It's bulletproof and that shaft drive is unique and low maintenance. Might not be the most exciting power wise but it's a reliable, low maintenance tractor.
Best bike I have ever owned - for across Australia trips and other long hauls. Ridden in -4C to 47C, once knocking over a 1700 km day. Not the ideal off-roader if you are talking single track but still good on formed dirt roads. For excitement I bought the YamahaT7, a different kettle of fish. Mega reliable is the Super10, after 40K km no shim adjustment needed. My motorised lounge chair.
I miss mine, bought a left over 13 in 16 for $8,499. Rode it everyday to work in every type of weather. Took it on trails, even some snow. Never thought it was heavy, never had an issue with weight. Threw some accessories, gutted the cat, power commander, and K&N air filter, and that was at 16k. With all the winter riding, fork seals went and I did have a side cover dowel pin oil leak. Both easy fixes, never left me sit. Stupid me traded it last year and have missed that boring bike ever since. I found it for sale, $9,995 after it didn’t sell at a local dealer, big city dealer bought it and marked it up. I got 40ish mpg winter, 46-50 mpg summer. The torque is great especially once tuned smooths out low end fueling. Hardly ever shifted above 3,000 rpm. Oh an that thing holds a lot more than 4.5 gallons, musta just started blinking.
I have owned one of these for over 5 years and can honestly say I still love it. I have had the ktm and bmw equivalents and they were nothing but money pits. All I can suggest is get it flashed and get some miles on it, you'll enjoy the lack of drama with owning one.
People obsess about weight in motorcycles, but it's not a universally bad thing. For a road-touring machine it's mostly advantageous, to a point. Heavier bikes don't get blown around as much in the wind. They carry a given load more easily, because you aren't disturbing the center of mass as much when there's more mass to begin with. Towing ability is another attribute I hadn't even thought of. A heavy bike does suck to push around the driveway or parking lot, but I've mostly learned to just avoid having to do that: park it such that you don't have to paddle backwards (unless downhill) and use the motor to move it around (that's what it's there for). Really, the one case where a heavy bike unequivocally sucks, is when you have to lift it from horizontal. Again, though...you just avoid having to do that! I would strongly encourage any *new* rider to start on something light, that you can easily flat-foot. You'll build confidence and skills far more quickly that way. But for someone who's already competent, weight is really just another tradeoff-but it's thought of incorrectly as a detriment.
My first visit to your channel 👋. Ironically, I have a first Gen. S10 also(blue)😍👍. I have a bunch of advice for you. 1) 40-45mpg is pretty much normal unless you really baby it. 2) Invest in a Kaoko Throttle lock. 💯 love mine. 3) Research the ABS Bypass switch mod. I did this. It was cheap and it works 👍 4) Roc Risers work great. Just loosen the cables for the extra reach 🤏. 5) This is important imho.👌 The forward drive shaft guard is a hazard in the original design. I caught my pant leg over it once. Couldn't get my foot down. 🤦♂️ The bike threw me down like a Sumo wrestler. Pinned my left foot backwards under the foot peg. Broke my foot. 😖OUCH! I did a DIY mod to the shield so that would NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!! I can DM/ Email you photos if you're interested. 🙏 6) Check the age of the current Tires. If they're original,, its time to replace. I'm running Shinko 705's. A bit buzzy at low speed but otherwise a great tire for longevity and price. 👍👍Recommended. Thats enough for now. The S10 is a Mile Munching Monster. Enjoy and ride safe. Good luck with your new Adventure. Cheers 🍻, G. In beautiful Boulder City Nv. USA 🇺🇲
Was shopping for something completely different (straight sport cruiser) when a deal on my S-Ten showed up. Too good a deal to pass up, I bought the 'boring' bike. I was fairly nonplussed at the time of purchase. After 5 years, I really like this bike. Cons: Like you stated, she's heavy; not "fast"; valve train noise; not great gas mileage; and, the ADV snobs turn their noses up. PROs: Dead reliable; easy to work on; kinda worry free for long trips (may lull you into not being as prepared for problems as you should be). Mods: Added arrow system, flashed chip; yosh pipe, power commander and givi bags. Still low on power but the curve is cleaner and the butt dyno says more torque, but no much. Prior owner ate most of the mod costs. Conclusion: It's my go to ride. Riding it until it (or me) dies. Hip Tip: If I had it to do over again, I'd have bought the newer version than mine for the better clutch basket; factory cruise control and heated grips. But the old girl is just fine the way she is too.
