Africa Twin CRF 1100L first ride review off road on muddy UK green lanes, plus learning power turns

- Experience my first ever Africa Twin CRF 1100L adventure across the stunning UK Gloucestershire lanes with HP Mav. This was my first time riding an AT and I’ll tell you all about it in this day playing. Be ready for a few bike drops…mainly because Mav thought it would be a fun idea trying to teach me standing pivot turns…it was fun, but it was also hard!
Crisp blue skied winters day, this beast and @hp2mav [insta] showing me how it's done...what more could I want? Who's tried an Africa Twin? I was mega excited to see how this thing handles the English greenlanes...mud, ruts and puddles galore! Here’s the fun!
I’ve tried to integrate the technical review into the day’s playing so let me know if you like this style?

There will be grown man crying everywhere after watching that how very dare you take an off road bike off roading lol love it
haha that made me laugh! thanks dude
This why I subscribed. I didn’t know wether to be offended or in awe. I sound sexist but it’s fact the majority of women don’t ride bikes and then a small percent of those are in the genuine passion club. The way she talks about bikes she has the passion. The way she rides the bike she has passion. And she’s gorgeous.
@@steedwell5774 wow thanks Ste! So lovely to hear. Thank you for the sub!!! yey
And I’m one of them, great first day.
Starbucks ADV crew will weep
Just when I thought I've watched all Africa Twin reviews I came across this and this is by far the most entertaining and informative review I've come across. Subbed right away!
Aw wow. Thank you. That's super lovely to hear. Welcome!!
Of all the approximately one zillion ADV bike reviews I’ve watched this is among the very best in terms of actually getting down and dirty, doing spinning turns, and dropping and picking up the bike. Really great video! About the boots: I usually wear motocross boots and I adjust the shift lever upward slightly to make getting the boot toe under the lever easier.
Wow, thanks! That really makes me smile! It would be hard to me to have an opinion if I didn't push it so that's mega lovely to hear. Thank you for the boots tip. I'll get the lever adjusted, good shout!
Still smiling, thanks Ben
Thanks Vanessa. Ride safe (and stay COVID safe!).

Good video! I’m ordering a 23 as soon as they’re available to order. Oh, curb weight is with everything included. Fuel, oil, and coolant.
You got fantastic presentation skills. It’s like as if you’ve been presenting on television for years. I wouldn’t think you’re an amateur
Oh wow. Thank you! That's so kind
Love the way you two work together, great to have someone with you, that pushes your boundaries, and also that you have the balls to try something new, and keep trying, thinking the power turns.
and another great fun video.Like your style.
Aw we always have so much fun! Thanks so much for your support and for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent video! I know many riders who fear the seat height and weight of this bike and wouldn't attempt the terrain you just did. They also wouldn't just lay it on the ground so they could practice picking it up. Well done.
Thanks Brad. It definitely counted as my day's work out picking it up so many times! haha Thanks for the encouragement dude!
Well done picking that beast up, that looks really hard especially in the mud.
it was! Heavy but the back squat technique was ace. Exhausting fun hehe
Brilliant video I dropped my 2016 DCT Africa Twin and couldn't pick it up...im 65 thought it would be easy...nearly blew my pacemaker up ha ha..great job
Uh oh haha. 💪😋
Thanks for the video looks like you had a blast. I rode a 2018 Africa Twin the other day for the first time and it is a very confidence inspiring motorcycle and I have been on a lot of bikes. The AF will soon be in my garage!
Great job picking that beast up by yourself ,super impressed. Way ,way, way back in the day I loved my Dakar inspired bikes , had a super tenere but my favourites were my African Twin and 🥰 Transalp.
Fantastic review . Shows how much this bike has transformed tech wise over all those years .
You and me both! I was cheering at myself inside when I lifted it solo! haha It's amazing what you can do with the right technique though. I so agree, I've not ridden an old one to compare tech but really am impressed with the modern AT. Big thanks for watching Mr Shaney
Huge Respect. What an inspiration, I'm just doing my DAS Training!
Awesome!! That's mega exciting to hear
We have a GS and 2 Africa Twins in our TRF group and we're forever having to stop and help them or wait for them it's a pain in the arse. I stick with my CRF 250 which skips and dances over the mud. Much better than trying to plough through it on big behemoths.
Haha yeah I can understand that. It totally depends on the skill levels and the terrain. A big bikes never going to be as agile as a little one. Hehe
Haha yeah I can understand that. It totally depends on the skill levels and the terrain. A big bikes never going to be as agile as a little one. Hehe
Another great informative video Vanessa. As a GS rider it does pain me to say that I do like the AT!! And I now have to challenge myself to try a power turn!
haha thanks dude. They really are amazing beasts. YES!! Please report back on the power turns!!
