My first time at AXPONA The MOFI 888 was my favorite ( for a reasonable price ) I heard Andrew Jones explain the speaker before playing anything. After the demo, everyone was impressed in the room. I was looking forward to all the TH-cam reviews.
Heard these at Axpona. They were driven by a HiFi Rose Integrated. Excellent imaging. Top end was detailed yet non fatiguing. Bottom end was extended and articulate. Easily the best $5000 speaker of the show. Might be the best speaker at this price on the market. It does everything well. This is a great review and outline of an outstanding product.
We met Andrew Jones last month at “The Show”. I loved the TAD speakers, and I couldn’t have been more impressed with the price point of the MoFi after listening to Tool reference levels. It was a seriously impressive speaker for less than $3000. It pretty much blew my mind.
Adrian, thanks for yet another great review. You are one of the few reviewers who understand that height reproduction is an important part of the audio experience.
Excellent review - in particular your description of the "sound" is very thorough and descriptive! This is the first review of a speaker that makes me consider upgrading my Tannoy Revolution XT-8F's. And I love my speakers. Also, because of my Tannoy's I'm a big fan of concentric drivers, like these with the midrange driver and tweeter. It's a great design for clarity in the imaging. Thanks! Edit: Oops, I didn't wait for the sound differential on different amps. Mine is already "warm" and might get that "too much of a good thing".
I bought that album from Keith almost five decades ago, played it twice , first to listen , second to record it on tape to preserve the album, this was like no other piano music and will stand out for ever ! Cartridge at that moment was a Shure V15III.....Taperecorder a B77 mkII.......Maxell. Most off his albums were edited by ECM.
Nice review. I heard these at Axpona and they were by far my favorites of the reasonably priced speakers. Now all the reviews are confirming what my ears heard. They might be slightly large for my space, but my space is larger than the room I heard them in so I ordered a pair and they arrive Friday. I just hope my 100 watt Rogue Audio amp can do them justice.
I have a pair of Pioneer SP-BS22-LR speakers in my office. These were $100 speaker. For the cost, they are amazing. Covid killed off these speakers, so they aren't really available anymore new. I wouldn't recommend them for large spaces but in a small room like an office they are excellent. If you have good electronics they're great. Need some bass, so a subwoofer is needed. I paired with Polk Audio PSW10. Good stuff if you've upgraded you main an want to repurpose the gear for another room. As it goes, you can't buy them today in the used market for less than they sold new. As an engineer Jones is amazing. He get the job done within reasonable contraints. These are supposed to be rear speaker in home theater, but they work well as mains, they're crazy good for budget speakers.
Hi Adrian. Great first impressions. I've been hoping these lived up to all the show hype and based on the reviews so far it appears Andrew has hit not only a home run but a grand slam! SourcePoint 888 likely my next speaker. They tick all the right boxes for me. I would be interested if you compared them in the next video to the SF Sonetto V G2 which would seem an obvious competitor. If I still lived North of the border you would definitely be my dealer! I actually will be back in your neck of the woods in a couple of weeks up in North Bay. Keep dub dub and trip trippin' at Timmies.
Adrian - Great video - Thanks - I recently saw a video of Keith Jarrett post his 2 strokes - He can only play with one hand now, very unfortunate but between Bill Evans and him, best "touch" on the piano ever!
Hi Adrian, Once again a superbly done performance. I was glued to your lips and enjoyed the background stories of Andrew Jones and Keith Jarrett, thank you very much. Have you also connected the Maria 350 amp I have to the Sourcepoint 888, does it harmonize? What would you say if the speakers are only 60 cm from the front wall? Thanks again for your excellent presentation and I'm already looking forward to more. Greetings from France, Frank
Hi Frank, I haven't had the chance to connect the Maria to the 888 but if I had to guess, the combination should be outstanding, since the Maria is very neutral with fantastic power and control. Re the distance, it's really hard to say as each room's acoustics is different. However, as the speakers are capable of bass power and extension, I would be careful not to place them too close
Good design makes for a great speaker and this speaker proves that, not over built box, no over-the-top design to justify $$$$$ and up cost for a speaker and in most rooms these speakers would be all one would need to playback music. Crossover parts mean little, even when you use cheaper parts but you design the crossover correct that is what matters. This is a speaker for us who value good music, good reproduction at a sane price.
I hated that the stone on the top section (tweeter and midrange) did not match the stone on the bottom part). For something that expensive, I though it looked terrible. Better to use quartz if can't find matching granite.