I have a 2012 and will probably never get rid of it. Yea not a lot of HP but it will go as fast as you need to go, and then some, on any highway in the US. It is heavy but it works fine on dirt roads and two track as long as there isn't a lot of deep ruts, deep sand, mud etc. I have the ECU flash on mine, it doesn't add HP. What it does is remove the throttle body opening restrictions in the first three gears and improves fueling. It really wakes up the bike and I highly recommend it. This bike will ALWAYS get you to where you are going, no issues whatsoever. Change the oil at the prescribed intervals add gas when needed and you are good to go. And yes that drive shaft is really nice, no chains or sprockets to worry about.
I had 2014 ST with electronic suspension. In Canada at the KTM rally they let non KTM’s. Rode it 2 in the rally. Rode it hard for 4 year over 100000 miles on it. Super T, is super reliable. .
I've had my 2015 Super Tenere ES about 14 months and 18,000 miles. 4 states, lotsa backroads, some gravel. 2 Wheel Dyno ecu reflash and Rich's custom seat best mods for me. I get about 50mpg 2up under 65mph. I also get about 39mpg riding solo above 80mph on long interstate rides. Sorry you didn't get cruise, electronic suspension, and heated grips, game changers.
It's like owning an 80's Toyota utility Pickup truck with an 22-R.. It does most of what you need sounds like a Japanese Sewing Machine and keeps on going. My 1013 has 185k and has been all over the south west, Idaho and Wyoming. Originally bought it used twelve grand with the Woody's Wheels Works Conversion 21"x18" full blown knobbies already installed 12 thousand miles. I have to say it transformed the bike into a true trail goat, I could go places would never be able to with 19"x17" but damn did it sit high. Unfortunately I had to convert the rear tire back to 17' because when the tire heated up and expanded it was rubbing the crotch of my swing arm and causing tension on rear spoke nipples creating small cracks around the spoke holes. Now I wish I could find a full front OEM rim, spokes and hub as the orientation of 17"x21" is now useless.
This bike beats the GS,Adventure R and any other adventure bikes from it's class, when it comes to reliability. Maybe it's boring, but it will not break when you are running:)
My dog rides everywhere with me on my 2 stroke kdx200. I built a box for him on the rear fender, he is only 35 pounds and is very agile being a heeler cattledog.
I bought one in 2012. Reliable, comfortable but yes heavy and boring. Traded for a KTM 1190. Fast, exhilarating but uncomfortable, heavy and not as good on the road as my S10. Ended up with a KTM 790S in 2019 and still have it. It’s lighter, just about as fast if not faster than the S10 but it has much better electronics. The S10 did better than any of my other adventure bikes on the highway and while not the best off pavement it did just fine. I’ve ridden many fire roads with creek crossings on my S10 with no issues. I don’t recall the mileage on my S10 but my 790 gets about 60 MPG which is hard to beat. The S10 is likely better for 2 up though. The 790/890 is more for solo riding. All are fine if you consider what surface you’re going to spend the most time on.
Welcome to dad jeans life. I have a 2007 BMW R1200GS with 40,000 miles on her, and the Tenere ticks all the same boxes. Heavy as fuck, check. Shaft drive, check. Reliable as a column of marble, check. My bike is even a bit more stone hatchet being air cooled. That melanoma isn't anything to mess with, glad you're getting screened at your age. Can't wait to see the content you make with that sexy pig of a machine. If you plan on getting crazy with that bike offroad, look into a z rig pulley system so you can get yourself out of sticky situations.
It’s the only big adventure bike that I’m able to get both feet planted on the ground. Not important for some, me it is. It’s also a very comfortable and dependable. I dig it!
I just purchased my 2023 Super Tenere, I am 58 years old and figure it is most likely the last new bike I will ever purchase. Oh yes it came with heated grips and cruise control.
I have a 2013 Super T and it's honestly a great bike for putting miles on. I've had lots of bikes and I just can't find one I like better. Suspension and traction are better than you'd think offroad, but it's heavy.
I thought about a trailer for my dog but didn’t like that he’d have to sniff exhaust the whole time. I thought of hooking a tube up to the exhaust and routing it to the back of the trailer. Look at trailers that attach through the axle, there are a couple out there.
People don't see bikes I doubt a trailer is going to be better. Someone doesn't realize you are towing a trailer and takes your dog out. Also to consider, one of most common injuries for pets are eye injuries when sticking their heads out the window of cars. Traveling behind a bike its going to get a lot of stuff thrown up at it.
@@likkitongue if I were to do such a thing. I wouldn’t ,but I’d be thinking about it’s ears and eyes so I’d put some type of pretty large windshield on it. You are definitely right though. Things he needs to think about if he hasn’t sold the new bike already. Crf250l forever with great luck, then he started buying, and selling bikes like no one I’ve ever seen. Seems life is changing and he can’t make up his mind on what he wants to do. Hopefully he figures out what it is he wants. I think it’s called fickle when one can’t make up their mind. It’s usually a woman’s trait though.
