I went to school with Miss Oklahoma USA, Jill Scheffert, at Oklahoma City University (O.C.U.). Jill is a great person. I miss you Jill Scheffert (1st runner up, Miss USA, 1989; 4th runner up, Miss World, 1989). Oklahoma City University offers scholarships to beauty queen contestants/winners, mostly in the Miss America franchise. Jill was the only Miss USA contestant I met at OCU.

It aired a few weeks before the 1990 Miss USA Pageant. Gretchen talked about how she was over worked and barely had any time off. She said that Miss USA was overworked and barely had any time off. During Carole’s reign, she experienced similar treatment. The pageant company, Miss Universe, Inc had the attitude that they only had Miss USA for one year and that they had to get as much out of her as possible. Gretchen also complained about not receiving all of her prizes and that several of them were overvalued which meant that she was paying more on taxes than she actually should have. Gretchen convinced Carole to file suit against the pageant towards the end of her reign. After Carole Filed suit, Gretchen and Courtney Gibbs filed suit as well. Christy Fichtner also complained about being overworked during her reign. Miss Universe Inc settled with Carole, Gretchen and Courtney. GuyRex supported them in their lawsuit and MUI retaliated by taking away the Texas franchises. They had already taken away California. Back in the day(1984 to 1991), MUI had a merchandising contract with JCPENNEY. A line of clothing. JCPenney company Miss USA Collection. Swimwear dresses and suits. Miss USA received $10,000 cash CC as part of her winnings and a travel wardrobe for personal appearances at JCPenney stores across the country. 100 days of her reign were spent traveling on their behalf. They traveled like crazy. Gretchen visitors 47 states with JCPenney. Carole visited 45 states. This was in addition to their other duties (USO Tours, sponsor appearances,charitable appearances,etc). In addition, Carole served as a spokesperson for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. She visited 20 cities in 18 states over a one month period. All of this led to the titleholders filing suit.

Wow, Texas won 5 years in a row. Miss USA 1985 should be Miss New Mexico not Miss Texas. Since Miss New Mexico won Miss USA 1984 and Texas had not won Miss USA. No, it was obvious that the Texan girls had that extra something the others didn’t during those 5 years. At least three of them topped the Miss Universe preliminaries but failed to take home the crown.

This for me was one of the toughest years to decide. I thought New Jersey was gorgeous, impecable in the evening gown. I also loved Oklahoma's gown, with such grace and confidence, and of course Texas with her charm and elegance. I know that Gretchen was ahead each round, but for me it really was tight the whole way. My heart was pulling for Jill, but I knew Gretchen had it. And Deborah, well it was just the wrong year to compete, I think each of them could have won in a different year
NOT REALLY!!! Miss Texas USA was the equivalent to Miss Venezuela in the 80's. When you were Miss Texas you were coached & trained by the Legendary Powerhouse duo of Richard Guy & Rex Holt, hence the term "GuyRex" girls. Once you became Miss Texas USA, you weren't just trained to be Miss USA, you were trained to be Miss Universe which is why each of the 5 consecutive Miss USA's from Texas made a strong showing @ Miss Universe. Back in the day Miss Texas USA was the threat @ Miss USA and now she's considered just one of the 51 contestants each year.
One of those men has passed, fairly recently. Don't remember which one. (I'll look it up). There was a report that one of the girls at Miss America had a folder of possible questions that may be asked; how to answer them; and she carried this with her everywhere. She finished 1st runner up. Many now wished she had won because Gretchen Carlson, the winner, has ruined the pageant, according to many followers.@@douglasoneal1391
