Riding blind on KTM 450 rally replica - Morocco Desert Challenge part 3

- Warning this episode contains graphic images⚠️ I didn’t have a good start to the day having woken with some sort of allergy / reaction to heat / or dust in eyes issue. Medics suggested antihistamine but I was hard on vision with the weight of my puffy eyelids and also with a thick head. With temperatures due to be even hotter than previously I had a decision to make…
Tablets down 💊 it was to the start line for me and Big Buddy. I had to fight! The first 80km was tough trying to find my rhythm and see, but as the pills kicked in the eyes eased and I found my flow. By lunch I was feeling solid and had demolished my 4.5 litres of water already! The heat started to intensify and post lunch hitting the dunes in the mid day heat felt cruel. The light with the sun at its highest was hard on the eyes that were already struggling to see contrast but I rode steady and smooth. Only three spills, two simple lifts and one spin round on the side of big dune recovery, pleased there with my riding. The heat was brutal. Brutal brutal!! More intense and so I just drank and drank. Total fluids consumed in my 7h30 riding day was 10.5 litres and I stopped for 9 pees.
I felt like I was riding for my life with the heat. If I stopped or fell I knew I would dramatically overheat and it could be serious. So I just pushed on!! Post dunes the “shit tracks” with no rhythm or flow, just snotty lumps and sand with lots of turns meant digging so deep. Words can. It explain what racing and fighting very technical terrain in 46-52 degree (125 Fahrenheit) feels like. Horrific.
Mad proud to have made the finish. A LOT of bikes didn’t even start today and many did not finish or are in the process of being rescued.
💪 I also came 29th in stage 5 of the Morocco Desert Challenge. Fighting on!!
Also. RIP. Sadly disaster struck again this race with the desert taking a second life. Malle Moto rider Bram van der Wouden (#110) succumbed to the heat and exhaustion. Other participants found him lying next to his motorbike. Bram presumably stopped to rest. The medical intervention team arrived very quickly but there was nothing more they could do. The day before a terrible racing accident took Laurent Lichtleuchter.
We all accept the risks of racing but fully support the organisation in cancelling the moto stage 6. The heat in the dunes is exceptional and unforgiving, and we are very vulnerable on bikes when the temperature peaks at 52°c / 125f in this heat wave.
We will rest and allow the body to recuperate as much as possible before the final two stages of the Morocco Desert Challenge.
RIP. My love and thoughts are with their families. No race is worth a life so you have my word that I will not fight too hard. 🖤

Your honesty is refreshing... and one of the reasons why you are so highly appreciated... your determination is also hugely inspiring ✨️ ... good to see you found something to help the uncomfortable eyes situation 👍. so sorry for the families that have suffered loss, sincerely my heart goes out to them 💜
Thank you, i mega appreciate that! Mine too ❤️
Vanessa! I really appreciate you sharing the ugly and hard parts of the rallye and what you're going through. Keep it real! It helps us appreciate just how difficult these are and what all the racers experience. It's one thing to watch a rally from a helicopter's camera, and completely different seeing it from helmet-view and how it affects you at night and in the mornings. You're amazing!
Thank you, i do enjoy showing all sides of it so people can see the full picture! So i mega appreciate this comment! Thanks for watching and for your support!
you are a true survivor Vanessa, what a pilot and what a super girl you are,....enjoyed every minute of your rally, I know how much you have to go through to make a 30 mins video, you are a Hero
aw thank you, that really really means a lot to me, thank you
❤@@TheGirlOnABike
Huge respect Lass, warts and all is what makes it real, condolence to the families of the lost.
Thank tou
Cracking stuff Vanessa, you continue to be an inspiration to get up and go, even when you're not feeling up to it! You've well earned that hotel break, that pool is going to be incredible!
Aw yey thank you so much!
A great watch.. I’m a new subscriber! I love your stuff , very much different, to the mainstream. Love the warts and all approach. Please keep it up. Cheers.
Aw yey welcome! Thanks for subscribing and watching, hope you enjoy the videos woo!
Vanessa, you are one tough cookie. Take care of yourself, love your vids.
