This was THE most elegant set/stage/lighting/singing-of-those-songs of all the evening gown segments of the Miss USAs that I've ever seen. I also thought this was one of the most glamorous, beautiful Top 10s of all, as well. All-stars, for me.

What an elegant competition to finish the era of the 80s. The singing is upbeat and the ladies are classy. 1989 standard is quite high. All the top 10 are gorgeous. New Jersey- beautiful gown for the opening. The colour is gorgeous and she wears it well. The deep plunge is quite stunning for the early 90s. She took the risk and paid off. Colorado- the gown makes her look 10 years older. Not a big fan of the lose sheer sleeves. It doesn’t accentuate her skin tone nor the colour. Wrong choice of gown. Louisiana- again, the gown makes her look 10 years older. Or a big fan of the colour nor the design. Oklahoma- stunning gown and she wears it well. The off shoulder cut embroidered with stones are gorgeous. Her broad shoulder accentuate it. Great choice and the score is fair. California - colour of the gown is nice but the upper part of the gown is a let down. Doesn’t accentuate her shoulder nor bust at all. Illinois- beautiful gown. She wears it well but guess not the judges cup of tea. Texas- beautiful gown and she is wearing the gown. The white satin skirt is gorgeous. The sweetheart bust cut is gorgeous. She wears it well. Pennsylvania- nice gown but for some reason, the off shoulder makes her look shorter. The colour is pretty. Arizona- the gown makes her looks older. The colour is nice though. Georgia - beautiful gown and she has confidence in the gown. Gorgeous. Fair score.

Miss CA (beautiful), Miss LA (so pretty), Miss PA (elegant) and Miss AZ (sexy) were scored too low, and TX, OK, and NJ were scored way too high. I'd have CA and LA as 1 and 2.
I agree that Christina Faust from CA was underscored, though I hated that evening gown. She could have done so much better. I thought she was so pretty. Texas did not really do to much for me either, and thought her score was too high. I did think however that NJ and Oklahoma got scored correctly. Gorgeous dress for each. I really wanted Jill from Oklahoma to have won it all or Christina. Miss Louisiana was pretty but didn't like the dress
That year, LeeAnn Locken competed as Miss Arizona. She lost to Gretchen at Miss Texas 1989 that year, to Courtney Gibbs at Miss Texas 1988 and to Michelle Royer at Miss Texas 1987.
CA and LA should have been higher, but their dresses didn't help. Yeah, the dresses might have been the standard back then, but the typical ones ended up scoring better. Yeah, that was a solid year with an awesome top 10 even. Hard to choose a winner.

Yes, Laura Martinez Herring had some unfortunate looks in the 80s. lol Oddly enough, it wasn't until she started a film career that she learned how to style herself (and how to pluck her eyebrows!).
Personally I didn't really get why the judges loved Miss Texas so much, she was my least favorite of the whole top 10. The rest of the top 10 were all so beautiful.

Miss Illinois is so beautiful! How did she not make it to Top 5?? Gretchen was stunning but Miss Illinois was one of a kind.
