very nice locomotive, might have stayed with HO scale if that was out 20 years ago when i gave up on it and switched to O. your son is very cute also, good too see another enthusiasts. reminds me of my own now 22 and 20.
Hi James! Thank you for the wonderful review as always. I really enjoyed it. My friends do as well too. The train show coverage is always great too. Looking forward to more.
The Broadway Limited went from NYC to Chicago and on the return trip it was called The National Limited. I rode that train on it's last run to NYC, boarding it in Harrisburg PA. I even stepped out and rode for a way on the Observation Platform on the last car. Part of the trip I was on was from Harrisburg to Philadelphia and then to NYC
I love the BigBoy steam train! iv always been into my model trains i like to set my one up one day just don't have the room to do it, Awesome layout btw!
Would of liked to of seen more action shots of this running on your layout instead of the same close up bridge shot you always do. Thanks for reviewing this - matt
James, nice review. That's a whole lot of "smoke". Lots on impressive detail which seems to be the the norm for BLI's steam engines. I like the addition of the steaming whistle. I do wish some manufacture could come up with "smoke" that was lighter than air so it wouldn't waft back down onto the engine and layout. Cheers, Kevin
Scale Model Trains & Colorado's Joint Line Try a normal1 or supersmoke. I use that for American Flyer for years. Works good and does not smoke up my little apt. at all.
This is sorta the HO equivalent of the Lionel Vision Line Big Boy. It has some of the same features, most notably the whistle steam smoke effect and the depleting coal load.
My first train was a Lionel "Big Boy" all the options including cattle car with Vibro action. I was only 5 my Dad was a closet train fan and a mean Ole Master Sargent. I had that train till I went to Vietnam and my dumb brother sold it. It was new in 1955.In absolute perfect condition.
Nice review and model. Clearly Broadway Limited got the inspiration for the smoking whistle and depleting coal load from Lionel. Up until now the smoking whistle and depleting coal load was exlusive to Lionel and MTH in O gauge.
James, great video and thank you for the review. I would like to make one note here about the tender. The detail you called a warning label is the tender's builders plate. Hope that helps.
Great Video! Wonderful to see Whistle Steam, Lighted number, classification, and markers on HO scale. And the smoke output rivals the best I've seen out of O Scale. Broadway Limited is really bringing HO to a new level of realism.
you know its funny, i use my home stereo when i know you are doing paragon 3 reviews so i can try to get the full effect, but i didnt realize how deep it sounded in person until recently... i hope they do a lot more stuff with paragon 3 in the future in the diesel department.
Awesome equipment there...I'm a "N-Gauge" man myself. Too bad he's a Raiders fan...but what the heck, his love of trains and passing it along to his son is great!
Great review. It looks like the engine may have to be broken in by running it for a while to hopefully eliminate the binding. I'm still on the fence on getting this engine, just may snap and get in. Your son as gotten big. Time flies.
neat looking loco. I got to see one at Randy's Roundhouse in Lincoln. Couple details: the markers on the tender would only be used in a "light engine" movement. They were not used during normal train operations - apparently BLI wanted some extra colored lights. Second - the cab chatter. "Big Boy" locomotives were in operation BEFORE cab radios became common. The radio chatter is inappropriate for a 4-8-8-4 during their working acreers. Obviously UPP 4014 will have radio gear installed when in goes into excursion service.
You mentioned in the review that the locomotive did not like your curves. It may not be the case. The front 3 drivers were off the rails when you powered up the loco initially. It was an excellent review. I am a PRR modeler so I won't own one. It is an excellent model and a credit to the workmanship that BLI puts into their products. As always your reviews are excellent and informative. Looking forwards to the future ones.
I've been enjoying your reviews for years James. Excellent review of the amazing Broadway Limited Big Boy! For me I find the steam effect completely unrealistic and borderline laughable. Highly subjective, of course. Looking forward to the next review.
I bought this loco 4014 oil version and its a great puller. it pulls my 57 car walthers UP smoothside passenger set with ease. but then again my Athearn Rivarossi and MTH bigboys can also pull the same set quite easily. i never doublehead my locos and I dont have steep inclines on my layout plus my sharpest curve has an 8' radius. I enjoy your reviews James But I'd like to see more of your runbys with the loco at speed.
I had to pick one of these beast up after watching... but I am confused... do I add smoke oil to the "steaming whistle" or just the two smoke stacks? Didnt see anything about it in the manual
So these higher end locomotives don’t come with a transformer/controller? If not, what’s a good one to get and where? I have a Lionel O scale set that came with an 80 watt conventional transformer. Looking to get into ho so obviously learning...thanks for any feedback
I saw the Auxiliary water tenders, how hard is it to find one for a Southern Pacific Daylight? I have 4446 and I wanted a water tender for a reasonable price but I can't find one at all.
It would be nice if future version have the simulated steam coming out of the dynamo and other steam operated appliances as well. Maybe you could talk all the 4014 models that you have and put them end to end and run them as one big cloned run by.
nice review. Now if you can pull it off I would like to see a side by side review with MTH & Broadway limited. Detail, sound, weight & pull. By the way, Did I hear a power hum coming from the Broadway?
Hey JLWii2000, Nicely done on the review. I would like to say one thing here though. The plate toward the front of centipede tender as they are referred to is the builder's tender plate. These tenders have a class just like the locomotives do. I do not remember the class without my book, but I do remember reading about this. I would like to ask you to do something for me in the future. When doing a review of this locomotive of scale, can you please tell us how many rail cars that the ounce pulling test converts to? Just a thought or you could give me the conversion formula and I will convert the 6.8 ounces myself.Once again, thank you for the review. I have 4 of these on order. I hope they will pull a 100 rail cars like the real thing and even better if it pulls more rail cars.Benjamin
I have recently purchased one, it looks great! But I have one doubt! The headlight blinks sometimes, specially when it’s stopped it doesn’t look like it’s a wire problem but I don’t know if it’s normal. I couldn’t fund anything about it online. Do you know something about it? Thanks a lot!
While OO and Ho scale track is the same I am just wondering if HO scale trains will run on my track. Is there anything specific I need to look for when buying?
Hi, do you know how many drops of smoke fluid you added? I put 3-4 drops and blew air down the stacks and mine doesn't smoke as much as yours. It doesn't really have any smoke "pool" around the stacks when stationary either. Did you have to wait a while for the smoke heater to warm up? Thanks!
Very interesting. I have this run of big boy and I also bought the most recent run of the challenger. In his video he shows this pulls almost 7 grams and in the new video the challenger pulls over 11. However my big boy weighs more and pulls way more than the challenger. I am confused. Anyone know whats going on
very nice locomotive, might have stayed with HO scale if that was out 20 years ago when i gave up on it and switched to O. your son is very cute also, good too see another enthusiasts. reminds me of my own now 22 and 20.
Raising our now 9 year old Great-Grandson since birth and it is great seeing your son from so tiny to how big he has grown.
Hi James! Thank you for the wonderful review as always. I really enjoyed it. My friends do as well too. The train show coverage is always great too. Looking forward to more.

