96,97,98 are the best years to buy. Before that had issues with wiring and only 4 speed trans. After that Merc we’re in bed with Chrysler and cost cutting started such as 3 valves per cylinder engines. Just my opinion.
The V6 has proved to be pretty much bombproof and without head gasket issues. Leaky valve cover gaskets and weepy rear main seals are about the only real flaws
I have owned the same car for 8 years with a better panoramic roof and it weighs a ton! Beautiful car should be worth more - not even considered a classic - yet!
Too bad it is not a SL500. The gas mileage is not much different but their is a lot more grunt. I am with you on the post facelift being better. The earliest models have all kinds of issues with the ignition system. The cap and rotor system is a big issue. The 5 speed makes a better difference in the gas mileage.

Think also the m104 is a very reliable and relative simple engine, maybe more so than the V6.