Thank you so much!
Absolutely love your videos, and you keeping it real is what makes you and your channel Absolutely one of the best there are! ML&R ❤ Im so sorry for the loss of your fellow racers. Prayers for comfort and peace to you and their families...❤
Thank you so much, i really appreciate your support!
Mate you look absolutely shot. Your super determination earns huge respect. To hear that there have been lives lost is tragic news.
Thanks dude, mega appreciate that, yea unfortunately lives were lost and even more unfortunate that it is quite common in big rally's like this
How in the world do you only have 51k subscribers!?!?
I've watched a few other desert race youtubers, but yours is likely the best I've seen.
Aw thank you that is so lovely to hear, I mega appreciate that and your support 😊 p.s I just hit 52k hehe 🥳
Keep it up Vanessa! Great to see the real stuff!
Thank you! Will do!
that's a tough game mate, you are a true warrior!
Aw thank you mega appreciate it
It's a perfect level of honesty
Thanks, honesty is key in my opinion !

determination personified, much respect, star x
Aw thank you
I agree with everyone here I appreciate the reality you show when you are doing a rally. I feel so bad for you, your eyes must have hurt so much.
Aw thanks, yea it was super painful and uncomfortable but I kept on going and finished yey!
Hi Vanessa, just finished watching Parts 1-3 of the Moroccan Desert Challenge. What an epic and demanding race you had, great camera work and commentary. You also know your how to look after yourself in those savage conditions which kept you in the race. I couldn’t imagine how hot it must have been. Just a quick question, was there a Part 4 uploaded or to be uploaded for Stage 7 and 8 on your channel ? Keep up the great work. Cheers David
Aw thanks David. That's super kind to hear. It's definitely tough out there. Yes part 4 is coming in a few days!! I had some audio issues at the end but just about got them fixed. It's a big ending!!
@@TheGirlOnABike Thanks Vanessa, can’t wait to see Part 4. Cheers David
Plenty of artificial princesses out there. You, my dear are very refreshing!! Keep it up!!
Aw thank you, I will 💪
Great video! Thank you for filming us (the start crew). Me at 17:10. Hope to see you again at MDC 2024!

Just simply awesome. 🎉
Thanks woo!
And doing the rally alone is definitely something else too... you're one badass chicka! And we all behind you all the way.
Aw thank you!
The honest reality of what life on a race is like is much appreciated, you have a powerful spirit. Thanks for the ride along, good luck
Yey, super glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
I do love your honesty. It's refreshing to listen to someone that speaks the truth (no agenda. I agree with your assessments. Just be careful with your being hard on yourself. Your failures are better than most peoples successes. I'm amazed at your abilities, mental & physical.
That is lovely to hear, I appreciate that alot!
My sincere condolences and prayers for the family with this terrible news, please everyone take care, regards Mark x
Thank you ❤️
Love the realness. Not much glory, but plenty oF grit, yeah...!
💪
Your honesty is what makes all of your stuff what it is, honest and true think this is totally what people want from a channel, if not then you might as well watch a film. Love all of your stuff, keep safe and keep posting.☺
Aw I appreciate that! Thank you very much
Nothing about you is ugly V, on the outside or the inside!! Very inspiring lady, keep on keeping on.
You should be very proud of yourself...... SMASHING IT 🎉
Aw super lovely thank you!
I've watched a couple of your videos over the years but I have a new found respect for you and for your channel after this one. You're not f*ckin around. Respect. This one made me subscribe.
Hope you enjoyed the HAT on the Harley.
Wow thanks I mega appreciate that! 😁
Vanessa….soooooooooo much respect. You are an inspiration. If I could take your pain, I would.
Aw that is super kind of you to say, mega appreciate it and your support!
You're a tough bird. I admire the way you bounce off the ground, get up, and forge on. Godspeed!
Never give up 💪 thanks
Wow! Thank you for your combination of transparency, determination, and doing the work to bring yourself back to an optimistic mindset so you can press on. I relate to the need to balance those same things when I'm riding through the jungles of Cambodia on my trusty old Honda XR400R. Ride on, you! It's both inspiring and fun to watch.
