- Thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved. Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns. Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan)-who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London-finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future.
Mortal Engines is the startling, new epic adventure directed by Oscar®-winning visual-effects artist Christian Rivers (King Kong). Joining Rivers are The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies three-time Academy Award®-winning filmmakers Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who have penned the screenplay. The Universal and MRC adaptation is from the award-winning book series by Philip Reeve, published in 2001 by Scholastic.
On board as producers are Zane Weiner (The Hobbit trilogy), Amanda Walker (The Hobbit trilogy) and Deborah Forte (Goosebumps), as well as Walsh and Jackson. Ken Kamins (The Hobbit trilogy) joins Boyens as executive producer. Universal will distribute the film worldwide. www.mortalengines.com

It's really more about paths intertwining leading to a "save", the world isn't at risk from some bad evil here. Just different philosophis about the way of life.
Since I don't want to spoil I will leave it at that I guess. Why so ever they do this in the film is beyond me. Guess the times call for more independant strong female lead characters.

Book: "A terrible scar ran down her face from forehead to jaw...Her mouth was wrenched sideways in a permanent sneer, her nose was a smashed stump and her single eye stared at him out of the wreckage..." Movie: Eh, draw a couple lines across her cheek and chin. #NotMyHester
A H C to cast a main female lead with that description you would have to make a Rated R. They want to make money with this and attract as many audience as they can. Rated R films are always a risk in terms of investment, thats why they tone the scar down to PG13 kinda soft.
Ezequiel Agostinho That makes absolutely no sense. Monetary goals, sure. America is all about superficial beauty, sex sells, yada, yada, yada, but too many f-bombs, smoking, drugs, extreme violence... that's what will bump a movie up to an R rating. A scar though? I'm not saying her face should be falling off in pieces horror movie style. My point was Hester is a hard girl who has suffered a hard life because she was a victim of someone's greed, and she is far more than what was done to her. Covering one eye was the least homage the movie could've offered in tribute to a such a complicated, well-written protagonist. Then again, maybe the message is that America's youth can't handle such a "adult" ideas of personal worth and should continue to only focus on perfection in their formative years. I'm sure that'll continue to work out well. Seriously though, I get why they choose pretty because pretty sells, but if a half blind girl would really make a rating go up to an R... wow. That's just sad.

Goddamn Valentinists.
Voila! In view humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin, vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that its my very good honour to meet you
and you may call me V.

Absolutely incredible

HESTER IS MEANT TO LOOK HIDEOUS.
The scar is meant to literally split her face, it’s the defining aspect of her character in the book, that she looks nothing like a typical hero.
I’m scared that making her much better looking is emblematic of the movie not embracing the darkness of the book that grounded the insane world.
Ugly heroes don't resonate with audiences well. Even deadpool got a makeover.
Honestly there are so many things about this trailer that just tell me peter Jackson's going to slaughter mortal engines just like he did the hobbit
Tragic, isn't it? I thought that the world was becoming progressive, but Hester looks like Katniss got scratched up.
How can you butcher a character this bad? A massive part of the books was that her face is fucked up and she is fucked up and her life is fucked up and the world is fucked up and... Christ, they got nothing right.
I agree, even with that scar, she still looks too perfect compare to her book counterpart.
OriginalRAB l completely understand why they did it, it just aggravates me because judging from this decision, this character won’t be anywhere near as complex or compelling as she is in the books.
Also, SPOILERS if you don’t know the story.
The whole point is you’re not supposed to like Hester, you’re meant to like Tom and then get to know her as he does.
The scar is also what makes their romance fresh and surprising, because generally YA fiction (ESPECIALLY the movies) only gives romances to super models.
Now because both the protagonists are attractive it really won’t surprise an audience working on Hollywood logic when they hook up.
The whole trailer just seems a little too ‘safe’ for me.
Visuals looks great, story looks weak and generic. I've learned from watching Bayformers that strong cgi does not make up for a lack of plot.
Trust me the story of the book is soo good
For me it does. Its like a moving painting. Paintings dont have plots but they are loved by many xd

@Playfulpanthress Ok my bad. Some paintings do have a story. But its not why most of the people like them. Im an artist to and my paintings don't have a story behind some of my artworks.

Haha lol
Edward Drawde isn't it Lodonistan
john aribam I don’t think I can afford to care; call London whatever you please, it’s still destroying itself from the inside-out
LionsAllday DETROIT I have. And yeah, America is in a bad place, America also isn’t leaving the one thing that actually is keeping that land in check. I mean seriously; London is either going to look like it does in the trailer, or some weird mix of Fallout and Dead By Daylight. Truth be told, parts of it already does (Peckham.)
LionsAllday DETROIT a very solid argument. Sorry for not considering the problems America might be facing. But do consider the fact that London once had a war with America (which originally started out as like England #2. Or I’ve mixed up two different parts of history.) and then had a War with ITSELF. If any land would become a “destroy or be destroyed” situation, it’s London; either in this film or in real life. Then again, America isn’t doing too great, sorry about your country’s current state.
I bet you still have to register your *butter knife*

This is disappointing, the female main character, Hester Shaw suffered a sword blow to the face, which wrecks her eye, and leaves a scar from ‘forehead to jaw’ and her nose a ‘smashed stump’. Her face is generally referred to as a wreck throughout the book.
Looks like she has two fine eyes and everything is below the cheekbone. Why? Why not make it bad? The point of Tom and Hester’s relationship is that it isn’t based on aesthetics.
But Hollywood is physically incapable of producing a movie with a female lead that couldn't easily win a beauty pageant.
Point of making her more attractive, plus younger kids(5-10) are generally repulsed or scared by injuries like that, and they probably want to keep that demographic.

