  • We are very pleased to share with you our latest addition to our range of Battle Ready Bases - Meet the new Deserts of Maahl theme!
An accursed land, dry to the bone, where some resilient wildlife still thrives lurking in the sands (snakes, scorpions, lizards…). Amid desert rose crystals and the undying cacti the winds sweep the sands to form ridges, exposing crackled earths and clay. What remains of stray animals and explorers lays abandoned in the wastes, a chill and everlasting reminder of the perils of Maahl - "Consumer of hopes", "Destroyer of dreams".
Will your miniatures embark on the quest for Desert's End? Will they be able the cross this sundering hell between the lands? Can they find shelter for the nights?
Ask yourself this... will you dare to venture into cursed Maahl!?
Available on the 12th of October 2023!

They look awesome though personally I would rather get unpainted versions.

Hello! Thank you for your comment!
We can help you to make a similar build for yourself, of course!
You should try to mimic some of the textures, in particular the crackled ground and "dune" like effect ^(which could be the most difficult to achieve all in all).
You can explore a bit how your display would look when compared to the "Deserts of Maahl" bases - for instance you could make it featuring a larger rock formation (good for a scenic photo background), in this area perhaps with more concentration of debris due to more deposition (with some rocks), and also with more of the darker crackled ground areas, instead of the more difficult sand "dune" effect. (It actually feels more realistically if you end up with different areas in the overall scene).
To make the crackled effect, we have made some tutorials (for other themes though) where we show how you can do it using some products that exist in the market.
Please check our Basing Guide playlist for videos where we show this, in particular the "Arid Bases" and "Burned Lava Bases" . You can also see them for some generic tips you can use when creating bases/dioramas :)
If you want to try to mimic the Sand "Dune" effect, you could use a sand texture (use for example VALLEJO's Sand texture, or MIG's Sand texture - both would work well), which is also good to cover any gap, the transition of bit edges, and even to add ground height variation to the whole scene - Important in Dioramas.
For rocks similar to the ones in the desert theme, we suggest you look to our Basing Bits offer, specifically the "Rocks" basing bits.
To achieve the color effect like the "Deserts of Maahl" you can apply a beige color when priming with a spray - we use FOSCO's "Desert" spray. Look for something similar. Other beige like sprays should also work fine.
Use the drybrush technique over the ground and rocks as well (as shown in our Basing Guide series).
Then , the trick to achieve the color effect of the theme, is to use two dry pigment colors directly on the ground (we also show this in the videos above) - In particular, a yellow pigment and a dark brown pigment. (we don't sell dry pigments sadly, but you could use some from VALLEJO or SENNELIER). If you feel the need, you can fix any pigments by using a pigment fixer product.
We hope this can help you!
      Thanks again! And Happy Hobbying!

These are sold already exactly like in the video! It is the new theme of our Battle Ready Base range. Handmade, and sold already painted and with tufts :)
For a tutorial on desert themes, we also have some in our Basing Guides playlist. Please check them out ;)
