  • In my opinion the most profound scene of the amazing movie The talented mr. Ripley. Portraying the unbearable lightness of being. The unbearable weight of love.
    The music is Vivaldi's "Stabat Mater".

    The saddest part is had Tom met Peter under any other circumstances he would never have had to spend a single second pretending to be anyone else. Peter was so pure that he would've loved him for the penniless piano tuner that he was. There's no doubt they would've been completely happy together.

      I'd like to think so too, but Tom was a pathological liar and master manipulator long before he met Dickie. Sociopaths aren't born overnight and Tom would've definitely brought the same baggage to his relationship with Peter.

    I really liked how patient Peter was. He knew there were things Tom didn’t want to ever talk about but he never pressured him about it. In a weird way he just accepted the version of Tom he knows.

    The beauty in the movie is all down to Peter and illustrated wonderfully by the music. He's pure in the way he relates to others, artless and innocent and unable to see the bad in others, not Tom's greed, deception and violence, Dickie's flightiness and selfishness, Freddy's nastiness or any of their snobbery. To me he seems like the only genuine person in the film and his kind trustfulness leads to his death

    What I love about this movie is the amount of depth they put into these characters(Dickie, Peter) knowing that they would be killing them off. They put us on this roller coaster of emotional suspense with Ripley to a point where we too, like him, wished for a moment of salvation, someone to love us and to confide in with all these regrets and the guilts that come with them.
    To hand over the keys to the basement.
    They managed to make these characters so lovable to a point where we too became obsessed with them, and in the end not only did we feel the pain of our own loss, but we felt Ripley's.

    Exquisite scene. Poor Tom. He meets the love of his life at the wrong time. Peter loved him and was a good person. He treated Tom well, unlike Dickie. His one chance to love and be loved, but the ghosts of Tom’s misdeeds haunted him. If he had tried to confide, what would Peter have done? If Tom had turned himself in, I still believe Peter would have loved him and found a way, some way, to try to come close to forgiving Tom. Heartbreaking scene.

    • @laminage
      @laminage 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Yes, if he had only met Peter instead of Dickie, his life could have been so much better. Peter would have been fantastic in helping him, and Tom as you know is a "Quick Study", yet it was for the wrong reasons as we see with Dickie, Marge and even Peter. Another person who was wonderful in a Movie was James McCardle who played Thomas March in Man In An Orange Shirt. (2017). Also Peter's Flat/Apartment is so beautiful. He has everything organized to a T.

      I rewatched this film after twenty years and my goodness that ending hurts. Tom was too broken to embrace his identity (sexuality as well) and preferred hiding in his webs of lies. I wonder what Tom's backstory was and how the sociopathy took roots in his childhood/adolescence? In any case, Peter deserved a rich life and a loving partner, not a horrific ending that makes you want to burst out crying every time you think of It.

    Also I love how Tom plays the piano in this movie. Throughout, opera and classical music are things he normally only plays in New York or later in Italy when no one is there to see him play his game. So for him to play it in front of Peter shows how he can be himself with him. But he is also unable to truly let go when Peter plays a more jovial tune, returning to his melancholy, because he can’t resolve the difference between who he is and who he wants to be seen to be, and what he’s done to continue living his lie.

It's usually a sob story for them. They never get a happy ending. Hollywood did this because the majority of people then didn't want to see gay people have a happy ending. It makes me think if Tom met Peter first, he never had to suffer through trying to find validation through Dickie and the whole murder spree he found himself in. He could've just partnered up with someone who's also rich and high status, and who actually loves him as Tom.

    I read an article where Tom Ripley was compared to Hannibal Lecter, and apparently in the book he was nothing but a cold blooded killer with no remorse or regrets but I can't see Tom Ripley in this movie as someone who has no empathy or love for anyone, or no regrets of what he's done. Sure, he doesn't love, he gets obsessed but I just can't believe that he didn't care about peter. Obviously he wishes he never started killing. He is a cold blood murderer and a bad person but i can't help but pity him a little bit.

    • @jimcarter8034
      @jimcarter8034 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      ...which is the genius of the author, Patricia Highsmith. In the original novel, she portrays Tom Ripley as a much colder, more devious killer whose greatest fear is that he might have to return to being ‘the old Tom Ripley’. He basically kills his way out of this problem and yet the author manages to make the reader ‘root’ for Tom. In the novel, Peter Smith Kingsley is not a significant character - and whilst his name is mentioned - is certainly not murdered. Meredith does not feature at all. But the plot for the screen adaptation is pure genius. I love film and novel separately but entirely on their own merits.

    • @tiaaaron3278

      @@jimcarter8034 The way you described them,it sounds like the book has more...neatness to it. The love between Peter and Tom was beautiful in this but it's a bit idiotic if you think about it. It's kinda unconvincing and somewhat random. And Meredith's obsession with Tom isn't authentic either. Not hating on the movie- I love this movie- but the novel sounds more straightforward and realistic.