Wow, it's a great video again.
I respect you for exploring the unknown world.
I'm glad to see your great channel again.
Always stay healthy.
👍👍👍💝💝💝💘💘💘💯💯💯
Thanks again! I love seeing your comments
This is my bike!!! Congratulations for you review,,!! Greetings for Spain,!!
Thanks! 👍 Nice bike choice! 😍
Best Africa twin vid on riding and capability
Fun to watch
Very cool. Impressive courage tackling the slide turns, Impressive strength picking up that monster :) KIA KAHA from New Zealand
Thanks! i was pretty chuffed with that lift in the mud! hehe ❤️
@@TheGirlOnABike Watched the electric Trials vid today - looked like amazing fun and great for riding skills, without too much speed. Looked up Trials in NZ. If I can find an open day or something, I might go check it out and have a go:)
Awesome. You'll love it!! Let me know!
Never seen anyone do a spin turn off the bike. Great job lifting it, not always so simple if you’ve hurt yourself
Thanks Dan
Oh my God you're fantastic, I found your channel because I have an AT 1100 ADV SP Dct that I love, you are contagious, full of excellent energy. God Bless You. Have a wonderful year. (Gilberto From Portugal)
Welcome aboard! Wow, thanks Gilberto! So glad you enjoy
I really have a hard time w/ power turns as well especially in sand where the front wheel wants to dig in. I love your vids. Thank you much.
Glad it's not just me haha. I need to practice them more. Still not got them dialled lol
Ah finally Honda AT, Luv that machine ☺ great all round video. I actually think it's the most off-road I've seen done on a demo bike in the UK. Barring 44 teeth one that is. Keep up the great work. Tks
That's so cool to hear, thank you. I really did enjoy it. I'm planning...when covid allows...do do another adventure, maybe Wales and push it a little more. Thanks so much for the positive energy Dave
Hey Vanessa. Patrick here from Denmark. I was watching Itchy Boots here on TH-cam and then one of your videos popped up! I love the content and the editing. Keep the videos coming and keep up the good work 👍😊🏍
Hey Patrick, oh wow, that's so cool! Thanks for watching and for taking the time to say hi! I'll look forward to seeing your name pop up in future comments. Thanks Patrick
The AT is a very nice bike. Great video and excellent review. The best review I’ve seen on the Africa Twin. You’re a natural at this type of review. Excellent! In the late 1990’s, I worked in Red Hill and was often over in Wells and Bath. I think that’s close to where you all were riding maybe??? Beautiful country side. Ride safe Vanessa! Fantastic review; keep these coming!
WOW thank you. That's so kind and lovely of you. Makes me smile. We were near Stow on wold in Gloucestershire, so beautiful
@@TheGirlOnABike .... yes... very beautiful area of the country. You’re a natural at this type of review! Just being yourself makes it easy and fun to watch!
"Wow"... impressive, you're the real deal. Love your personality
Wow, thank you! That's really kind of you, thanks for taking the time to comment dude
of all the places to go turning and dropping that bike. right next to a dung heap...brilliant fun!
haha yeah,...looking back it was an off choice hey! haha but it was ideal, slippy and flat ish! lol
Great video.
Im in the process of selling my GSA. Had too many nigles for my liking, especially with the ESA. Fixed under warranty but took over 7 weeks to sort.
Im wanting a work horse, but still something i can have a little blast on.
I've narrowed the replacement donw to
1090 Adventure
Honda Africa Twin 1100(base).
Thanks so much for watching, super pleased you enjoyed it! How did the bike choice go? Hoping you went with the Africa Twin hehe
Nice looking bike. The color shows off the stile very well. You were really getting the hang off that power turn. Not easy work lifting that bike up lying down so flat.👏
Thanks Enda, much more practice needed! I hope to get them like Mav did one day!
I think I'm in love. With the bike as well 😜
This is a great bike, I test rode it just before Christmas.
It really is! Lots of fun to be had!
Best motorcyclereview EVER!
Now I’m forever dreaming about the day when I’ll hear “wibblibibbilliblibbi...” from my motorcycles rear end...
Again - fantastic review! Extra good for me who’s 1.70 or so, and I am built like a Chimpanzee = long arms, short legs. ☺️ I can not flat foot the low seat AT, but... almost!!! 😎
Love the bike!
That's made me giggle. Thanks dude 💖
I was looking for some good offroad reviews for the AT and it brought me here. What an awesome ride out in the puddles! Great review as well.
