This brings back memories. My father was the signal maintainer for Southern Railway in Newport in the 1960s and had his shop in the depot. I attended Newport Gramar School beginning in second grade and finishing seventh grade before our family returned to Marion, NC. I now appreciate what an excellent early education I got there.
