When I was a younger kid around 13 I found out that my dad had a bunch of O gauge Lionel cars, tracks, and engines. They were left to him by my grandpa who I barely got to know before he died. I would spend HOURS a day having fun conducting a whole rail yard in my bedroom. Well one day my whole setup was gone. Dad sold it all. Thinking back on how I could’ve played with the set with my son who is 1 year old now, it brings back that childhood sadness.
What perfect timing. It never ceases to amaze me how huge Big Boy actually is in all regards including model form.
Hopefully the next run will incorporate some of the smaller exterior changes to 4014 for excursion service, such as the dual dynamos, roller bearing caps on the tender being painted silver and the washout plugs being stainless steel dog bowls.
I’d also love to see BLI finally put out their own FEF-3.

To keep my big boy in budget I picked up the reveall plastic model so it can just sit in a siding.
I have 8’x10’ room sizes , I don’t think that’s big enough to run one of these, and they also are very expensive because I would want the rolling thunder paragon 3 sound amp and subwoofer.
Hopefully BLI make the 844 soon ... I have their 3985 & 4014 ... absolutely love them! ... the Bigboy is a beast!
I hope so also! I have their 3714, and went to Athearn for the 844 not pleased. Hopefully the 4014 is somewhere soon I did not pre order
@@jeffstrains4014 Do you want 4014 with a coal or oil tender? The Train Shop in Santa Clara, CA has a BLI 4014 with oil tender for $585, not sure if it's a second run one or not and they do not sell online but maybe you can call and get it shipped?

@@jeffstrains4014 I had a second gen Athearn FEF and it was junk so returned it. Got a 1st gen on eBay which works great. The connecting rod between drivers is one-piece, a recipe for binding.
God I hope they make an 844, not sure if id want it in UP or in Lionel scheme

It looks amazing only thing I noticed is that the rods are in the same place on the front and back cylinders which if you look at pictures they are in diffrent spots.

That is a HUGE HO engine. But over $500? Wow.
Over 45 years ago the HO Rivorassi plastic model, no smoke, no DCC, no sound, oversized flanges, no cab detail, no lighted boards, no tender light... Was about $75. That's when the same line had a 0-8-0 heavy switcher for 19.95 and a USRA Heavy Pacific for $27.00. I wish it was cheaper, but this is a stunning model RTR.

Great job as usual. Did you notice that the Real 4014 has black hubs on the drivers her other wheels and the Tender has the Silver hub? Got to get the paint out for my Broadway Limited 4014 w/Rolling Thunder. Thanks for sharing! Oh yes, these are really great. I have a couple TRIX as well, but really love the BL.
I'd hold the paint because that wasn't 4014's, tender. It's 3985's. They couldn't convert it to oil in time, so they used 3985's.

I want to see a comparison of the most recent Broadway Limited Imports Big Boy Paragon 3 and the current Athearn Genesis ho scale Big Boy with DCC Sound. I would love to see the pill test for both in the same video.

4014 is officially under steam. He and 844 are on there way to Ogden UT for the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Golden Spike. I’m glad to have my N scale models of 844 (by Kato) and 4014 (by Athearn). What a shame the coal tender big boy second run by Broadway Limited doesn’t have the depleting coal load like the first run.
You even put the auxiliary water tender with its flag waving backwards, just like it happened two days ago with the real thing!

Have you had any issues with the smoke units on your BLI big boys? Mine smoked a ton out of the box, and after a few hours of running the smoke is very thin, sometimes I have to fill it every 5 minutes and pop the bubbles that build up inside it just to get a tiny bit of smoke. Any advice would help.
I've always been curious about the trains with sound but I cant seem to find an answer anywhere. Does the sound come from the train itself or from the controller?
The word "monstrosity" does also mean ugly, just to let you know. The Big Boy is definitely not ugly!

I bought it. €740!!! Nice Sound. Aber 5 Minutes a horrible melted Plastic Smell and no Front Light. I sent it to my Dealer here in Germany and waited 9 Months! Today I put my Boy back on the Tracks, after 5 min. the same Smell. Now I give it completely back. I am very pissed to say it clear.

Is it me or the DCC system, but does the unit seem to start up and stop a little herky jerky. I would expect a more gradual start up and slow down.
I would love to have a train model like this (I can't get it anyway; my model railroad is too small)!

My big boy 4024 get some serious problems when it was running on a track that is not very clean，I can not control it‘s speed but the sound system goes well，until I fix the problem.but it shakes when it is running on low speed :(

I have one but it keeps on stopping on my layout, I cleaned the tracks but the locomotive still randomly stops, and when it stops it's headlights just blink and the sound still works, it stops frequently, it runs longer if it's is going backwards but going forward it will stop sooner, I feel like I might have put an extra drop of smoke fluid in on accident, after that it would randomly stop, but can anyone help me, idk how to fix it!

coal load doesn't deplete any longer but whistle steam seems stronger. Lighting is a little more accurate looking.

What are flying number boards?
unofficial terminology for number boards that are positioned up top of the smoke box. A couple of suggestions;
1. Put light source on the same side as the camera. Can't see as well when it's on the other side.
2. Don't wiggle your pointer. It's unnerving. Rest it on something. I got yelled for doing that at work back in 1978.
3. Drawbar test: Since static friction is higher than sliding friction, locos with wheels spinning can't pull as much. Gradually increase throttle until just before wheels begin to spin and note reading. You'll notice a slight drop as the wheels begin to slip. Modern diesels have computerized slip controls (individually controlled for each axle) that allow just a tiny bit of slip, which actually exceeds the laws of traditional physics.

BLi make nice locos but the whistle on the BigBoys are not very authentic. Maybe BLi will come out with an up to date version now that 4014 is back. I better send Harry a messege on making a Lynn Nystrom car for me.