Aw thank you. Super happy to hear you enjoyed
I have to admire you taking something that heavy and powerful green laning looks like great fun 👍👍👍👍
I watched repeatedly to see your technique. That you! I’m 61 and will use it on my bikes if needed.
oh cool!
Great review, thanks, in fact, the best and funniest review I’ve ever seen, keep on going 👍🏻
Wow, thanks! That's so cool, thank you! Yey! I'm smiling lots hehe ❤️❤️❤️
Subscribed. Just bought an AT so found this vid! Those lanes looked like a lot of fun. Have to say, the HP is awesome!
Thanks for the sub! Yey. That really was a fun day!
Thanks for the clip. I ride with a set of Gaerne Trials boots that offer adequate protection, they are not extremely hard and have a relatively low and soft sole for great feeling of the controls. They are also 100% waterproof (tried to drown them and failed!). BTW, you look great but blue eyes, blue nails and blue jacket better suits a Yamaha!
P.S. For the power turn, you need to "surprise" the rear wheel with sudden power which means you need to dump the clutch on one go (conversely, slipping the clutch helps with traction).
Yey thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the tip
@@TheGirlOnABike at your service!
👍
Wow! You look so good with that African! 😏👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 I love the ADV Sport. It's my possible next bike...
ooo that's exciting! adv is certainly fun!!
Brilliant stuff mate
Yet another fantastic review.
Must admit I was very impressed by your lifting that massive bike in the mud.
Love you saying you were starting to sound like Jeremy Clarkson.
As far as I'm concerned your better than him & an absolute natural.
Can't wait till your next review
aww haha thanks Jeremy!
Just bought one of these in that colour as well. Great to see its capable and also how much fun you can have on it.
Nice. Good choice!!
Great video as always but the Jeremy Clarkson quote "On that bomb shell" was the killer for me Vanessa 😂
Haha uh oh
I own a honda crf 150L here in the Philippines. Wish i could upgrade to higher engine displacement soon like yours. It looks so cool and powerful. Ride safe my friend!
Oh very cool! the CVFs are lovely too
Recently found your videos and have been watching with my 4 year old daughter. We’re both in awe of your badassery! Thanks for inspiring us. #girldad
Aw that's so lovely to hear hehe. Say hi to your daughter 🥰😘
Bet you feel more confident on the enduro bike after being on that big boy. Funny watching people trying to get them bikes up. You nailed it ,few guys out there are going to be having a word with them selves 😂💪
hhaahaaa thanks dude! That made me laugh. Yeah so so true, the enduro bike is nearly a toy in comparison hehe...a highly tuned race toy but so little in comparison 😘
This review made me want the AT even more!
Haha yey!! Sorry not sorry 😋
A modern day English rose. Not on horse back, but African twin.
Ding dong!
Those green lanes looked like good fun! My Africa’s shift lever was way too low from the factory for me to fit my mx boots underneath, so I had to remove it from the spline and rotate it up a bit. Lucky that your hand guard just popped off there... I snapped mine into about three pieces first time I dropped my bike in the snow... I don’t think they’re really any use to be frank hahaha
oh gosh! Opps haha. Good tip on the lever! Thanks dude
OMG fully captivated!
It surely is an amazing bike, I was offered a nice discount to buy the 1100 but I chose the 1000 instead. The 1100 has got crazy amount of buttons, million levels of traction control, engine braking etc. I like simplicity therefore went for the 1000 option.
But the Adventure Sports (is that correct name?) version looks gorgeous! Shame the bike is so tall!
I use my CRF1000 for travelling only, been to Norway 4x, visited Switzerland, Austria and plenty other countries in eastern Europe.
Greetings from Bristol
Awesome. Sounds like some good trips!
Well done Vanessa great video good review and entertaining.
Thanks so much! I love that you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment too dude. Yey. 👍
Wow great vid, I like the glamour but it's your off road ability that's the watch. I went to my local Honda dealer and sat on one. I know things are different with covid. The salesperson sat in his seat then when I left he said any good ? I said not for me. He never asked why ? I worked in sales for years and this is a cardinal sin. I'm 174cm and it felt too high and not for me. I've owned a GS with a lower seat which was manageable. You told me there is a lower seat option ! If I go and buy one you should get the sale ! As it is BMW or Triumph might get my money
haha aw thank you. That's pretty miserable sales story to hear, sorry to hear that. I sadly doesn't surprise me. I've walked into a show room before and been faced with the sales guy asking "so if you knew how to ride, which bike would you pick?" Like really? OMG haha. I'd say keep open to the AT, it's awesome! But so is the Tiger and GS lol. So many options
Vanessa, you are a beast!! in the most polite and nicest possible sense. Woman handling that bike and picking it up so many times was a testament to you and the recovery from your hip injury. Wow. As for your backend shenanigans 🤔🤔 I will just say lucky Ruckymonster 😂😂
Your enthusiasm and bravery taking bikes off road leaves me feeling rather humble, apart from the fact that I have to pay for my bike so need to be a bit wary or BMW won’t want it back lol, I would be doing green lanes ASAP.
