    Just received mine today (knurled version) and it took me awhile to figure out the opening technique-- you move your thumb laterally for the roll-open, or sharply upward into the corner of the cutout for a flick. Death-lock is an issue but it can be overcome even if your fingers are resting lightly on the bar. Overall a great light carry, like a gent's tool more than a gent's folder. Evaporates in the pocket, reassuring 50% lockup, and for such a trim knife it feels great in hand.

      I put a KWIK Thumb Stud on my Quiet Carry Drift and now have the best of all possible worlds. I can Spydie flick it with my middle finger and I can flick it with my index finger. And now with the thumb stud I can thrust it open like Nick opens the Waypoint. It only took me 8 months to figure out to do this but I have a whole new love for it now.

    Nice review. Appreciate that you're calling out the issues. I only tried this at Blade West for a few minutes. The detent combined with the stiffness was the only issue for me. I still want to buy one. This kind of move by a small maker needs to to be supported. Getting Vanax into a production folder had to be challenging.

    • @tacticalcenter8658
      @tacticalcenter8658 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you see vanax in a mass production knife, avoid it like the plague. The only reason it's done well here is because Peter's heat treatment did it. Mass production will ruin the heat treatment for sure.

    • @theknifeconnection9571
      @theknifeconnection9571 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed 100%. Many steels get by with a sub par heat treat. Vanax isn’t one of them

    I've been carrying Vanax Superclean in a custom fixed blade for over a year and a half now. Daily saltwater immersion. Not a speck of rust. Really nice edge retention, responds wonderfully to a ceramic hone, and maintenance free. I've been excited to see a folder made with it. This checks a lot of boxes.

    Fantastic review, Nick! I'm not a knife collector--I really just wanted one singular knife that could do most of what I wanted (understated, locking, small but with contour, sharp, durable, high-quality materials, rust resistant considering I live in a swamp). I thought the Drift might be it and watched lots of reviews. I got mine a few days ago and am extremely satisfied with it. The issues you pointed out truly are the biggest things about it (lockbar not easy to access and unable to flick blade out quickly-neither of which I care about). Really appreciative of how well you broke the knife down so that I could know what I was getting into and decide for myself what were dealbreakers. Thank you!

  • @amateurknives2012
    @amateurknives2012 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I want to like this knife so much mine has a strong lock bar. I had to apply small amount of loctite to the pivot still came loose so had to be a little more generous with the loctite seems that I have resolved that issue does favor the show side if I choke up on the handle it's a good fit, if I handle it by the handle the butt of the handle is very pointy and creates a hotspot. Still undecided of how I feel about this one will see by the end of the month if it's a Carry for me or will we Quietly Drift apart have a good one.

    I agree 100% with your review. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one that was frustrated.
    I bought two of these (one for my pocket the other to keep pristine) as soon as I could get my hands on them. I have several of QuietCarry’s other knives and I like them a lot. The Strand was my go-to fidget toy for the longest time. The only reason it isn’t still on my desk is because I moved and didn’t want to misplace it. I love that knife!
    I expected the Drift to have some of the Strand's design DNA.
    The Drift is by far my most disappointing knife. I’ve had one on my desk for months and haven’t carried it even once. It was destined for greatness and flopped on its face at the finish line. I just can’t get over the awkwardness in opening and closing the blade.

  • @zero2three1

    Lockbar access can be remedied with a little shave on the show side scale but a mediocre detent is unacceptable. So glad you talked about the detent. I'll wait for a revision.

    I don't usually buy $300+ knives. I'm still living in the $100-$200 range. This one had me ready to pop for all the good and great things you listed. Weak detent and poor lockbar access would have made me regret it. I think for those that regularly dabble in that price range will still be thrilled with this knife, but I I'll probably have to hold off. Thanks for the review

    The QC website shows what looks like a Drift with smooth blue ano scales as well as one with red knurled scales. No idea if these are due in a new version (I couldn't see any way to specify them on the site currently) but a splash of colour would lift the looks for those of use who aren't into the 50 shades of grey aesthetic. Might make it a bit easier to see if you were actually using it in around salt water - I find it real easy to drop a knife when its wet, hence I guess Spyderco's yellow salt series. Nice knife for the well heeled boaty.

    $300-ish is too much for me, though. The iQ is expensive too, but a little more do-able. The Chase is nice too, starting at $99 for 20CV is wonderful...But it's also sold out (because of course it is).

    If the detent was good I’d absolutely love it but the detent killed it for me. Also had a slight roll in the edge out of box. I got mine from Urban EDC supply and they advertised it as having quick and snappy action so when I opened the box and flicked it and the blade didn’t roll all the way out I was heartbroken. I’m eagerly awaiting the next folder from them tho. I sense great things from them on the horizon. They have another folder with a thumb stub coming out soon I believe. Great review though and thanks for always being honest. A folder of this capacity can very readily win someone over so much so that they’d ignore the bad.

We use it to cut things . I can't bring myself to spend in excess of $300 for something I open envelopes, open boxes and cut strung with. For what this costs I can outfit 9 people with Rat 1s. One day I'll make a review on this knife. Cause it's not good. I have used it since I got it and it has some large problems to me as a knife. I've shared a few things on some of nicks ig posts. But if your a user avoid. If your a collector then... Hopefully you don't have the issues I had and you should be fine.
