- A fair use experiment that brings together all scenes with this amazing character in a way that tells his story. Had Mortal Engines been about Shrike and Hester's journey, it could have been a fantastic dramatic film about humanity in all things even when not human.

I created another short. "Robert Fischer: An Inception Short." I reworked the film's footage to focus on Robert's story so that without Inception's context, it becomes an emotional journey of reconciliation and closure with his father through his dreams.
Try as I might, the copyright holders refused to let me post it on TH-cam even though it falls under these Fair Use factors:
1. "Transformative." The video adds a new expression or meaning to the original. It is a non-commercial use.
2. It does not harm the copyright owner's ability to profit from his or her original work.

Incredible to think that a CGI character with an sfx voice carried more depth, nuance and emotion than the rest of the cast put together.

That's not a sfx voice. That's Stephen Lang's voice. He also did the motion capture.

I love the nod to the the final scene in the books where Shrike sits alone on a mountain top and goes in to power saver mode, only waking himself up when he notices a little girl putting flowers around his neck.

He was a father and an archaeologist before he got turned into a Stalker.
Notice how as he's dying his face takes on such a gentle look while he gives her the necklace, and that soft smile when he "releases" her. Despite his being about to die alone, he's just so relieved to see Hester have a reason to live as a human; it hurt him to see her suffer. His character carried so much depth, it's a shame he didn't appear more.
If you want more Shrike, you should read the Mortal Engines books. You learn more about Shrike and it's incredible, he's a brilliant character.

Shrike is one of the coolest fictional characters I have ever seen depicted in ANYTHING... EVER. His plot alone carried this movie and made it way better.

Shrike, despite being deemed a villain or anti-hero, is such a lovable character. (And was honestly the best part of the movie.) He deserved better. He was just lonely and wanted her to stay. He cared about her to the point that he wanted to take the pain away, even if it meant he had to kill her to erase her memories.
He's not a villian nor an anti-hero. Story-wise he's an antagonist.
Read the books and you will thank me

Shrike passes through several roles, just like most of the characters. Antagonist, antivillain, ally, sort of protagonist, narrator.
The part when he staring at the doll with the red hat almost makes me cry. You can see him trying so hard to remember his family there. Even in his eyes, which i think are real human eyes you can see his emotions are not all gone yet. TBH, I liked the movie, was it rushed, 100% they should have made a series and followed the books.

Thing was that he was once a man, so the fact that he had a partial imprint is greater proves the existence of humanity beyond the simple corporeal form.

@@TheAngryIntellect- Well remember, he wasn't human anymore. He was rebuilt to feel no pain emotion and remorse. He was built to complete his mission. At some point something triggered a reemerging of a fragmant of who he once was. Some echo of the Man and father behind the reprogramming. She somehow became his mission. And despite the programming and God knows what they did to remake him, somehow she gets through to the echo still in there behind the wires and circuits. I would say whoever Shrike was before he died, must have been a helluva a good man. He might not have earned redemption, but maybe he earns some pity. In a very real way, Shrike is a victim.
When this short is much much better than the whole movie.
the whole movie was a delight. every single scene was fresh and connected like 3 different stories all together as it progressed.

I remember watching this movie with my mother, and she said about Shrike that although how monstrous the movie made him look, sound and behave, you can still fall in love with him.

People love sympathetic villians, and what's more sympathetic than one's ability to be a parent corrupted. In the end Shrike was a father who wanted to end his adopted daughter's pain. It's just that sense of fatherhood was corrupted by his programming to be a weapon that completes his mission no matter the cost.

The ending really got me... This movie would have been SO much better if this had been the MAIN story arc.
Shrike is simply a masterpiece of a character. One of my favorites ever.
Ironic in the books he outlasts them all and regains a good part of his humanity as it were.

I love the design and effects of shrike. He is like a cross between Nick valentine from fallout and a Necron from warhammer 40k.
I love seeing characters like him in fiction. Zombies and robots are 2 of my favourite things and putting them together to make a character like this threatening but sad is amazing to me. I could watch a entire move with a character like shrike as the hero.

Fun fact: in the book shrike didn't find her in the middle of nowhere, he found her in a trading town as an orphan.
She was passed out on a beach made of trash bleeding to death with a serious head injury, missing an eye, her nose and most of her lip.
Shrike is really the best part of a failed film, he have a cool and unique design, great voice performance, deep and tragic backstory. On the surface he looks really intimidating and creepy, but underneath those cold machine parts l see a man who is lost and only wanted to love and been love again.
Easily the best character, and he's the best part of the books as well.
He wanted to save her. One way or the other. Save her from pain. When people are in pain sometimes they wanna die. And thats why he wanted her to find a reason to live. When she did... He released her!
Maybe one of the best mini plots in all of the sci fi movies. I would love to see just a Shrike movie.