Your presentation and technical specs are remarkable, considering you do not seem to have any prompts. You could certainly teach some so called professional presenters a thing or two. Plus to top all of that you’re a beauty.
We are not worthy. Keep up the great work and your riding is becoming fantastic. You should think about starting your own riding school one day ❤️❤️
WOWWWW! That is the most incredible comment ever to read. Thank you!! Gosh. Every word is so kind, I'm smiling through and through! Thank you. I'm so glad you enjoyed. I really love riding and being able to share it all makes me so happy! Big thanks for such huge volumes of positive vibes!! If you're on LinkedIn or Facebook and fancied given me that as a review haha ❤️❤️❤️
I am not on LinkedIn but will post as review on FB if I work out how to do it. 🤣

@@AndyTheBadgerBarton Yey!! thank you!!! So kind of you to do the review
Girl, you are impressive!
Your only 5'7"? I'm 5ft 7 and need a ladder to get on that bike! I thought you were at least 6 ft tall. Awesome channel, keep up the good work!
Haha, nope, alot of people assume I am taller and bigger than I am!
Hat off to you for your first day on an AT. Admire your skill and guts.
aw thank you!
Well done fantastic review and looked great fun, take my hat off to you for lifting that heavy bike around👍the bike is nice
Thanks David. Super happy to hear you enjoyed
Great review! Looking forward to seeing your channel grow!
Aw thank you Robert
It looked like you had a fun day Vanessa. One thing to remember ... it's not how tall you are to fit a motorcycle. It's how long your legs are ... the inseam lenght. I started out at 6' and now am 5'11" (back disks and some years lol) but my inseam has not changed it's still only 30 inches ... And I will not try an English Rack to gain some height.
This is a great point! So I have today measured and my inside leg is 78cm! Thanks for the thought, very very good point Mike!
Can’t believe she picked that beast up in the mud! How did you hide the crane cables? Nice job, well done!
hehe thanks dude, that made me smile
loved every single minute. i wonder how tf can you run so fast on those muddy tracks😧 it was a great info about your height-seat-foot landing on the ground. thx for the amazing video.
ps. you said it's a 24 liters, was it a misunderstanding or there are other versions of standard 1100 that im missing? cause 24 on standard would be super cool
Aw thank-you hehe It was a lot of fun. Good question maybe I got my numbers mixed up, so sorry about that but good spot
Love this girl. Great channel.
Aw yey thank you! ❤️
Great video, fantastic review! I have an Africa Twin as well and can confirm it is an awesome bike! Congratulations beautiful Vanessa :)
aw thank you
Looks like there is no real tip over protection for that exhaust, am I wrong? I guess if you had saddle bags that might do it.
Great video.
Do you not like a chin mount camera?
The pipe kind of had a guard on it but nothing else. I've dropped it several times now and the pipe is untouched. It almosts lands more forwards. Saying thay Honda might do a pipe guard but I just don't have it.
Chin mounts. Emotional one lol. I had one and then... I didn't have it or my gopro haha I need to try again but make sure I have the back up strap on as they're really good. Just losing a gopro with it failing didnt make me too happy lol
My next bike a Africa twin enjoyed this watch
Mega!! Awesome choice. Thanks for watching
Amazing I have de 2019 Adventure Sport with touratech suspensión and is amazing, one of my favorites motorcycles and the best dual porpoises for me
nice!!! Sounds good
Didn’t you have the feeling that bike is not heavy when drive it on road and off? The first time when I jump on the it was feeling like a lightweight bike. It was so easy to handle I was flying over the mud. It is great to see how you pick-up the bike. Honda should be proud on you.
aw thanks dude! So appreciate that. Yeah I agree. It certainly doesn't feel its size once you're riding.
Loved the vid. Really interesting and entertaining seeing you on the AT and the green lanes. I want an AT now!
Haha sorry for adding to your bike wish list hehe 🤪
Establish dominance 🤣🤣. Great review, seriously, really great review! I'm trying to get one soon
That was epic! I wouldn’t attempt that on a mountain bike lol
Can only echo the comments on here, you’re ticking all the boxes, keep it up!