Many people unfamiliar with Jarrett probably don't know that his solo piano concerts were improvisations. I first heard what I believe is Jarrett's first recording about 1972-73 when my university radio station played his album "Facing You" in it entirety without interruption (except for a brief time needed for the DJ to flip the record over). I was mesmerized when I heard it. The university radio station had a FM mono tube radio transmitter and in those days FM stereo had a lot more distortion than FM mono, and that mono FM tube radio station transmitter was amazing. I purchased a lot of Jarrett's records, and later most of his CD's, and now have access to all his ECM works on Tidal. I also have three of his classical works on CD's, since I am also a Bach and Baroque fan.
How strange, I just got the Koln concert, heard for the first time, last week. Needless to say, I was moved by it. Just purchased the sun bear concerts after hearing koln concert, coming soon. I have been listening to it on my xduoo ta-22 headphone amp with sennhieser 660s2 headphones I purchased at the same time. Just an amazing experience.
@Mark-rw3kw Unfortunately, I live in rural America where I don't get streaming. So I buy cds (and dvds) The cable companies are not going to wire a few homes in the middle of nowhere, just not profitable, and satellite is expensive and unreliable. But, on the plus side, I can play my music as loud as I want and not disturb my neighbors a half mile away.
Adrian, another cool video. Great job. I bought the source point 10s when they came out. I was all jazzed to get Andrew Jones’ latest design. I ended up moving them on to a new home. I have come to realize in my speaker journey I gravitate towards very high efficiency speakers. Unlike you, I like horns. I don’t want them to be horny, but I do love the dynamics. It’s a hard habit to kick. Peace ✌️
Thanks. I probably won't get to use the Accuphase E4000 with the MoFi, as the Accuphase is substantially more expensive than the speakers, and it would not be a natural combination. However, based on each product's character, I have no doubt Accuphase would be a lovely combination
So as currently interested maybe in the future but sitting here with plenty of speakers right now, I will say this. I wish he had added a couple hundred dollars more to the build budget on a monster tweeter to get that air, the cherry on top, and be totally perfect.
@adrianlow2114 obviously yes. Something with the underhung motor design. He could have made the tweeters "berylium" and charged an extra $500 to $1000.
the problem with audio reviews on youtube is that EVERYTHING gets a great review ,,,,,, when was the last time you saw a video from any of these reviewers and they said " after a careful audition I have come to the conclusion that these speakers are absolute crap " ?
Why would they wast their time on making such video? Or you could do your own reviewing most of these companies have a really good return policy. They are just telling you what they hear, their impressions.
yes - but reviewers would find themselves not getting any gear to review if they did that...what i'd like to see is reviewers framing the speaker into a picture of who would like the speaker and who would not. And always putting forward who would not like the speaker...cause no speaker pleases everybody. There are always tradeoffs and voicing opinions. Like saying 'the speaker doesn't have the heft to play orchestral works' or how about "these speakers won't get you the double bass in your favorite jazz trio's"? Even monitors differ substantially in how loud they go before they distort or just give up to. How about adding that to the review? Or here is another example: "While these Wilson Alexa's will bring home the bacon if you want to believe you are in row 12 at symphony hall a substantial portion of the cost is in the eye jewelry and stellar reputation of the company. If the quality of the sound is your only priority you can get that for 1/2 to 1/3 the cost...for example brand x over here..." lol ))
For the most part, if a reviewer doesn't like a product, they will just send the product back and not film a review. It's easy to understand why. They don't want to sour their relationship with that specific manufacturer. And if other manufacturers see that you trash a product online, that would lessen the chances of receiving gear from them for review. It's not reasonable to expect these TH-cam reviewers to buy gear with their own money just to review them. They rely on manufacturers to send them gear. Audio Excellence gave a lukewarm review to the Buchardt S400 MKII as mentioned above because they are a retailer and Buchardt sells direct to consumer so Adrian and co. don't lose anything if they give them a bad review.
I own the F200 and want to try the 888's in the near future. I find the F200 I bit toO bright (for my likings at least). Have not tried but I don't see why it wouldn't work well. BHK amps have wonderful and spacious soundstage, which will complement the 888. Very airy up top which will help with my impression/ wish that the highs were more "spacious".
Boys and girls, as Adrian would say, we are not asking the most important question! He wasn't a client, just very persistent and insistent that I see and hear his speakers. I was honest in my feedback, but not brutal by any means. After all, I used to make my own speakers and I know the emotional attachment of your own creations. It's funny re watches, I had stopped wearing watches for over a decade. Too much physical activity in my job, and almost damaged 2 of my watches, so I stopped. But after I bought the MAD 1, I fell back into this insanity ... lol
@@adrianlow2114 at least you wear and enjoy them, and that’s important. These days, the watch I wear the most on the daily is really the Apple Watch. 😂
I like how my Monitor Audio speakers have both a front and rear port so you get to choose which one you block off. I get cleaner bass by using the front port so speakers like the 888 would likely be less clean than what I have.
Usually the cure for that is move the speaker around and experiment with different distances away from the rear or side wall. Some speakers offer port plugs, which means a subwoofer might be needed to achieve low bass.
