  • As a Protective and Decorative Finish to our Eco Passive House, we decided to use the Shou Sugi Ban: Japanese technique of preserving/antiquing the wood.

Welcome to Episode 1O of our Tiny Eco House Build Series!
// About the Tiny Eco House Build Series //
We're building a 55m2 house in the North East of Romania, Iasi and we're covering the whole process, start to finish. We have this project in our heads since a few years now and it is finally the right moment to make it come to life !
After many nomadic years of travelling Europe we are finally building our first base camp. A place to preserve our belongings as well as a place to come back to and hide, heal, rest.

i did this for the first time for some shelves and it came out great, and it really does help fire proof it because i didnt get it dark enough to my liking so i tried it again and it took alot longer for the wood to burn

Without brushing is the best for durability. It last long for 50-100 yrs.

Looks great, I am using Yakisugi for fence trellis using Oregon timber. Built myself a charring station out of old bricks and pass the timber slats through opening in side. Tried using gas torch but took to long and uses a lot of gas. Like how you just left natural as plenty of YTubers get over aggressive with wire power brushing and remove all the charring which defeats the purpose. Plus they keep using the term shou sugi ban which would mean nothing to someone in Japan. Its a transliteration or misinterpretation probably by some academic in the US and now everyone in the West is calling it that! lol

thanks for your message! Nice to hear your opinion about it. We also didn't liked the idea of brushing the timber since we really love the alligator burn more 🤩

It is a very beautiful technique, I would like to ask you what type of nails you use to fix it to the outside, are they copper, stainless steel, galvanized steel,.... or?????

Depends on species of wood, some have corrosive compounds. Best bet is use stainless steel nails, some cladding can take screws best. Some types need pilot holes to avoid splitting. Just research the type of wood cladding and the best way to install that specific type. There are lots of free publications online about cladding. Ask a cladding specialist if you have a local supplier.

Salut, felititari pentru casa, a-ti ales cel mai bun sistem de constructie, ecologic si rapid. Vreau sa fac si eu o casa timberframe, DIY, si as vrea sa stiu cam cat a ajuns casa pe m2 ? Multumesc

Multumesc

Hi guys! I try to gather some information regarding the yakisugi siding. Can you please write me what type of nails did you use? Were they nailed directly in the siding or in the tongue of the siding. I am building a tiny house in Neamt. Thank you so much.

Salut Eliza! Din câte îmi amintesc, sunt șuruburi de 3mm grosime pe 3cm lungime. Și sunt ascunse, adică înfiletate în cantul lambriului. Spor la treaba!