👍
Can’t wait to get one of those.
Very beautiful review, thank you.
My pleasure! thank you
HI Vannesa you made comment about having trouble changing gear with your enduro boots on, try moving the gear lever up 1 spline on the gear change shaft or on a big trail bike it might have a threaded bar to alter the gear lever tip hight.
Great idea, thanks Ian. Far easier than a boot change!
It’s an amazing bike and glad that u loving it... it’s so versatile... got the chubbier sister which is also capable for some decent off-roading... Also impressed how easily u picked up this heavy beauty 👍🏼 Greetings, Jörn
Thanks Joern. I was pretty chuffed in that mud. I was rather tired by bed time! lol
@@TheGirlOnABike Great workout 😀😴. Btw, I like you Camo riding pants... what brand are they if I may ask? 🤗
You’ve convinced me. Time to get an adventure bike and get dirty.
YESSSS!!! Love this hehe, check out my latest video on the Himalayan, that's a fun starter th-cam.com/video/zLWWREZWv9o/w-d-xo.html
Good job. I love this bike as well as I own one. You are wrong about the weight and the fuel tank though. The weight is 236kg overall (full tank) for the DCT version and 226kg for the manual; barwork not included. And it has got a 18.8l fuel tank. The Adventure Sports has got 24.8l fuel capacity.
Mega. Thanks for the corrections!
@@TheGirlOnABike you are welcome. No big deal. Great video, great riding. You are skilled.
And it seems that you have enjoyed the Twin the same way I enjoy it every day. Great bike.

Cool girl very good video fun to watch my respect You can handle the AT very well. I own one and love it and in some situations especially when fully loaded with gear it's a task and 1/2 to pick her up.

Good vid and I like your jacket👍
Thanks! It's by Weise, it's actually a mens jacket and I LOVE it! It's a little big on me but so comfortable and practical that I don't mind looking like a 16 year old boy haha
Wonderful 🙌🙌🙌. Please which tyres were on the AT ? And what was the bike of your buddy ? 🙏
I don't actually rate the tyres I had here, I'd recommend the Michelin Anakee wilds if off road focused, that's a 50/50 road to off. Buddy was on a HP2, beast of a bike
Great video , nice to see the mighty twin in its natural habitat .. mine just sits in the garage dreaming of the future lol.. what tyres are on it (ax41 ?) my road tyres suck 😂 great video , keep up the sterling work 👌
haha thanks dude. I wouldn't really recommend these ones though, they get the job done but aren't the best I've experienced. I'd probably go Anakee if I had the choice. Let me know when you get the beast out! Sounds like an adventure [when lock-down allows] is on the cards!
Loving this channel 👍
Excellent video! Really entertaining.
Yey that's so mega to hear. Thanks dude
Power is not changed in any mode. Only the throttle response is changed in the P-mode. Ground clearance is 250mm.
👌🏼👌🏼 ah cool
I got an Adventure last fall. Its a dirt bike with a really big engine!
Its too bad I'm allergic to tech. Its got too many gadgets and doo dads for my simple mind.
It is a joy to ride on & off road.
haha I can understand that! As long as you're out there with a smile on your face that is all that matters!
Who are you kidding?....You're a man on a bike!
Haha thank you... I think 🤔🤣🤣💪
Awesome video, although I’m still not sure what happened with those pickles? 🤣 Looks like you had a ton of fun on the bike. Also well done for practicing the turn slide. I’m going to give this a go as soon as we hit some off road with the Tiger Rally Pro. Must also check out that app you mention for route finding - thanks for sharing 🙌🏼
thanks dude, so lovely to hear you enjoyed. Let me know how the turns go! I've still not mastered them on the AT! haha beast
Absolutely loved this video just one question which bime is better the AT or the BMW
Thanks Kevin. I personally would go AT. The BMW does win for really long road focus stuff but it just feels so big off road. The AT seems to balance it all for me.
@@TheGirlOnABike thanks so much for the reply i really appreciate it

Try a Trail CT125, that will be even funner than your enduro.
So many bikes to try! hehe sounds good to me!
Love the bike, love the channel. I have the AT 1100 adventure sports model and she’s a dream. What’s your thoughts on the Weise onyx evo jacket? Thinking of ordering one for me 😜
thanks dude. I really enjoyed this jacket. I've since swapped to Dainese kit as I've found they actually do some decent womens kit...instead of me in massive mens kit. I really rated the Onyx though. Comfortable, practical, warm and dry.
Now that's how you do a review!
aw cheers dude!