Had a 2014 Super Tenere same color and same bags, for 2 years. Cost of ownership much better than the BMW, but left me feeling bored, and I disliked the weight. Switched to a gently used triumph tiger 800, couldn’t be happier.
It's a very good bike. I have the 2017 XT1200ZE version and have had it from new. It's been fantastic, ultra reliable. After getting Yamaha's accessories for the bike and one or two others I have spent no money on it accept to put fuel in it and service it. I have owned an Africa twin, better looking and better sounding but not a better bike, by no means. Also had the BMW GS Rallye, nice bike but a bit more expensive to maintain and service and loaded with tech. The only tech I have being the ZE is power modes, traction control, electronic suspension, cruise control. It's heavy but I only feel that when pushing it in/out of garage etc. It handles well on the move fast or slow, returns about 45mpg to 49mpg depending on riding style and I can cover around 220/230 miles per tank with about 3 ltrs 4 ltrs still in it, not wanting to run it dry. It's a great bike. I've heard of getting its ECU "flashed" but have never looked to doing it as yet. The worst thing I find with it is when riding in the winter in England at night and in rain, the headlights are crap!!! It needs Denali lights on it I reckon, which I will get around to doing I reckon. It's a great reliable bike hands down.
I have a 2012, bought it new. It’s a terrific bike. The biggest issue you’re going to have off road is with those stock tires. Get some off road tires like the Mitas or Heidenau or some equivalent and that big bike can do some things off road you won’t believe. And I do have to say it, riding around in shorts and a t shirt is stupid! Learn from my experience. 😊
Word of experience. Better to slow down before a curve and then accelerate through while pulling a trailer. I'm in the process of building a single wheel trailer in hopes of doing more off roading than I can with the two-wheeler. Actually, I do no off-roading with the two-wheel trailer
After watching a trailer almost wipe out a gold wing in front of me, I'm not sure I would ever go that route. I saw pictures of an adv rider out west that had a light weight removal side car he hauled his dirtbike on out to the desert. I think that would be sweet
No shade…I ride in no gear all the time too but the irony of riding without gear…in the sun…to the dermatologist made me laugh. Something I’d do too 😅😅😅
The best bike ever made, no doubt about it (i´ve owned almost every kind of bike, more then 30) . It´s the more intelligently engineered bike ever made. Never mind the critics, I've had 3 and I suppose I have enough credentials to be sure about. I have thousands and thousands of kms in it without a single issue. We can tow any bike the breaks down....)....and about slow....only if you want to go faster then 250km/h........(although it cruses normally and smoothly at 130/140kms/h). PS: they introduced CC in the 2014 model.
I have crash bars, TKC80's, and a switch to disable the ABS on my Supter T. I live in the Yukon Territories and I go offroad all the time. No problems. And I'm a big fat old man lol!
It takes time to jell with super 10, I have one too. It is not BORING bike at all, after you do air box, flash and exhaust , it will have 120hp +, 2 gear FOT hold on :)). the sound wirh full Arrow is incredible. Handling with right tires is superb , do not slow down off raod , just give her , she will chew through everything.
Cruise is available for/on all models...$650USD from McCruise in Australia for the Gen1,factory on the Gen2. I prefer the dash on the Gen1 with the analogue rev dial...great bike to have,if planning for long-term ownership, bulletproof!
I’ve owned, Aprilia sxv yami 450f r6, r1 and a KTM rc8r. gsxr 6, 750, 1k cbr 6 and 1k v strom, and tons of others. My 22 super tenere is my fav now. Can play on the trails in Az and still rip to Vegas or CA for the longer trips. 2up is easy and planted. Mine has all the newer fun stuff tho.
My doggo has rode with me for over 30k miles and you may consider a single wheel trailer like a kip moto trailer. My pup sits behind be but I've seen 2 ups with a doggo in the trailer work fine too
Tanner, I purchased one a couple of years ago and I ride it annually to South Carolina . I do not tow anything yet ( Like yourself) can’t find a decent tow set up. I would love to tow our pup Sampson a Cane Corso 102 pounds. If you do find something before me…. Let us know please.
Yes, but the Stratoliner carries its weight low. The Super T is top-heavy, pure and simple. It is HARD to get back up, and I've only done it with someone else's help. 😬
I have considered one of these. I've heard they are being discontinued in Europe due to emissions standards. I see they have not put a 2023 on Yamaha's website. I have also heard there maybe a new Tenere 900 coming. I wonder if this one will continue in the USA?