Wow, that's a nice loco and tender. I really like your turntable display method to show the attributes on all sides. Cheers, Glenn.
Absolutely gorgeous locomotive! Great review as always.

James, Just ordered one of these! The last one they had on Model Train Stuff. I am SUPER excited to be receiving it soon! :D
Beautiful locomotive. could you add some speed please thanks.
I just got this one. My first Big Boy. So excited to run it
My first train was a Lionel "Big Boy" all the options including cattle car with Vibro action. I was only 5 my Dad was a closet train fan and a mean Ole Master Sargent. I had that train till I went to Vietnam and my dumb brother sold it. It was new in 1955.In absolute perfect condition.

I have fallen in love with the UP Big Boy also

love the locomotive it's nice. it tells u what the next generation of ho steam engines is going to be like. :):)
Watched both reviews and really like the BLI, they did a great job making it look real. And the whistle is *much* more true to the Big Boy.
you know its funny, i use my home stereo when i know you are doing paragon 3 reviews so i can try to get the full effect, but i didnt realize how deep it sounded in person until recently... i hope they do a lot more stuff with paragon 3 in the future in the diesel department.
Tony Fleetwood It's an interesting idea, the problem is that their diesel recordings are absolutely atrocious.
Awesome equipment there...I'm a "N-Gauge" man myself. Too bad he's a Raiders fan...but what the heck, his love of trains and passing it along to his son is great!
OMG it puffs smoke every time the cylinders dump steam!! Thats awesome!
Great review. It looks like the engine may have to be broken in by running it for a while to hopefully eliminate the binding. I'm still on the fence on getting this engine, just may snap and get in. Your son as gotten big. Time flies.

