    Great tip, Tim. I showed this video to my geometry students when talking about the diagonals of rectangles, and how to prove that a figure is a rectangle. One way to prove a rectangle: prove that it is (a) a parallelogram with (b) congruent (equal) diagonals. The math behind your method: (a) when you measure to ensure top plate = bottom plate, studs = other studs, the figure is "proven" to be a parallelogram (not a rectangle, as you mentioned at 0:48 in your video) . At this point in your process, it could be close to a rectangle, but shifted (i.e., a generic parallelogram) as you did mention; (b) when you ensure the diagonals are equal, the figure is then "proven" to be a rectangle . Again, thanks for the video. It is a great, practical geometry application, and it helped my geometry students to better understand rectangles.

      Shawn Remy You're most welcome Shawn! If your class ever wants to Skype me in for a LIVE video lesson about other geometry and building tips, let me know. I've done it with other teachers. Thanks for your vocation and for educating future thinkers and DOERS!

    Excellent demonstration, thank you for posting this. It always pays to take extra time and trouble measuring and setting out, rather than having to make endless adjustments to get things to fit odd angles later!

    Thanks for the video! This happened to me tonight, so if it’s not square do you just force it back into shape? I’m trying to make a rectangular plinth for a cabinet. Thank you

      Out-of-square things cause issues down the road.

    Thanks for your comment. The equal-diagonal method allows people to square things where the sides of the triangle are *not* multiples of 3,4,5. That is the only problem with the 3,4,5 method.

      a2 + b2 = c2 Pretty simple math especially since a and b are the same measurement. This is a great example of why you should have not been sick that day in high school math class. ;-)

    Question how would you check and arch gate higher on one side then another

    • @askthebuilder
      @askthebuilder  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simple. Make a square out of the opening just below the beginning of the arch.

    @conmanumber1 Well, yes and no. Let's imagine these dimensions: A wall 97 and 1/8 inches high by 243 and 3/4 inches long. Tell me quickly what that diagonal measurement is? Using my method in the video, I'll have the wall square in about 5 seconds with a helper. That's faster than you could enter those measurements in a fancy calculator.

    After the studs are in. I show you the exact process on a real wall in my video series about Wall Framing. Go to my AsktheBuilder website, the dot com one. Click the SHOP icon. Then click DIY Video Series.