I love Shrike, like you can see the character depth in him. It's just amazing. I'm going to read the book for Mortal Engines so I'm excited to hear about him more in depth.

@Corey Pack I agree. For a debut, it was still impressive work with lots of good stuff scrambled around, but if Jackson directed it and he had a bigger budget, the movie would have been epic. You can see as you watch it the ingredients are all there.

concreteconnor the original series is a quartet so 4 but there is also the prequel trilogy which I’m currently reading as well as the short story book, the illustrated world book and the several short stories that were online(not sure if they still are). If you are Interested In buying it you can get a 8 book collection on amazon with all the books except the illustrated one. It’s a great series probably my favorite, the movie doesn’t do it justice

Even I pity the Necrons
The Necrons deserve pity. They always did. And when I learned about the Silent King's meeting with the Blood Angels, and how they made a truce to face the incoming Tyranids, it REALLY made me sad for them. Their humanity, for lack of a better word, is not fully gone. There is just enough for them to still be alive, and that makes their state all the more tragic.
I favor the Imperium over the rest, but some of the Xenos I see value in too. The Eldar and the Necrons, despite their age old hate of each other, could be the best allies humanity could have against the MUCH greater threats that are the Tyranids... and the twisted slaves of Chaos.

I'm not saying this as some sort of childish patting myself on the back sort of crap. But I like when people can see the hopeful possibilities instead of nothing but the grim dark grimmest darknessity of 40K.
I'd personally like to see the Chaos Marines and other slaves of Chaos freed too. I'm not saying they can be forgiven (some willingly chose to serve it and did horrific things, albiet without truly knowing since no one really sees just how bad Chaos is until they're too deep to get out) although some POSSIBLY could be. But they should be freed from Chaos even if it would kill them. The Rubric Marines are a perfect example of this.
Just like how no one deserves being eaten alive by Tyranids, NO ONE deserves to be part (aka a slave, since EVERYTHING "allied" to Chaos is a slave, without exception) of Chaos. The Triumverate you mentioned would be an ideal team up too. The Eldar never turn to Chaos because of She Who Thirsts already has a hold on their souls. So the Emepror could defend them spiritually in return for their help and experience training and protecting human psykers from falling to Chaos. And the Necrons could guard things like the broken human webway from the Daemons trying to push through because their tech and lack of souls given Chaos nothing to feed off, and in return the Imperium could help them "get their heart back" at least. Maybe even help them return in new cloned bodies that wouldn't automatically be gardens of cancer.
Anyway, the weaponry and abilities of all three together literally cover all areas, in multiple redundant ways, so there's no real weakness to use against the three by Chaos. And together they could bring back the Emperor. If he is perpetual they could deactivate the Golden Throne and "die". Then Humans and especially Eldar could use their advanced psychic ability to help bring him back together while he is reborn, while the Necron use their tech (like those pylons that were on Cadia) to keep out any Chaos tampering from an outside source. And on the off chance he isn't perpetual, the Ynnaeri could resurrect him while the Imperium, Eldar, and Necron all shield him during the process in multiple overreaching ways at the time. Either way, once He is awake and up again, He could save the Eldar and Necrons from their individual problems, and they can join in a greater and more or less invincible Imperium. Not just an Imperium of Man, but an Imperium of Life.
@@angelusumbra5741 Really the whole galaxy needs to put aside their problems and just hit the Tyranids with everything they've got, they're doomed if they don't. But we all know that has a 0% chance of happening.
Seeing something like this should be shocking and should be emotional. A machine, or at least partial machine, that cares enough about a child to not only save and protect them, but try to end their pain as well. Showing that humanity is not just a human trait, no matter how degraded it is. Shrike is a tragedy.
With the gravitas and power Shrike put on display without actively attempting to kill and destroy everyone in sight, just pursue one target, it is terrifying to imagine what whole regiments of resurrected men were capable of.
The prequels make this even sadder knowing the man he once was thousands of years of years before right when traction cities were just booting up. He never lost his care for children but forgot why he cared. Excellent character
What I have always loved about Science Fiction is that it allows us to explore philosophical questions that we simply can't explore in any other genre.
16:11 shows Shrike's eyes when he was alive, it's only for a second so you have to slow it down but wow...
The one character I loved in the entire book series. His ending made the books for me, turning them from "not too bad, considering" into "that was... AWESOME!" in just that last chapter alone.
Honestly the end of the books is probably the best ending to a series I've ever seen. So beautifully done.
I never watched the film: having read and adored the books when I was younger I realised I couldn't watch the film as soon as the reviews came out. Even so, they seem to have nailed Shrike at least. He looks and speaks as I imagined him, and they've done justice to his implacable search for Hester. It's unfortunate that they killed him off, as the books get a lot of drama out of the fact that he doesn't die. But at least it looks like they got his characterisation and appearance right.
The only plot in the whole movie that made sense and had a legit reason to exist! Hands-down the best character in the film with a perfect character arc, and a perfect subplot that conveyed the main theme and merged with the main plot of the movie

