    2011 Tahoe Hybrid. Drove myself crazy trying to find my alternator. The kid at the auto store even said my alternator was bad but I don't even have one. Why this info is so hard to find is beyond me. Frustrating.

  • @mikelauer5717
    @mikelauer5717 ปีที่แล้ว

    It was originally named "alternator" because it generates alternating current, which the "spinning mechanism" as you call it still does. It can be rectified on board or divorced, doesn't matter, it still generates AC.

    Does the DC - DC converter only work when the car is running? Shouldn’t;t I be able to start my car from the High Voltage source if the 12v battery fails?

    • @stephenhu9561

      No, charging amperage is usually low. Starting a car takes upwards of 200Amps

    Toyota Prius 2005 13,8 V car ON . When I turn on all electrical devices in the car - the voltage drops to 12.5 V. Does this mean the alternator is broken.The alternator is holding constant voltage, there are no voltage peaks.

    I have a 2010 Toyota Prius with 130K milage. I replaced the 12V battery 4 months ago. Again with the same problem before the car will not start. However, I can start the car when jumping the 12V battery. It might be the dc/dc converter or the big battery for possible problems.

    Hi Dave,
    Thank you for your insightful tips and taking the time to do these videos. I am a TH-camr as well and understand the effort that goes into these videos.
    We have a 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid and i have know for 2 years that the battery is done. just yesterday the alternator will no longer charge the battery.
    Can you please let me know how to change what ever needs to be changed or whether i am even able.
    Thank you again,

    WRONG! ALL "mild hybrids" have alternators, but often they are very large and are also used in reverse as a 3-phase motor to add to crankshaft power. Examples: 2007-2010 Saturn Vue Green, Aura Green, Chevrolet Malibu, Buick eAssist Regal and Lacrosse... to name only a FEW. In many of these, this same Alternator/Motor also serves as the Starter motor via the same oversized crank connected belt drive.

      2011 Ford fusion hybrid was told has no alternator could be DC to DC converter issue.

    • @beforebefore
      @beforebefore 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Mike-dq9cr Every Hybrid uses an alternator to charge the HV battery pack using power from the ICE power plant. This same alternator is also used to start the gas engine... so the Alternator can operate bi-directionally in energy conversion... rotational energy to electricity, or electricity to rotational energy.
      An "Alternator" is the technically correct. term used to describe the process of converting rotational energy to Alternating Current electricity... AC power. Even in a common "emergency generator" used to power a house during failure of the AC grid, that "generator" technically uses an Alternator... NOT a "Generator"... which describes generation of DC power.
      However the two words get used interchangeably when describing hybrid functions... it's not technically correct, but it's common.
      This has resulted in the creation of the term "motor-generator" when discussing hybrid and electric vehicle operation... since even in a pure electric vehicle, the drive motor (which is AC driven), also operates as an alternator/generator to push power back into the EV HV battery pack during regenerative braking. (hybrids also use regen braking)
      In modern hybrid vehicles, the Alternator resides inside the transaxle, where it has access to the crankshaft of the gas engine... so it has the ability to either apply rotational torque TO the crankshaft (to act as a "starter motor"), or to convert the gas engine rotational power into the required HV DC power to charge the hybrid HV battery pack while driving.
      "Mild hybrids" have no special "Hybrid transaxle", and this "alternator/motor" or "motor/generator" is mounted to the gas engine, driven from the crankshaft by a wide serpentine belt. In this "mild hybrid" type of application, the alternator/motor usually is capable of 25hp or more.
      A typical common gas-engine 12v alternator is only capable of maybe 1500 Watts of power generation... which is only 2hp.
      WeberAuto channel is a great learning resource on Hybrid systems. He has a video comparing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation Ford Hybrid transaxles... "Ford Hybrid Transaxle Generations"

    On an 05 hybrid I need to change the serpentine belt but it doesn’t have a tensioner. Is there a simple way to replace this or is it a pain in the rear?

    • @AVIONDEMAND
      @AVIONDEMAND  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A drive belt tensioner is used to keep the proper tension on your vehicle's serpentine belt. In short, I see it as a pain in the butt. Though you can always check your local shop for help, and there is a neat video called, "How to Replace Serpentine Belt Toyota Prius 2003-2009" that might have a few tips or a solution to your problems. I hope that helps.

      Good evening,
      In all sincere forms of honesty, you might as well sell the car. To fix/replace the batteries is not going to be cheap, even if it was a newer model, and even then you have about another year. Unless you are in love with the car, it is far more sane to sell your vehicle to a dealer then proceed with repairs.
      Good luck with your future endeavors!