Great review !!! Love the channel
Impressive and you got that message over.
Tell Henry I said hi! great video again Mr.James!
saving up so much to build my own model and maybe one day I could get that big boy.
You mentioned in the review that the locomotive did not like your curves. It may not be the case. The front 3 drivers were off the rails when you powered up the loco initially. Good review, but runbys normally consist of a little more speed, can we have something other than the bridge scene?
Can you please review the new Bachmann ho E7-A and USRA 4-6-2? there are currently no videos of either of them
I saw on the tender of Big Boy was the details of The Oil pumper or something.
Lionel’s Vision Line Big Boy has both the smoking whistle and the depleting coal load features.
Thx James, great review as usual.
So tell me would you get a Broadway Limited Big Boy or the Athearn Genesis Big Boy
Great review!
@12:15 I noticed the front drivers appeared to be off the rails when you started it out.. Nice looking loco, though...
It would be cool if you could at the end of a review video attach a bunch a cars and run it around your layout
When I saw that whistle I beamed from ear to ear. 😀😁
Fun fact: the tender connected to the big boy currently is actually 3985's.
It’s sad that you can no longer get this unit on trainworld
James, did anyone notice that the driving rods on firemans side are in phase, not offset by 90degrees. I looked at video of UP4014 to confirm this.
Say Hi to Ed Dickens, U.P. Steam shop Manager, for the Big Boy 4014. / Cool demo.
• Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
I like this video and your T shirt.
When you have the camera close to the engine, I get an incredible urge to blow on the screen to make the sinking smoke get off of the locomotive...
Beautiful locomotive. Chuffing needs work. Smoke is questionable. Great review. I might get one.
@ 12:18 loco is derailed
Front 2 axles of the front engine.
Haha! Such a noob!
Front 3 Drive Wheels.
We all make mistakes and don't notice them
@@TrainznProgress yes I mean have you seen how tiny the wheels are?
hahahahah! I have two boys I can relate to the hover kid effect :-P Nice review and this thing is epic in person!
Wow, wish I still ran HO just for this engine...
Does it have alot of small plastic parts. Is the rail ,and the piping plastic? Thanks Jeff
How does this compare to MTHs offering?
you should do a video on how to tune cvs for the motor
could you do the southern pacific daylight 4449
Hey JLWii2000 will you be doing a review on the Scale Trains Tier 4 GEVO's?
the link to trainworld doesn't seem to work. or maybe they don't have anymore?
Nice review, thanks again.

Love the steaming whistle! I wish N scale has steam...

wow great engine. great review. thanks
Love BLI and Trix! Wow.
I have recently purchased one, it looks great!

I couldn’t fund anything about it online. Do you know something about it?
Thanks a lot!
you should do a MTH g scale I think that wood be cool!!
at 12:37 the first 4 wheels derailed. Did anyone notice that?
do you need any special controller to control the smoke? or i can do it with NCE powercab? thanks
Are they gonna reintroduce this one this year? I tried to find one last year but they were already sold out
GMTX 2613 I'm also curious. This would go along with my MTH Big Boy 4014 (HO scale) so well.
what ho system do you run with like control and how do you power your layout
While OO and Ho scale track is the same I am just wondering if HO scale trains will run on my track. Is there anything specific I need to look for when buying?
Which is which smokestack do you put the smoke fluid in and do you need to put smoke glued in the whistle
where you bought this please tell me online site.i want to buy it please tell me as early as possible.
its great,ilove it.....
That's amazing!!!
Train Productions by iLoVeSD70Ace35 hey my little bobele is a train
Where did you get those HO Scale Union Pacific Coaches?
love your reviews! how big is your layout?
Hi, do you know how many drops of smoke fluid you added? I put 3-4 drops and blew air down the stacks and mine doesn't smoke as much as yours. It doesn't really have any smoke "pool" around the stacks when stationary either. Did you have to wait a while for the smoke heater to warm up? Thanks!
That is awesome. Thanks for sharing.
I love the broadway big boy Great review too
Very interesting. I have this run of big boy and I also bought the most recent run of the challenger. Hello I just wanted to know if you can join ho track to the ez track
Great video as usual. BLI or MTH??
Smoke comes out of the bottom of mine is that normal I just got it yesterday
Do you know what type of smoke fluid to use and how many drops? Thanks
How many freight cars can it pull same with passenger cars
Is it still available because I wanted to get one of these.
Are the front drivers off the track at 12:02?
Very interesting review overall. Looks like a fun Loco; huge though!
Contrajoe I noticed that too!
Nice Job 👍💪
What is the radius that it can run on
Which category on train world is this engine in
What scale of the big boy is in
where can i buy this big boy locomotive?
Can this loco make it around 18” curves?
I don't get it, how does this loco pull less than the BLI S3 Northern (261)
When Big Boy Runs on DC and it produce smoke?
Are them plastic wheels on the front of it?