All this destruction, killing, and slaughtering he was trying to free her from the pain and suffering she felt. When he met her as a child he saw a sad and broken heart that he wanted to try and fix because he did not want her to end up like the broken toys he collected. And in his mind of his memory's he saw her as his own daughter. If any of you agree please respond and type back👍

To be honest she didn't have much of a choice. The city was burning and crashing down. If she had stayed or tried to carry him it most likely would've ended up with all 3 of them dead

Shrike indeed has a heart and she broke it.
But she gave him peace he never knew he wanted.
The film for me was a major disappointment for a number of reasons, one of those being Shrike (Who still is one of my all time favourite characters).
I think that this short comes far closer to how Shrike is portrayed in the books than how the film does. As it stands the film adaptation of the mortal engines series has gone the same way as the Percy Jackson films have, and bare only a passing resemblance to the original source material. Shrike in the books is a deeply complex and pivotal character in series, who not only directly and indirectly shapes the lives of almost all the main character also has a major affect on the events that shape the world throughout the whole saga. This short was an absolute pleasure to watch, and brought a measure of justice to Shrike.

Book Shrike is one of my favorite characters ever
Ok so let me get this straight. Orphan girl gets an adoptive cyborg-father. The fathers see's she is depressed and offers her a way out of human pain. She decides she wants to be an immortal cyborg like him. Last minute she bails and runs away, doesn't communicate or explain anything to him. He is now trying to find her. Instead of having a conversation with her father, she runs, hides, and has acquaintances violently attack him. In the end, she runs away to an enormous steam-punk sky-city. The entire sky city and hundreds/thousands of inhabitants burn to the ground and die, just because she was having communication problems with her father?
Like the second she actually talks to him, it's settled very quickly. Her idea to address a change of heart in decision she made wither cyborg dad has handled with irrational violence, endangerment of them both, and constant avoidance, instead of the normal approaching - talking. So this girl's batshit insane response caused untold amounts of destruction, injuries, deaths, and a city to literally explode.
I'm sorry, but this story makes her out to be a real piece of work.

Mortal Engines is honestly one of my favorite movies, providing a near perfect picture of the books. Wish there was a sequel. Definitely quite the turn though, goes from terrifying cyborg bringing the whole place down in flsmes to making you cry over his fall.
I don't care what anyone says, the world of Mortal Engines was awesome!

Though I actually enjoyed the movie, Shrike really made it as good as it was. His last scene made me actually cry, which was a surprise.
I was one of the few who had seen this movie in theaters, and the part when Shrike discovers his lost childhood had made me cry.
I think that might have been Shrike as a father. Several scenes to back up that conclusion. He takes in the Ester. That scene where he's staring at the doll's face as Ester says, "I think he had a family." All points to Shrike being a father in a former life. But, I could be wrong. Feel free to correct me if I am.

@@mostirrational Kit Solent is featured heavily in the original Mortal Engines Quartet as the infamous stalker, Shrike. Before his transformation, Solent was an archaeologist living in London and a caring father of two children. Fascinating.

I actually enjoyed this movie. It has outstanding special effects, good scenery and fun action despite its flaws. Furthermore I loved Shrike and his story and I hoped it would be longer. My favorite character in the movie!
If you enjoyed it, highly recommend reading the books. There's the 4 Mortal Engines books, the prequel trilogy Fever Crumb, and a couple shorter stories. You get more of Shrike in the books, and he's amazing.

He wasn´t really evil, just a broken man, trying to make her pain go away in a way he knew how...
I mean Shrike was pretty bad for a while. He killed a lot of people, that's basically all he did for centuries before finding Hester, wandering and killing, but Hester was the start of bringing back the humanity he had lost so long ago.
Shriker had a war within him, and he was victorious.
Who wouldnt Want shrike as a father.......so protective and a true warrior giving his last Strength and letting His Adopted daughter GO.A champion indeed

Shrike did genuinely care about Hester and he makes it known that he didn’t want to see her sad or hurt, once he knew she’d be safe with Tom he knew that she’d be happy with Tom.
Shrike was easily and unquestionably the most compelling character in this turdfest of a movie.

Steven Lang/Shrike had 16:37 minutes in this film and it was the best part of the entire movie. In the end, the re-animated man re-found his humanity.

Welp now i cant stop thinking about a movie with a necron with an adoptive child, that wants to transform her like him, since she is always sad after the death of her parents. It would be highly heretical but a emotional piece indeed.

