abuse does. Thx bro, its good insight, ive smoked for 25 years. Financially scraping the bottom gives one an opportunity to do without, due to said lack of funds, but when you grow your own, the abundance brings no hesitation to daily use, but overdoing it only means there is some kind of misunderstanding of how things operate when introduced to the human body. Education is foremost when experimenting. Play mad scientist with your own if you must, to each their own, but follow the research and results before you get to know your other self on things that come with even an audible warning. I dont give advice, thats just my outlook, waay simplified. Thx for the warning brother, much appreciated, like your willingness to share. Takes balls dude.

I went through this very same thing, and I also have been smoking a very long time and smoke like I breath it, it’s a part of me. For immediate relief, capsaicin cream or basically chilli extract does work and so do drastic temperature changes, like hot to cold showers back and forth. I last went to the E.R. In 2019 and I would go 1-5 times a month since 2012!! Basically I found an article on R-CPD or “The No Burp Syndrome” weed or cannabis is not the cause of our nausea, and vomiting, in my opinion of course, it’s caused by not being able to release stomach or abdominal gas. Basically you can’t burp, and then you work yourself up into a panic not been able to release the gas, which then causes you to make yourself throw up for the relief of some gas escaping while you throw up. Back in 2019 I figured out never let myself hold in a burp or a fart and voila, all of my crazy nausea symptoms went away, while also never reducing the amount of cannabis consumed. Thanks for reading. I wish you well and hope you finds relief.

So glad to read this comment man, I've been searching all over trying to pinpoint what caused my "Morning sickness". I basically came to the same conclusion as you...it's a gas issue.. for me at least. My Drs did an endoscopy to check me out & gave me a prescription bout month ago and I've been good since. Never had stomach pain, jus extreme nausea in morning but I noticed the mornings without episodes seemed to be when I would wake up and pass gas haha. i thought maybe it had to do with swallowing air rather than the "cannabinoids" causing it. My condition seemed to be more correlated to that than CHS. Edit: Oh and the panicky part makes sense to me also, cause I can literally feel it in chest starting almost as a burp. Immediately i start sweating/pacing...it happened the other morning and if I could calm down maybe wouldn't vomit. Hope you're still doing well man & if you have any tips I'm open! Thanks.

I'm in my late 30's smoked pretty much daily since i was 15, other than my years in the service. The problem is the dispensaries. Weed never used to smell like chemicals or taste funky. When the gov got a hold of it its gone down hill... im currently having these issues, which is what brought me to this video... its either this or what my docs may think is Celiac disease. So will see, but im def going to keep this video in mind, never even knew CHS was a thing.

Our CB receptors have been overloaded and our hypothalamus is inflamed. A theory of mine of possibly reversing this is not just a long period of abstinence, but also cutting out all foods that cause any kind of inflammation, and sticking to diet that is geared to your brain and thyroids health and nothing else. Blueberries, walnuts, certain types of fish, look it up to find more options. It’s probably going to take more than a handful of months to fix this. I mean it took me 20 years of smoking to get sick, it’s completely logical to assume it will take as much time to reverse, if possible. Much love to all those suffering.

At 75 my husband is committed to quit cannabis. Many many years of having episodes of CHS & visits to the ER for dehydration had brought no answers. Our Dr’s would not agree that it was a real thing. So many tests were a waste. We even convinced ourselves there was still too many pesticides in the legal grows. We ruled that out with our own grows. It’s pretty tough having PTSD & not being able to use cannabis.

I'm a smoker, not a heavy one but I smoke flower, dabs, carts and edibles. More edibles than anything. I only smoke in the evening time, rarely during the day. I've started to dry out for three days every month. I like keeping my tolerance low because I've been a heavy smoker and a heavy dabber in the past and tolerance sucks. Man I hope this never happens to me. Honestly I have changed my smoking habits after having a couple friends get this. If you don't have this moderation is key !!!

You can only get CHS from eating too many edibles on a regular basis. It took about 9 months to come on for me. Followed by extreme depression, non stop crying and suicidal thoughts. Ended up not being able to eat much anymore feeling nausea everytime I ate food. After quitting for 3 months everything went back to normal. Doesn't happen when u smoke THC only happens when you eat THC. Can't stress that enough.

Got my green card, (in Mo. it’s blue) and got chs from going from edibles to oils and 6 mos. later, got everything you mentioned but I got an added bonus of migraines and extremely high blood pressure with my attacks. I also have a hiatal hernia that needs surgery which became worse from barfing so much. This is real ppl! This was 2 wks ago. I’m trying to accept it. It helped me cut down the use for pain meds but I’m like, “Now What”? I don’t drink, smoke cigs. I feel raw, sad, and angry, and feel cheated.