Thank you so much, it definitely was a struggle but i did it and im so proud yey! Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed it!
Love your honesty 👍👁️👁️👁️👁️👁️👁️👁️👁️
Always! Thanks for watching
The honesty is great, had a bit of a laugh when you said it was epic so much fun but also brutal. Been on a few rides like that and it’s so true, can be torture but at the same time the best fun. Looking forward to the next video
Haha yup I think i still would stick with that description 😅 thanks for watching and for your support!
That courageous life of yours is an absolute beast! I couldn’t do it. *I will stay on, or near the road way. Salute to you.
Oh yup, sure is! Thanks so much!
❤️💪🏾
the deal of motorcycling is very clear through you , that is for sure !!!!!!!!!
👍
Gogo desert girl 😎 amazing determination! Love it
Hehe thanks
I love how real you are! There’s way too much clickbait and overly chipper videos that are just contrived and feel fake. You’re my new favorite vlogger! You show us what it’s really like to be out there without any BS. From one rider to another keep keeping it real! Keep on riding like you stole it! ❤🔥👍
Aw yey! Thanks so much i mega appreciate your support and your kind words! I always keep it real and try to show all sides of everything 😎
Love your honesty, it’s why we watch. You are real!!!
Aw yey thank you
I love to see all this rally glitter and glamour 😉
Besides the physical aspect of it all that requires a pretty good physical condition it's also a mental challenge. Great work!
Haha thanks🤪 glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching
Yes yes yes! I really enjoy your channel. You are super real and your honesty is refreshing. Keep it up. You are obviously going through it!!
Thank you! Will do!
Hi Vanessa
Watched earlier on the phone and just finished watching on a bigger "confuser" screen. Makes you look much better.
We had salt pill dispensers in the engine rooms of the ship as temps could run (where I stood watch most of the time) 110 F near ventilation to 170-180F at the steam powered feed pumps. Make up scares me more than any natural look. It's great that you could record video as much as you did under the circumstances.
I'm sure you stayed strong to race the final two days. As always take care.
Hehe love it! Thanks so much for watching, twice hehe!
Love your videos , and your honesty keeping it real, love it
Yey thanks so much
Love the honesty. Don’t change . 🤙🏼 go kick some ass 💪🏼
Honestly is always the way, I like to show all aspects not just the good! Thanks for your support wooo!
You are absolutely amazing!!
Thanks 🙂
One very tough cookie Vanessa , more spirit than a distillery ! The Honesty & openness of your journey is inspiring. These events are often underestimated in the toughness and brutality i’m sure! Fair play Vanessa 🙌🏼🏍️
Aw such lovely words, thank you so much, mega appreciate it!
Way to go girl, impressive. Best to you.
Thanks so much!
Lots of love, great effort and impressive endurance. I suck in heat and in 39 temps I become quite lethargic, no matter how much water I drink. Your honesty and no glamour to reality footage is appreciated. Good to see your eyes had improved, and you got spend a night in a air-conditioned room with a decent bed. Great content, sleep well, ride well. Respect
Aw yey thanks so much!
Brutal ride and fab watch. Warts and all approach to this post shows the grit and determination you have, you should be so proud.
Aw thank you kindly! Mega appreciate it
you have so mutch Power to do this - and i love your "Frogeyes" :) thak God its getting better - go on
Frog eyes hehe love it, thanks for watching and making me giggle!
You are incredible Vanessa! Keep on going, your resilience in one of your best attributes.
Thank you so much!
Hello , hey i find watching you so amazing ,your such a strong person , i enjoy any videos you manage to post up keep going thanks so much for sharing !! awesome stuff cheers steve / Australia . im 64 and now riding a ktm690 R , still going never say never
Aw thanks Steve, mega appreciate your support and kind words! Love that you are still riding, keep doing what you love! 💪
Massive inspiration, loving your videos. Thanks for sharing your experience. What a trooper!
