    Although this is a good way to see what the resting voltage of the 12 V battery is, and also shows if it is being charged, this has nothing to do with the Hybrid driving battery.

      Prius does not have an alternator. It takes traction battery’s high voltage and through an inverter/converter charges the 12V utility battery.

    Sorry, but this is not a good test of the hybrid battery because the prius 12v battery is very small (Amp hour capacity) and it only takes a few amps to push a fully charged 12v battery up to its full charge of 13.8 volts. The hybrid battery in the prius has to send 100s of amps to the motor when needed for traction

    It is a good idea to make notes of these procedures and keep them in your glove compartment. I got in my car and drove off and notice that the digital clock and the radio presets had reset. I did not check anything out and later, when I had gotten to my destination and then gotten back in my car I had a dead battery. The cause was the 12V battery ground connector had come off completely. When I reconnected it I had to give it a jump with my little battery pack and I was off. I should have checked everything as soon as I noticed digital clock resetting. It does not just happen for no reason

    My catalyc comverter got stolen on my 2009 prius.. I drove like that for less than 2 miles and got red triangle with exclamation point on it. When that happened car started to loose power and eventually died on me:( right now I have it at a muffler shop where they will put another catalyc converter on but car still does not turn on..when I press on power button all the lights come on with rd d triangle like if car it's on but engine not on. Lights, radio and power windows work . The windows are slow though so I don't know if battery it's dying. If I remember I have one purple bar. Also keep getting a message about something that car needs to be on flat surface and something about the transmission .
    A while back it completely died on my while I was changing the passenger mirror, after I was done I gave it a jump and everything was good. This time it won't move from one purple bar even after a jumped it.

      hey man! The Prius Cat Converters being stolen is a real problem now. I have friends who had this happen to their car too. Reality is, these cars are so good and last so long that parts are highly desirable. You don't see anybody cutting parts off a KIA, right?? lol. Anyway, it sounds like your Gas engine is not kicking in to charge the pack because you're missing part of the exhaust system. Once it's replaced it should go back to normal.

    Here in Pakistan we get only used batteries for replacement. I had code p3000. So I got my hybrid battery replaced. When I used the method you described. The battery voltage are 12.1 but after turning on the car on diagnostic mode the voltage dropped to 11.8. Hybrid battery display screen also shows sudden drop of bars from blue to purple sometimes when I stop the car for few minutes. And on two purple bars car keeps running for many minutes but the third blue bar takes alot of time to appear. Its not happening always but randomly. Can you give your expert opinion whether the battery is good or bad.

      hey buddy! These cars do not have an actual alternator. What happens is after the initial few seconds when the 12V battery starts the car's electronics, the Hybrid Drive battery kicks in and takes over, that is where you're seeing the 14+ volts come from. Not the alternator really.

    My only problem with using this method is that the central display sometimes doesn't work. It will go off for months at a time (no consumption readout, no radio, etc.) and then start working for weeks or months. Dealers and specialty shops won't try to repair (it's obvious it's a faulty connection, but I realize it could be a bad solder on a chip, which would be ridiculously time consuming to find) but will only replace it at quite a hefty price. Trying to keep this car running, since I'm now retired.

    • @hybrid32494
      @hybrid32494  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      hi Diana! I know exactly the reason why you're having intermittent DASH light problems, this is a common issue in all older prius cars. It's called the combination meter malfunction and results from a faulty capacitor in the dash cluster. Very pricey to repair. There is only one easy and reliable (but temporary fix). In the trunk you will find the regal 12V battery (not the hybrid battery). You need to disconnect a white wire that clips into the battery for 10 seconds. This will reset the car's electronics once you reconnect it and the dash will light up. Often times this happens in the cold, but it's a 100% temporary fix.

    My battery shows 90 to 100% in the morning, and when I start driving, no further than 2 blocks, the Battery drops to one bar. And then slowly builds back up. But lately, it started doing it right after I get off work. The battery gets down to one bar all the way home, for 42 miles. My gas mileage is bad 38mpg. I installed some cheap injectors, and my mpg went to 48mpg, but I got a check engine light. Then, after almost three months, I went back to the old injectors bc the car had some misfiring issues when the car was coming to a stop. I suspect a dripping injectors so with the old injectors, the misfire dissappear but the bad mpg came back.

      In Toyota hybrids the 12V battery is charged by a DC-DC converter in the inverter assembly. That is why the battery voltage came up when the system went ready, and will eve before the engine starts. No alternator or starter on them.

The car is being sold for $5500, the Carfax is clean but I’m just a little worried that it is over 220,000 miles. Can you advise me if that is a good buyer or not?

      hey man! I'm glad to see you're looking for a prius. Let me give you some advice. The price is fair for a 2012 with high miles. As Long as you test drove the car and it's in good working order there is noting to be too worried about. The reality is for 5K you cannot even buy a cheap Honda Civic with 150K at this point. The prius will be way more economical and it's a much nicer car overall than any economy car you could get for under 7K. Also there are so many of them around that If you have battery issues a rebuilt pack is cheap (under 1K).

    I don't see how this tests your HV battery since there is a DC-DC converter which drops the 2xx volts from the HV battery down to 14V to charge the little 12V battery. There is soo much more voltage and capacity in the HV battery its condition will never effect the 12V charge circuit.

    • @hybrid32494
      @hybrid32494  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey buddy! This test does not self test the HS battery, you're right. I am only attempting to show that you can self-test the voltage on the 12V battery and then when the HV battery powers up you can see it's powering the 12V battery. Ofcourse this is not a 100% indicator of the HS battery's health. But for the most part it's an easy on the go quick test to do if buying one of these cars.

      HEy buddy, any voltage under 11 is low for the 12V battery. Do you notice any of the dash lights going out or any electric issues upon startup? The 12V aux battery is responsible for the first few seconds of starting the car, after that the hybrid battery takes over, thats why you see a voltage jump to 13.6 V.

    • @cawag98

      The prius doesn't actually start the engine with the auxiliary battery, unlike all other cars. The voltage of the auxiliary battery can easily be tested with a multimeter either in the fuse box (where the jumpstart point is) or in the tailgaite right area, where the battery is. Maybe, don't drive around while you're videoing showing stuff to us, it would be safer for other roaIf d users. My prius aux batttery was stuck at about 9.6 too - suggesting 1 or more of the 6 internal cells were not happy. Sometimes you can charge the battery (google videos on using a dumb charger to renew an old 12v battery) with a 'dumb' charger for a few hours to get the voltage back up, but in general, the battery's health is hurt by being unused/uncharged for a long time, which is probably how your car and mine got so low.