    • @grantyoungblood7895
      @grantyoungblood7895 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@tiaaaron3278 The novel is definitely worth reading, if only to see what inspired the filmmakers and to contrast the two versions of the story. It's interesting how they tweaked some things (like making Dickie an amateur jazz trumpeter, rather than an amateur painter), and how Damon and Minghella illuminated the motivations of Tom Ripley. In the novel Tom is really just a sociopath... he wants the good life and he'll do whatever, screw/screw over whoever to get it. In the film he's actually a damaged, weak, relatable human being... a man who is so afraid of being "ordinary" (bland, forgettable) that he'll create an entirely fictitious life for himself to avoid that fate... and do anything, no matter how terrible to defend that fake life.

    To me, the movie is about how little control we have over our lives, almost as if there is no free will.
    Look - Tom had to do it all just cause he borrowed the jacket. He wanted to be someone, he wanted to be important, respected. Then the rest of lies and the terrific situations he found himself in were caused by him trying to avoid punishment, trying to survive (which is a natural human instinct, perfectly normal). The thing is, this movie shows how literally everyone could easily become a murderer, somebody perceived as 'evil'. It's just a matter of coincidence. Yet Tom, a man who killed 3 people, is still portrayed as a human. He has emotions, he clearly regrets everything he's done. There is no 'good' or 'evil', people use these terms to put a label on certain actions, but in reality every action is made under special circumstances. Tom's story is tragic, he is forced to kill the only person who truly loved him, his key to happiness. And throughout the movie, he really has no choice but to make these horrible things.

    Tom was basically warning Peter who he was - describing the scary basement of a murderous psychopath. And Peter was going end up in that basement with Dickie and Freddy. He couldn’t toss him the key but Tom was going to throw him in there and lock the door behind him and continue to stay away from that basement until he threw another body in there.

    When he When he talked about the Key To The Basement, it kind of reminded me of Petals On The Wind by VC Andrews which was the Sequel to Flowers In the Attic. W hen Cathy went back into the Attic 12 Years after escaping with her Brother Chris and her Sister Carrie whose Twin Brother Corey died, she couldn't' believe that it was the way it was when they left. Nothing was touched, not even the Cryptic Message that Cathy Wrote "We Lived In The Attic Christopher Corey Carrie & ME, Now There Are Only Three". When she asked her Stepfather/Lover Bart Winslow did he ever go into the Attic, he said No if you've seen one youve seen them all. He even explained it was locked up so there was no way for him to go into, and he had no interest. He admitted it was a house with alot of strange incidents, from hearing Ballet Music to a Girl Kissing him, when he found out the truth later on the Night Of The Foxworth Xmas Ball which is Virginia's Society Event, to say he was horrified and mortified was an understatement.

    This is an amazing and very profound moment in this fabulous film - one of my all time favourite films perfectly accompanied by the scenery and music - all adding up to the conclusion how fragile life is. Fleeting joyful moments , and then much longer moments of confusion and regret. A momentary bad choice flipping everything one like life on its head, and a significant knock on effect to others around. I love the way all the characters in this film are multi layered leaving us as the viewers pondering the why's and wherefores of the decisions and life choices made . Such a shame the director minghella left us so early. This film and the English Patient - also directed by him are certainly in top 5 fav movies of all time and I'm certain we would have got to enjoy many many jewels from him. Two very rare exceptions in both cases - the films were better than the books once treated to Minghellas golden touch

      Because he had been "discovered" on board that ferry by Meredith, who only knew him as Dickie Greenleaf. And because Ripley was so damaged psychologically that he couldn't allow himself to be loved as just himself.... Remember how he keeps saying: "I always thought it was better to be a fake somebody than to be a real nobody."

      Peter has already made his feelings about murder clear. How could someone just wake up every morning and go on with life knowing they'd killed someone? I think Tom knew their love would come to an end if he confessed the truth to Peter. I doubt Peter would've coped with the truth about Tom and he definitely would've done the right thing and gone to the police. Tom would've felt he had no choice but to kill Peter to protect himself.

      @@carsonc6659 "Sick" possibly, depending on how you define it. "Evil"? Probably not... He was defending his fictitious life, and he was trapped between reality and that fiction. If he hadn't run into Meredith on that ferry trip, he probably would have gone on to a real relationship with Peter... maybe even eventually confessed what he'd done... given him that "key to the basement door".

    people here apparently don’t think that it could possibly get worse than what happened when tom snuffed out the life of someone who adored him….
    WRONG!!!…..
    a sociopath like Tom often goes on to get married…HAVE CHILDREN….once expendable….they too will join the body count….
    the sociopath doesn’t feel love in the way that a normal person does. their feelings for others are at best superficial and only extend to how those people benefit their lives. even their children are dispensable.
