    “It is difficult for a woman to define her feelings in a language which is chiefly made by men to express theirs.”

    • @Huifen9990
      @Huifen9990 8 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      I remember this line, didn't that explain it all why the most famous poems are men??

    • @jonathanscullen
      @jonathanscullen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Note: So God made the people speak many different languages so they could not work together on building the city and tower.
      Made by one man not men so you can't blame this one on the patriarchy. I understand that you think that woman are useless and had no influence on the evolution of language, but thankfully we have written proof and can blame this solely on one man.

    • @rockblueangel
      @rockblueangel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      Hardy understood how difficult was life for women in his time and he tried to point it out in his novels by using this kind of lines.

    • @subramaniannk3650

      So, language is sexist now! Lol

    • @GirladyLocks
      @GirladyLocks 6 ปีที่แล้ว +71

      Actually, that depends on the woman. If she is emotionally intelligent enough to express her feelings with vocabulary, then this quote is pure rubbish. That's beside the fact that language was developed by all who spoke in the history of mankind. So in fact, this line *is* pure rubbish. I know plenty of men who have more trouble 'defining their feelings' in ANY language than most women I know.

    I can tell most people leaving comments haven't read the book. The story is a lot darker, deep, and more complex than simply 3 guys fighting over a girl, and her having to choose. I don't think anyone who goes to see this will be bored. I personally can't wait!

      Melissa Marcelloni I have read the book but my comments were only based on a comparison of this trailer to the 1960s film. Films don't always follow books faithfully, but I hope this one captures the spirit of it. The 1960s film is one of my favourites so my expectations for this one, aren't high but I don't want to prejudge it before I've seen it.

      Melissa Marcelloni Funny thing is I have read this book maybe 7 or 8 times, it's always on any device I have. It's the most bearable and realistic romance novel I ever read, keep in mind I studied Literature. I think its the standard bearer for not just the romantic age or Hardy but romantic writing as a whole. Males need not find romantic writing cringe inducing neither should females allow themselves to become cesspits for unchecked emotions.
      I'm talking to you "Twilight" and "50 Shades" readers!!

      But then there would be no story or allegorical message to convey. This is the story of the human condition to be weak, vane and selfish, despite a few who are somehow able to rise above these base and petty desires for instant gratification to uphold a higher standard of values that the rest of us might be inspired by.
      Too many people read stories and history as if they would choose less selfishly not knowing everything the reader is aware of. If we examine our lives, most of us have plenty of examples that should dispel this inaccurate notion of ourselves if we were to be completely honest. But most people are anything but honest, especially to themselves, despite striving for the ideal of “To thine own self be true.” What does that even mean other than selfishness to a person who is convinced by their own selfishness that what they are doing is in their best interest rather than a rationalization of an irrational situation that we need be true to validate our selfishness.

    Also, to many of those commenting, read the book, dolls. There's much more to this story than three men in love with one woman. Thomas Hardy is not just some romance novelist, he's a social commentator of his time, and is known for his hard, realistic and sometimes tragic tales.

It's good to know it has been adapted into a movie. Kudos to the producer and the actors. This will surely further preserve Thomas Hardy's literary legacy.

      I thought the book was overrated. The only reason why I finished it was because the prose was gorgeous. But the characters were so infuriating. All of the men were terrible suitors. Gabriel came off as too submissive and way too overly attentive to Bathsheba, William was creepy (I don't think anyone can deny that) and Troy was just a straight up jerk. Despite that I would recommend the book just for the prose alone and the movie did a wonderful adaptation. It also has a beautiful sound track.

      Yeah I don't remember anything in the book indication they were especially close. If a family member who isn't on your radar dies then you aren't expected to grieve like crazy.

    This is one of my uncles favorite books, he gave me a copy once just because. The first Hardy I read. I'm not much of a romance type of person, but this one was more of a character study with romance elements. Very good!

    Mulligan is an exceedingly talented actress, but the best work she's ever done (and perhaps will ever do) was in An Education. The look on her face as she sits on the stairs at the end of that movie was, by itself, worthy of her oscar nomination.

    • @rlegear19
      @rlegear19 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      She was truly fantastic in that role. She was in every scene in a role that demanded that she express naivety, intelligence, pretentiousness, wonder, joy, and feelings of love and betrayal. She pretty much emptied her bag of tricks and used so many facial expressions to great advantage. I personally loved that playful smile at the magazine rack in Paris.

      But, like she said, he didn't ask again. She wasn't ready when he did the first time. It wasn't right until it was. The genius of the novel is that all the characters are so excellently formed and coherent. Everything they do makes sense for who they are, and yet they aren't stagnant. Bathsheba and Gabriel grow together and grow closer. If they hadn't been through all those trials, they wouldn't have witnessed each others' strength and determination and grown to respect each other as much as they did. And if she hadn't 'friend-zoned' him, they wouldn't have become friends, and wouldn't have had such a stable and deep base for their actual romance later on. Hardy writes amazingly about the power of love borne of deep friendship and mutual respect.

      @MadeofGreed ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-ed7et3pb4o well she knew all those years he loved her, and it was clear he never asked again because he was respecting her ... he watched her get married when she declined his proposal, and proposed to by another man. He tought he stood no chance ... but she knew all along he loved her and never did anything.

    Beautiful movie but maybe I'm biased because it's Carey Mulligan. This lady's way of speaking English is totally surreal lovely. She acted and did the narration for a somewhat neglected and extraordinary movie, Never Let Me Go; the acting by everyone was extraordinary but I will never forget her haunting narration in that movie.

    Bathsheba Everdeene was a temptress - a truly immature woman who despicably toyed with the emotions of 3 men. One was murdered as a result, one was driven insane and imprisoned for life and the third - she didn’t deserve him after the way she dismissed and used him for years. Thomas Hardy had quite the imagination…

    • @pandanina

      YES! This is what I noticed as well. I haven't read the book but obviously that's how Thomas Hardy really has written her character, which I really despise, I don't get why he did that. And I thought something was wrong with Carey Mulligan :'D The book and the movie could've been so much better if he only created a Bathsheba that was fitting for Gabriel as well