Yey thanks so much for watching, super glad to hear that you enjoy the videos, plenty more rolling out weekly! ❤️
You have awesome sand skills...it's tough riding in a sandy land scape. Well done
I mega appreciate this comment, thank you 🙂
What a race!! And what a great inside look from your bike during the ride. That dune at 5.32 was crazy, it seems you really can't see what behind the top of a dune before you actually hit the top. i believe because of being in top condition and seriously taking care of your body and mind you have managed to come this far. Without an serious accident I'm pretty sure you'll make it to the top 20 overall. I don't have children, but if you were my daughter I would explode with pride🤗 Gó on that bike, Girl!! 😎👊
Aw this is such a lovely comment, thank you so much, i really appreciate your kindness and support!
Wow thats not a bit of light gravel. Not a very glamerous thing to do but done so well. Some epic riding and with the news about crashes and heat exaustion you are in a really tought and extreme place. Great Video, thanks.
Thanks for watching im glad you enjoyed it!
Just amazing... well done.
Yey thanks!
massiv respect and admiration for your accomplishments!
Ah thank you so much that is mega kind
I tip my hat. Toughest of the tough.
Aw well thank you 🙂
Recently found your channels. Love the Rally and competition content. And the honesty 😊
Yey, welcome! Thanks for your support, and watching! Wooo!
It's always great to watch Vanessa. I've been rocking the puffy eyes look for a few years now in my latter years.
You look fine😂
Heheh uh oh! Thanks
That's an amazing experience. Yo are so strong, that's impressive! Good job Vanessa!
Thank you so much! I definitely didn't feel strong the whole time lol
@@TheGirlOnABike but you are. And don’t forget it. You are such a good example for people out there. God bless you.
Your doing something really extreme.
Good for you .
Definitely out the comfort zone . 😮
Aw thanks!
Another wonderfully inspirational video, when I finish an Ultra run, ride of swim your whole body is puffy. We do we do it?😂😂😂
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Haha I don't know but I love it hehe
Awesome continuation after that horrendous prang. Any puffiness is a blessing compared to what might have been.. Go Vanessa 👍🏻👍🏻
Definitely!! Thanks
love the honesty vanessa! Another great series from you, thanks for sharing the insight of rally life x
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching yey!
Keep it real 👍and keep it honest ☝️. It’s reality don’t sugarcoat it 👍, great job .
Always! Thanks 😁
Vanessa, wow, keep it up, love seeing the dirt and grime of all this. You're a very fit lady, stay hydrated better to pee your pants than get a clot.
Regarding me and my cycle accident on 4th June. Well after five visits to the fracture clinic and getting signed off for physio on the last NHS visit I went private 11 weeks in.
Instantly said i wasn't right. They missed my dislocated shoulder and spiraling cracks through my arm ball joint. Urgently sent back to NHS trauma for CT scan, remember I've been suffering now for 11 weeks, to confirm and major surgery a month ago now to put the shoulder back and plated the whole upper arm and ball. So forth month now in a sling with people gently lifting my arm as I'm still not allowed to use my muscles to ensure the humerus and ball heal. Next fracture clinic 11 oct. Wish me luck its going to be a long road ahead and thats if its successful which I hope it is.
Good luck in the rally.
Thank you and all the best in your recovery, stay positive and do the work, you got this 💪
You have some amazing adventures! I am 75 and wish I could tagalong. Best of luck to you and all you do stay tough!🚴🏿👏
Aw I mega appreciate that, thanks for following along woo!
Love honesty
👍
this is what us that will never experience the realities want to see dirt and swelling etc, tough as can be you are keep it up, of course its sad that people die but you all go in to it with your eyes open and most of us ride bikes regularly I guess understand and accept some level of risk.
Thanks mega appreciate the acknowledgement!
Above and beyond.
Wooo!
❤ respect earned, your poor body and mind deserves that pool and aircon be safe
Aw thanks mega appreciate it! Hehe oh yeah!
❤❤ great watching you
Yey! And thank you for watching!
I appreciate the honesty.
It's not enjoyable watching you suffer.
Kind of a mix of I'm glad it's you not me and slightly wishing I could do it.😂
Haha I appreciate the honesty 🤪
Don’t change how you do things it’s nice to see how things actually are
👍
Hi your channel is great, really like motorcycle travel channels atm. Keep the good vids coming, thanks!