As a former owner I can say for travel bike is great, only issue I can say is the front fork seals, in 5 years had to change x2, besides that no other issues
I sold my Africa Twin. Big mistake. But ended up with a 22’ KLR. Super comfy and ergonomically great for me. But it’s a tank and the power to weight isn’t that great. I do get between 50-55mpg cruising at 70mph which is nice. Don’t want to drop $400 on crash bars so it’s been mellow off-road so far. It’s decent but not spectacular.
Only really boring thing on this bike is the OE exhaust sound….with an aftermarket one, much enjoyable ! Thought : strange to be cautious about skin cancer and ride with no gears and no gloves 😅 Take care !
When is Lex going to ditch the clapped Focus? I think the S10 will be fun for a while, maybe keep it for the rest of the year then launch it. I still think you should get a 2000's-ish Wing and then take it to the coast, that would be one hell of an adventure and I bet you'd get a lot of views with that!
you should just open an bike dealership as much as you buy and sell. When I bought my T7 they had a used Tenere 1200 there but it looked huge to me and I chickened out.
DO YOU HAVE RIDING MODES ON THAT 1ST GEN BECAUSE SPORT MODE IS SUPPOSSED TO BE MUCH FASTER PLUS THAT ECU FLASH YOU MENTIONED AND YOU SHOULD BE GOOD - IT WAS A BIT UPSETTING THAT YOU CALLED THIS THE MOST BORING ADV SINCE I AM PLANNING ON GETTING ONE ALSO BUT I'LL FORGIVE YOU. BY THE WAY 1ST GENS NEVER CAME WITH CRUISE ABOUT ALL THE 2ND GEN ES MODELS HAVE IT PLUS ELECTRONIC SUSPENSION. I HOPE I CAN GET A 2ND GEN BUT THE 1ST GEN ARE DEFINETELY CHEAPER :)
You’re just gonna ignore team orange 🍊 like this? And instead of the trailer idea have you looked at GoRuffy? They have a tail mounted dog “rack”/“carrier” it’s not a cage that they make. They also travel the globe with there German Shepard. Edited to add that my 1290SAR 45mph on trails and 50+ on the black top🤙 Edited again. Seen the GoRuffy part. 😂
I dig the choice, not what I expected. I wouldn't mind seeing you keep this to mob around. Reminds me of the Fort Nine video for it. "Boring". Lol That mpg is rough.
29,000 miles, 8 years, 13 different countries, zero issues: I’ll stick with my ‘boring’ Super Tenere 😉
Damn. I did 40,000 on my dr650 in 3 years. Only one country, but many states. Love my tenere though! Looking forward to this summer

One of the BEST Yamaha motorcycles built!! My 12 won't be going anywhere except back to Arizona for the winter! :) Nice Video!! :)
LOOOOOOOVED my Super Tenere. Ride it for 11days across multiple states. The few times I need go into the dirt or grass…not on a gold wing. Life saver

Seems life is changing and he can’t make up his mind on what he wants to do. Hopefully he figures out what it is he wants. I think it’s called fickle when one can’t make up their mind. It’s usually a woman’s trait though.
It's gone already isn't it? 🤣 - Frank
LOL
I got one a couple of months ago. I dropped it 4 times so far lol. Off road is heavy to maneuver , but I love it .
And isn't it fun to get back upright? ;)
@@rel62 lol no makes my back hurt .
I love my Tenere , I go through a lot of bikes but the S10 is a keeper for life , its surprising capable and easy to ride off road
This is great news! Now all the off road riding will be on the 250L! The glory days are back sooner than I expected!!!!
Air box: what did you change buddy? Thanks
@@Kjutte1 Hi ,K/N filter and 3× 1" holes in intake nozzle .
@@redbear1935 Thanks man. Any specific part of the nozzle? On the snorkel itself, like Kev's airbox mod?. Already have the K&N filter

Don't be worried about lifting it, I dropped the stratoliner the other day and it's almost 900 lbs and was easy, I was super surprised
If Yamaha puts a detuned (for torque gains) MT-9 motor on the Tenere 700 frame and outfit it with a shaft drive, I believe it will be a winner.
OIC. Diesel is the dog! I was wondering if you were gonna try to haul a semi tractor with an adventure bike LMAO.. 🤣😂😅😁🤣
36000km across Canada and States. Not a glitch. Nothing to worry about.
As a former owner I can say for travel bike is great, only issue I can say is the front fork seals, in 5 years had to change x2, besides that no other issues
What year was the bike that you had to change the fork seals on?