When you are giving your talk it would be nice if you could have one of them showing over your shoulder instead of a multi thousands of dollar speaker.
Most people cannot afford the equipment, so just about all TH-cam audiophile reviewers these days mention the recordings they use to draw some in some viewers. Almost all of the audiophile print magazines had extensive discussions and rankings of recordings, especially well-recorded ones.
If the rrp is $5000 then the distributor probably paid around $2500 for it. $2500 is the margin split between the distributor and the retailer. The manufacturer sells it for $2500 of which maybe $1000 is profit and the speaker actually cost $1500 to make. Tell me I'm wrong.
I think the general rule of thumb in business is to sell it to the distributor for double your manufacturing cost. If true that'd be 1,250 in this case. Not knocking the speaker that's how it goes with dealer distributed product.
@@tbirdsteve1 When I was was working in the business part time while in college years ago, retail dealer cost was 60% of MSRP. But I can’t say for sure that is the norm today and it may depend on the brand. For the manufacturer, just like the retailer, gross margin is not the net profit of the business, since there are a multitude of expenses besides cost of goods sold.
@@bearclaw5115 agreed, my point being that buying a $5k rrp speaker in reality is only getting you $1200 - $1500 worth of product. Not a great deal in my book and certainly not value for money.
for 5 k you still need to upgrade the x over parts... just saying. the markups in this hobby are brutal. going to stick w my lrs plus for now for 1/5 the cost.
@@Harrisongrey19 Huh? No…I wouldn’t expect an unbiased review from the manufacturer! Any more than I’d expect an unbiased review from the salesmen for the product!
You don't need to rely on this review. Watch Erin's Audio Corner's review of the SP888. He used a $100k Klippel NFS to measure them and he says that overall this is the best speaker $5k and under that he has had in for review based on objective data. It has a neutral frequency response, good horizontal and vertical directivity, goes down to 30 Hz in room, and vanishingly low distortion figures. What else could you want in a speaker? Unless you don't like the appearance or something.
These are equipped with the cheapest filter components on the market. But sadly, this is 'normal' in this price category, not unusual. So if you want better, you can upgrade the parts. See all the work from Gr research..
You're likely correct. It's amazing AJ gets such good results from cheap parts! Danny's video on the SP8's was eye opening. For the price they should do better. More than likely the top end extension of the speaker would be improved.
TAD evolution line of speaker cabinet/stands are made in China too, which makes no sense at the price they charge for them. Their new GE1 costs $65,000 too.

Its not called audio reviewing.its actually audio influencing. The new market stratergy. 😮
Is it many times detrimental to their supposed intended victims?
Steve McCormack of McCormack electronics has a set of SP10s which he is gonna send GR research for possible upgrades
Until you mentioned the tweeter, I started to worry that maybe I shouldn’t have bought my focal kantas
Congrats!
@@adrianlow2114 love your videos
Hoping that client is not watching
You need to Jack up recording volume level, watching through a tablet I can barely hear you.
Buy a computer
Just listen to Keith Jarrett solo live album, your music choice. Not a fan for showing off the abilities of a speaker.
Since when have big speakers been bad?!!! 😂 Just kidding, nice review.
Thanks!!
Is this a speaker review or an album review?
That's how business works do you think a $5000 speaker costs $4500 to make learn basic business 101
@@misterzero8667 well duh champ, thanks for your expertise. At least you passed 2nd grade.
How many times a day do you get on your knees and worship Danny Richie?
Annoying low rumble. Your mixer should be set to roll off the microphone below 150 cycle.
I think it was the A/C
To be honest, when I’m looking for unbiassed opinions I don’t look to reviews from the dealer who sells the product.
So if mofi it’s self came out with a review you would feel better? Don’t you think they would have some bias?
@@Harrisongrey19
Huh?
Because China very often has first rate manufacturing.
@@jrdavisphd why would you even mention that? What is the context? No one mentioned China as far as I can see.
Ok, are they made in CCP?
You talk like somebody is sleeping in the room next to you 😅
Zzzzzzzzzzzzz…..
Made In China.
Same as my iPhone
@@quma001 I don't buy crapple products. My SONY phone is made in Thailand.
@@mugen2002 well, well...
Get over it princess.
No, it is made in CCP.
Why is it made in China?😢
MoFi wants better profits.
TAD evolution line of speaker cabinet/stands are made in China too, which makes no sense at the price they charge for them. Their new GE1 costs $65,000 too.
No, it is made in CCP.
Most speakers are and these days that is no bad thing. If they were made in a western country you couldn't afford them (a lot less people that is).
Because it would cost 15000 otherwise
I try to watch good reviews as much a possible. The time it took you to get the the meat on the bone took way to long.