13:14 The emotion in his voice when he says “you are crying… he huRT YOU!” Though I feel she should have said in response “YOU are hurting me!” and have him come to the realization then. I haven’t seen the movie, but I feel that Shrike seeing her love for Tom is a little cheap. This moment, I feel, is more about Shrike and Hester’s love than it is about Hester and Tom’s love. Love of a parental figure and a child. For me it cheapens the moment a little because I don’t feel like it’s focused on Shrike and Hester’s relationship as much as it should be. He can still realize she has found a reason to live in Tom, but having him realize that he is hurting someone he cares about(even though, up until this point, he has believed that he has no heart) and then stopping, only to die from his injuries, would have made it feel more heartbreaking to me. It’s still a good scene but it could have been just that little bit better in my eyes.
The cities and the shrike reminded me so much of Bioshock games
Why couldn't this literally be the subject of the entire movie? This was... wow. That hurt, but in a good way.
Honestly watching this movie felt like watching Return of the King before watching The Fellowship of the Ring. Its got a decent story and amazing theatrics, its just that theres too much backstory and too many characters that have been shoved into a single film

Imagine how cool a live action of the iron giant would be!!!

@@mindatrest6838 I've read most of Fall of Hyperion... I liked it, but the story became kind of stagnant and super dragged out, if you know what I mean? Almost as if the author was just kinda' adding in unnecessary descriptions and events just to fluff up and add length to the chapters. Idk, maybe it's just me and my mind-set when I last read it. Would I enjoy it more so do you think if I started from the first book?
@@entombedmachine1518 yes Hyperion cantos is the first book, the first two books are best.... It's all about visual prowess.... when I read I take my time to visualize the imagery in the scenes.... Also speed read or skip the unnecessary stuff.... But I can tell you these books have a lot of fan following.... Some even rank it next to Dune in top sci-fi books of all time....

OH MY GOD, this really hits hard doesn't it? I want to know who CREATED Shrike, the technology that allows someone to live beyond their physical death to be explained... And to know if there are others out there like Him.
Reeve had explained in his prequel series just how Shrike had come to be. I won't give any spoilers, but it left me speechless.

corvo attano SPOILERS AHEAD.............. Shrike was a character named kit Solent before he died after a long story to long to explain here, he had a family one daughter and one son who’s mother died some time before. Kit was helping the main character Fever when he died but was brought back as a cyborg by a person named wavey godshawk who has her own story, she learned how to build these machines by studying them. The series is brief about them but they may have been created before or after the apocalyptic event but they are ancient, the knowledge to create them has been recycled but it’s basically just replacing organs with machines and the brain with a special type of brain some better than others, shrike got one from a special temple ruin from long dead people who were stalker pros if I’m not mistaken. That is why he has emotions.

It also didn't help that she promised him to let him end her life so she could become like him. He took that promise seriously. Probably because he was aware of how alone in the world he is.
Yeah, I mean he wanted to give the necklace back but he also wanted to literally kill her so ya know, there's that slight inconvenience.

@@KamikazeMoth Not really. Once he realize she loved the guy, he reasoned her heart wasn't broken. He also knew he was dying so both of those contributed to the decision to release her from her promise.

Best part of the movie
When shrike said he had no heart, I thought she was gonna to say then I'll be your heart or like but u have a soul 💔 it hurts to see him suffer alone
But he doesnt suffer.. he has no heart. Thats what is so confusing about this character and I absolutely love it. He has no heart, no soul, emotions, feelings, but he loves in his own way, he is loyal and he is human. He actually feels and has emotions but they are dead, memories. So twisted, so cool...
@@AliGsabano I think what it is, is that he's supposed to have no emotions, but overtime he either redeveloped them due to being online for so long, or what ever blocks his emotions and memory glitches and echoes of the man seep through. So overtime he sees himself as emotionless, knows he's supposed to be, but feels broken and alone.
@@RequiemPoete that is absolutely brilliant. He yearns for emotions, love, being human - and frees Hester from her promise when he sees those in her, after being broken herself. Interesting, not sadness, nor jeolosly, nor anger takes over him, but happiness. Good robot
@@AliGsabano You can see how his memories of being a father have been warped by his programming. He takes in these broken dolls because they're like little versions of him, ( like children) and he fixes them because it's his nature to. In a way he's looking to fill in the blank that in his old life his son filled. That's why remaking Hester is so important to him. Hester filled that void. He's his daughter and like any good parent he wants to end his child's pain. Him going psycho and killing everyone in his way is his sense of fatherhood corrupted by his programming to finish his mission no matter what. At the end when he saw Hester loved 'Guy' ( can't remember name) he relented, one because A) his mission was over Hester found someone to take away her pain and him killing her would cause her pain. B) as a father wanted her to be happy and couldn't bare being the one to hurt her.
What a tragic figure, to be stuck like that in a twilight, not sure why, but knowing something's missing out of your soul.