I actually loved this movie. So I really wished there was a movie for every book but no one liked it and it's such a shame cause I loved it.
This 'Let's make an entire trailer dialogue out of tired old cliches' -strategy didn't do any favors for Solo and it isn't working any better here. You have an awesome premise with mobile cities hunting each other. Somehow your marketing team managed to turn that into something seemingly tiresome and old in 2 minutes 30 seconds flat.

Willy Wonka Writing is horrible these days. Artists are not exposed to enough of the world to get authentic inspiration. Sounds like a hipster who think he/she is worldly and creative wrote it. There's no authentic feeling to it in terms of art, sounds like work rather than art.

"We have to stop London" is probably the most accurate line in the world
I have been living in London for four years. I have to say that I agree with your statement.
Do you think it reflects the author's view as well as the producers of the film (said to be USA and New Zealand) ?
Especially when considering the MED-USA part...

We have to stop BREXIT 😆
@Alex Thistle they would never get away with, "We have to stop Israel." Nobody can speak ill of the Zionist Jews can they.
Wtf this trailer?
It's just the whole film in a nutshell.
I hate when trailers do this. However I've read the book this film is based on and at least with this story a big part of the joy comes from seeing and exploring its world so arguably you've yet to see the best. There's a hella cool minor character who doesn't even appear in this trailer. Just saying so you know the film hasn't been totally spoilt for you but yeah I despise trailers like this that show way too much.
Daniel García de la Torre Fe inrnández
The setting is more fit for a game then a movie.
Seriously, mobile cities consuming other mobile cities to get bigger and stronger, it's like a military sims, first one to be a country win.
read the books - they’re great, and you’ll see that there’s a lot more to the story than what’s in this trailer
I watched this trailer and said to myself "That's a bit spoilery, innit?"
They have beauty-washed the main character. As a hideous person, I am outraged and demand representation.
That's just cuz you're only hideous on the inside
@@jaydee1024 That's a bit ironic coming from you isn't it.
@@maarten9272 what do mean only a little? 🤬😡🤬😡
yes they have, women got to be
You're totally right. It's super sad. :(
London: "please mind the gap"
A very short movie, no bullshit, only 2:36
It's made for the young people. Those, whachamacall'em, zapper-generations. Always living on the edge and never time for depth or gravitas.
This was the extended directors cut. :-)
We want more Tolkien stories!!!
Why they revealed whole movies in the trailer, cuze i dont wanna watch it.
Thank God!! lol
It looks like a great movie but the trailer dialog is so repetitive and I have heard this a million times in other movies, it looks like a fun movie though :)
If a 6 year old could make movies. Let me guess:
* Evil villain has/develops world-ending weapon: A. Death Star B. Ring to Rule Them All C. Infinity Gems, etc., so forth, blah, blah, blah...
* Hero seeks revenge because evil villain killed: A. Brother B. Sister C. Father D. Mother E. Whole Family F. Cat and/or Dog G. Whole Planet
* Hero gets butt kicked in Scene 1, Act 1 and must...
* Go on quest where he/she/it is saved by/must organize a rag tag group of: A. Rebels B. Outcasts C. Indigenous Peoples (Avatar) D. Resistance Fighters etc, so on, so forth, blah, blah, blah...
* Hero strikes back, against all odds and, just when villain looks like he/she/it has won, spunky rag tag Hero (et al.) manages to triumph against all odds....
* But somebody everybody loves has to die because, you know, deep/meaningful.
* Becuase victory is always bitter/sweet.
* Set story in A.) Dystopic World B.) Post-Apocolyptic World C.) Fantasy World with CGI and Puppets & Big Snowy Mountains D.) Infinite Universe where somehow Earth is nevertheless THE most important place and New York City/London are somehow THE cities to attack in an infinite Universe (unless you are Godzilla in which case [insert model Japanese city here] E.) Deserts and treeless vistas because wheels, because Mad Max, because treads, because Mad Max with cities on them... F. so on, so forth, blah, blah, blah....

