    We all sell what we got. Hotness, fatness, height, smallness, intelligence, vapidness, beauty, ugliness, ability, talent, etc. Whatever it is, we sell it because it is what we got. Why do we look at his condition and say it was wrong for him to sell his uniqueness when that is the heart of what showbusiness is?

      I can't agree more! Barnum didn't exploit him. Barnum gave him a once in a lifetime opportunity to live the American dream...and he shined!

    It was good to hear of the high quality of Mr & Mrs. T. Thumb's character. Makes the whole story even more perfect. Thank you for such a lovely re-telling of their life together. I have happily subscribed and look forward to more.

    I’m sure Barnum exploited Charles, especially at the beginning of his career.
    But Charles’ life would not have been so spectacular if it weren’t for Barnum.
    It would appear they had mutual respect.

    There's another explination to Minnie Straten. Charles had a couple of sisters. If one of them had fallen pregnant at that time it would have destroyed her future. I could see them, unable to have children, agreen to adopt the baby and agree to say it was theirs. But indent mortality rate was very high then. They would have been exprected to show her off because of their position. When she died, they would have been greif stricken. This was their child. Parents of adopted children don't love them less. The sister's future would have been in just as much danger, so yes, he signed the paper woek as the father. He was. But, after years an explination would have to be made. Where did the baby cone from. Again, protect the sister and keep their greif to themselves. I could see them saying the public doeant get this one. Making up thr story of the rentex babies so people would stop asking questions. Ita heart breaking when you think of it.

    Coolest story! Just fascinating! This just goes to show that if you figure out what your God given talent is & use it to your advantage, you'll go far. Barnum didn't exploit him. He gave Charles a chance of a lifetime that he would have never gotten otherwise and Charles shined! THIS is what makes America special: The American Dream.

    So many questions. What happened with that baby? Where did she come from. If they loved her, why wouldn't Livina mention her in her autobiography? And what about Nutt? Did he and Livinia's sister get married?

    • @NannupTiger
      @NannupTiger 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Livinia (Mrs Thumb) weighed 13kg as an adult. Charles (Tom Thumb weighed 4.3kg at birth!) any pregnancy would have ended in her death. Dwarf or midget children are often born 'normal' size...

    Is it possible that Charles and Lavinia did indeed have a daughter but simply chose not want to take her on tour and so Barnum would hire babies to fill the role and when their actual daughter passed, the ruse ended?
