  • In this episode we are on a wildlife rescue operation with Sumatran conservation organisation SUMECO, to save an endangered Slow Loris, one of the cutest animals in the world (according to the internet!) and also one of the world's only venomous mammals. Slow Loris' are often taken from the wild for the illegal pet trade as well as for traditional medicines & rituals. The Slow Loris population is now declining and it is important to protect every individual and return them to the wild if possible.
    The Slow Loris is (like us humans) a primate. They are nocturnal and live in the high canopies of secondary and primary forest, where they like to feed on fruit as well as saps. They can eat invertebrates too. The Slow Loris has a unique defence mechanism where they secrete a toxin from a gland on their elbow, they lick that toxin, which gives them a toxic bite. This is fatal to many animals, and dangerous to people - making them not good pets!
    ABOUT SUMECO: it is an organisation set up by Bobi Handoko, a conservationist. SUMECO are based on the outskirts of the Gunung Leuser National Park, a sanctuary for wildlife, including the Orangutan, Sumatran Rhino, Elephant, Gibbon, Sun Bear, Pangolin, Slow Loris and other iconic mammal species

Collating all the data we are gathering will help build a picture of which habitats are key to sustaining the largest diversity of life on planet earth.

    Ok now the Slow Loris is one cute animal. I cant believe how many animals are still being poached. And orangutans small or big are so cute. Its something to do with the big dark eyes and crazy hair.

      Pleased you like the Slow Loris Lori!! In fact it is close to your name :) yes it is very very sad, animals are poached at alarming rates, throughout the world. I love orangutans too, they are known as "people of the forest"!! All the best! Jack

    One of the kids suggested you reminded him of Tom Holland...... Spider Man. Well I just know you have these adventures we all watch, that allow all of us to experience these critters, that we would never see in the fashion you present. Just the "production" we see of these vids, makes me wonder why you are not on Animal Planet...... Excellent vid once again, Sir.

    What an incredible opportunity that must have been to work on the front lines of conservation in Sumatra. That Slow Loris is absolutely adorable, and quite well behaved it seemed all things considered. The highlight for me is probably the orangutans though, getting to see wild Sumatran Orangutans is such an amazing privilege, and I’m really glad you got to experience it! Can’t wait for lots more from you Jack!

      Thank you guys! Yes, it's funny the Orangutans I agree, it is something you dream about your whole life, I know I show off a lot of reptiles, but actually I've always LOVED primates, especially Great Apes, they fascinate me so much. Me as an 8 year old in that moment would have been so so excited. Glad you enjoyed it as well, hope you are keeping well. All the best, Jack

    Loris is a very small and cute animal of course . I watched your series OUT THERE where my favourite episode was kangaroo mob . Lemur, Possum and Loris look almost same . Their eyes make them very special . They are venomous but they do not attack mostly on humans.
    Thanks.

    • @MadeintheWild
      @MadeintheWild  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They aren't too rare, but declining in populations, and seeing them in the wild is a real treat. Something that doesn't happen too often. They are cool animals aren't they!