@@rel62 2013
Came across your videos because I just picked up a crf250L. Cool vids man shows the fun in the hobby
That's a great bike, are you kidding. Good for you!!
Have you called Hitch Doc in Jackson MN? They are a company that started out making hitches for motorcycles
Thought : strange to be cautious about skin cancer and ride with no gears and no gloves 😅 Take care !
tanner there are sidecars for dr650s just an FYI if you want to take the dog with you.
Have FUN
I once had a K1200LT, 800lbs of sweet bike
When is Lex going to ditch the clapped Focus?
I think the S10 will be fun for a while, maybe keep it for the rest of the year then launch it. I still think you should get a 2000's-ish Wing and then take it to the coast, that would be one hell of an adventure and I bet you'd get a lot of views with that!
You may want to take a look at a V-Strum 1050 XT as well just as comfortable a huge aftermarket and you get a couple electronic aids and cruise
The big question is, do you still have the bike?!
If boring equals stone reliable, I’ll take it, the last place I want to deal with a German or Austrian electronic nightmare is the middle of nowhere
Should’ve went Africa Twin if you’re going big and heavy
Cruise is only available with 2014/15 and up
S/10 owner! Ecu flash a must! 20 horsepower defiantly not! Better fueling no gear restrictions. Boring is awesome.
Perhaps, a scooter sidecar on the Helix? Postulate the concept for a while, perhaps?
You guys have heard of the movie, Gone in sixty seconds. Well, this is the sequel.
Nice riding gear by the way
Make up our minds for us! I love my mint WR250r with a rear shock rebuild
What year is that bike? Did i miss it?
I rode my copy of the most boring ADV bike to work today. It's pretty bland indeed, but it freeway cruises so well.
Any local welding shop worth its salt should be able to throw a hitch together fer ya👍
Surely something that goes through the wheel, with it's own wheel, like a towed 5th wheel, keeps any weight off of the motorcycle suspension?
you should just open an bike dealership as much as you buy and sell. When I bought my T7 they had a used Tenere 1200 there but it looked huge to me and I chickened out.
How come you have never considered a new honda crf450x.
Jon Moore at Moorespeed can definitely get you set up with a hitch
Best bike I have ever ridden.
I dont see this working out. But I've been wrong before...i wish you luck tho and hope it works out!
Looks exactly like my daughters dog
Love the super tenere
Why knock reliability? Finding adventure on a reliable machine is PRICELESS.
You’re just gonna ignore team orange 🍊 like this? And instead of the trailer idea have you looked at GoRuffy? They have a tail mounted dog “rack”/“carrier” it’s not a cage that they make. They also travel the globe with there German Shepard.
Edited to add that my 1290SAR 45mph on trails and 50+ on the black top🤙
Edited again. Seen the GoRuffy part. 😂
" I bought an ADV bike that runs with Diesel"
My coworker is bugging me to get a KTM 390 Adventure. It's a maybe, but I'm still enjoying my little motard.
Is that the 960 exo helmet?
love my fjr 1300 2002 but if i buyed a enduro it would be this because has power shaft drive
Great bike for longer miles or even BDRs. Also for what most people consider off-road. Pretty bad for anything remotely single track.
I love my 2021. I rides like my Versys X300! No kidding! Cep for the torque! 😂
I hated my versys x300 lol
Are there many trails and cool spots in Ohio to ride? The family is starting out on dirtbikes and I wanna try to find local trails.
Better keep two hands on the bars.
Hey just be careful pulling the dog. Make sure he’s got his ears protected. The wind can do a lot of damage
Lord have mercy. Karen motorcycle armchair riders???? Who would have thunk it.
The dog will be fine. You probably ride with a Fauci mask.......
@@billgilkerson5294 funny I bet I’ve got more miles on my belt than most people, you know
Still like it?
Tow rigs are dangerous af! Please don't put your dog in one.
Yeah a trailer on a motorbike alone caught me off guard, but bringing a dog on the back 😬
@@mikeadz1 yup, there's a good reason why the DOT won't allow passengers in a trailer. If I wouldn't put my kids in it, I surely wouldn't put my dog.
Yeah seriously sounds awful I’d never do that
I'm in the no dog in the trailer group. In the flow of exhaust like someone said plus many other safety factors.
I accidentally bought an electra glide and now I need a dirt bike
It’s an ok bike- For those that can’t afford a BMW GS.
I dig the choice, not what I expected. I wouldn't mind seeing you keep this to mob around. Reminds me of the Fort Nine video for it. "Boring". Lol
That mpg is rough.
New to the channel. For the first 2 minutes I thought Diesel was the GF...