Yey, glad you like them! Thanks for following along
I appreciate your honesty, and thanks for sharing I had a brain Biopsy and when my close friend saw my after my operation he cried because i looked nothing like me and I had lots of stuff going on but I was to poorly to be imbarist 🙏,don't worry you still look good ❤
Oh wow im sorry that you had to go through that, i hope you are doing well now, take care! And thank you
Goddamn Vanessa, you’re an absolute legend 😂❤
Haha yey thank you
Damn Vanessa, you looked rough but like you said.... can't expect anything else to be fair.
👍
Keep it real, THIS is life!
💪
You are one tough lady!
Hehe thanks
Keep it real…that’s why we watch!
Yey! I will! Thanks for watching and your support
Stay safe Vanessa. I admire this stubbornness in you but remember it's ok to say enough.
Hehe thanks
Do i watch watch your channel for beautiful good looks NAH, I your candor and honesty, you show biking, not from a girly point of view, but a bikers point of you, warts and all
Good luck with the rest of the rally
Aw thanks I mega appreciate that, thanks for watching and your support!
Holy smoke that looked hard. Lifting the bike after a drop in the sand must be really energy-sapping, especially in that heat. I’m glad the puffy eyes went away relatively quickly. You looked awful at the end of the days riding, then glamorous again soon after, so how do you do that? Oh yes, I know - you are VR! Good that you are getting quicker and able to get back to the bivouac earlier that previous rallies.
Haha double edged compliment, love it! Thanks Dad 😝
Well done Vanessa, it takes a lot of courage to do what you’re doing, never any need to apologise to any of us, the total brutality that you put yourself through is unbelievable, I was also educated a little too regarding your puffy eyes…I didn’t realise that a lack of salt could do that, I knew lack of water could 😮, but what a difference afterwards, stay safe champ 👍🏻 and so sorry to hear about the two deaths, condolences to their families and friends 😞
Thank you so much for your kindness, understanding and support its mega appreciated
My favorite person on the Internet 😊
Awww hehehe yey thank you
Hi Vanessa! Thank you for the content ... and the honesty! As part of that I would love a video on what it cost to take part in something like this. Would be utterly amazing to take part in one some day, but I imagine it is quite expensive. Keep on kickin" butt!
You are so welcome, i am glad you enjoyed it! Great idea, thanks
Hey @The Girl on a Bike. Is there any possibility that Profuse sweating washed mascara into your eyeballs? Looks like the swelling under your eyes went down a lot at the end of this video.
I have seen maybe people with a swollen eye but it was always a hornet sting. I have to look back through your videos to try and figure out what bike you are riding.
Great thought but no it was an allergic reaction. It's a KTM450 Rally replica 🙂
@@TheGirlOnABike Thanks seems I saw a different video that was a Review for the KTM Rally Replica. If I read correctly they have been having so many Deaths on the Big Twin Cylinder Bikes in the Dakar Rallye ect that they banned them and just race 450 CC bikes now?
You are amazing those dunes are so deceptive? Go pro can never show how steep or difficult they are? Well done 👍 xx
Yup the camera never shows just how big dunes, hills etc are! So thank you I mega appreciate that
Love your video Vanessa even if it was a year ago. Orbital oedema (swelling of the eyes) is nearly always connected to the kidneys. I think the salty Coca-Cola may have been the culprit . No Harm in an antihistamine but it was probably related to the kidneys/being laid flat and dehydration. Just for next time so you know. Love the real honesty of your video. Love you. Terrific editing.😊
Thanks so much for the kind words and thoughtful advice! That’s really interesting about the kidney! Mega appreciate your support and glad you enjoyed the video! 😊
I live up in the north and don't like sand, heat etc but it is a perfect armchair adventure for me!
Hahah love it, thanks for watching!
Keep telling it like it is.
I will! 💪
hi iv just watched your intro now i understand wow what a story im from cheltenham hope we meet one day that would be cool
Aw thank you. Yeah it's certainly been a journey. I'm sure our paths will meet sometime ❤️