The book is exceptional
Nope

great book, a little on the "well, that's a bit of a coincidence" side, but still great

_The wheels on London go round and round~_
Great! I just saw the entire movie in this trailer! Evil guy finds / has doomsdayweapon that the protagonist try to keep from him, he gets it anyway, with much grief to done to the protagonist to really loathe him and the protagonist save the day in the nick of time, but not before we have witnessed its destructive power as it blows up Aldreaan.
i only came here bc of robert sheehan i didnt know this film was so dope and gave me so much emotions
*Hugs*
This movie was forgotten before it even came out
Coming this winter:
*"Motor Home Wars"*

Just watched it and I must to say, just don’t listen to the comments, the movie is very enjoyable and don’t rewatch the trailer it spoils to much
There's a trailer for this movie?
yeah I wanna watch this but I'm going to have to wait half a year to forget everything I've just seen.
Yeah, I just re-watched this trailer, and was shocked at how much it spoiled the story! D:
Where's the suspense when you know when, how, and who is gonna get saved!?
I get a vibe that this might actually be a good movie despite a horrendous trailer. Marketing is everything, I’ve seen some awful trailers for great movies and great trailers for awful movies.
I agree with you, the trailer is a bit dodgy, and the dialogue you hear is not given with any context. But, it could still be a good movie. I am sure that more trailers will come - hopefully the next one/s will be better.
This movie was in my pandemic quarantaine movie list. IT was giving me VERY MUCH Final Fantasy 9 vibes. Great
Every single piece of dialogue in this trailer feels like it was fished out of the Generic Action Movie Script barrel. Unique and beautiful visuals can’t elevate boring writing, and this looks awful.
Sadly, I agree.
The writing in the book seemed to be better writin.
TheColorUrple uh Pacific rim?
having read the books, i am sad to say that this does not look like it will be very good. from reading other comments, you probably know that hester does not look like what the book describes, and there is no possible way to fit everything (even just from the first book) into one movie. without all the background information and the development of the characters from the book, this will be terrible. another thing i am dissapointed in is how advanced London looks. in the books, the technology was not very advanced, in fact in some of the later books the first real airplanes with only wings and propellers are seen. all the other airships had gas to lift them. Yet London looks like it was made in modern day not to mention every single window is clean lol. this place has been running for hundreds of years yet i see very little wear and tear on it. anyways, im done rambling. great books, i do recommend them.
in the books at the start, doesn't it describe london being on it's last legs, battered and running from larger citys like newcastle
William Godsey When I think of the landscape in Mortal Engines, I imagine an absolute wasteland, not some grass with a few tracks in it and the cities move way to fast from what I can see.
@@alexanderthegreat445 in the book it stated all that was left was muddy waterfilled track marks. but then again in the book the channel dried up, but there are are lakes later on.
Yes later on but you would think a land that is constantly being run over and then polluted with smoke would have very little wildlife.
@@alexanderthegreat445 in the book, the first City London captures going into the hunting grounds was said to be traveling at 80 miles an hour, and London was gaining on it. There are other cities faster than London, and at least one smaller town said to be capable of over 100 miles an hour
Yeah...show the movie with twists and everything in a 2 min trailer..good job fellas...you saved me from watching this movie 😆😆😆😆
lol I'm gonna guess you haven't read the book
Leroy so i need to read a book to enjoy a movie ???.....that's a failure on the filmmaker's side 😂😂😂
oh no, that's not what I meant. I was referring to what you think are "twists" in the trailer. All though reading the book would probably help with the enjoyment for sure.
A lot happens in the book, and most of what is shown here takes place early on in it.
nothing twists in this trailer
Never thought I'd see a high-speed chase between a town and a city.
Cool concept but I just know this is going to be the next Jupiter ascending or the next Valerian
I know exactly what Hester would say:
"Gods, is that bimbo supposed to be me?"
Na seriously I hope this goes well, it looks different to the books (in particular no proper airships) but damn, the Jenny looks great, and Anna Fang looks baddass, so I am well excited.
EXCEPT WHERE IS SHRIKEY
My thoughts exactly... I feel a little betrayed for Hester, but Anna Fang 😍and the Jenny...
But I was waiting with baited breath for Shrike... and was thoroughly disappointed!!
But am also well excited, I LOVED these books as a kid!!
I'll bet Shrike will appear in the post credits as a sequel beg, I could be wrong though
My one problem is it looks like they made the Jenny Haniver not be you classic airship.
Trust me... shrike will be there. And it will be a big deal
They have to save some plot point reveals for the film, plus there may be another trailer in the works
LOOKS GREAT, BUT THE PROBLEM WITH HOLLYWOOD IS THE TRAILERS SHOW WAY TO MUCH NOW!!!!
I’ve read the book, and trust me when I say that this doesn’t actually show much at all.
EIGHTIES BIT - How could you possibly know that?
Well they can lie to you in the trailers to. Look how much marvel hid in the Infinity War trailers.
Sure, they may show 2 mins of footage from a 2 hours film but you still don't know the fully fleshed out back story for each character and the motives behind why everything is happening.
that's why i alway stop trailers at 50% You can always have an idea in the 1st half and the spoilers in the trailers is always in the 2nd half xD .
