    You have to be the most straight forward and consistent lens reviewer on youtube. You are not mincing words when you say you standardized your format. The work you do is appreciated.

    This lens is one of my most precious collections. I only use it when I need to take nice portrait shots. It is mounted on a Canon T6, 24 megapixels. I bought it 10 years ago new for $,1000 and still looks and works like new

    My favorite crop only lens! This thing lives on my number 2 80D. I use it for nearly everything. The F2.8 aperture on a zoom for APS-C is so nice, it makes things more possible like indoor sports and other gigs. I don't shoot video with mine, though I have tested it and it makes too much noise to be reliable for vlogging I would think.
    I do think it is due for an update though. I would like to see them do the following for a mkII...
    Better IS - current is 3 stop, I think they can do at least 4, maybe even 5. Also, I think they solved the issue with the IS on this lens after a certain point. New models should no longer have the issue.
    Weather Sealing - What is the point of weather sealing cameras like the 80D if there are not going to be any weather sealed lenses to use on it? As it stands one would need to go with the 24-70mm lens for that, and that is jsut not wide enough on a crop. This would likely solve the "dust issue" as well.
    All internal focus - Probably a pipe dream, since even the 24-70mm isn't all internal. A nice dream though!
    Improved optics - Likely jsut an update to the latest glass they are using, a more up to date UD element, and better arrangement of elements for better sharpness. Also ASC coating to help with the CA issue you pointed out. These are basically engineering updates that Canon has been doing for other lenses as well, and would not take much to put into this great lens.
    NANO- USM - This would be the big winner here. I seen you say you would want STM added to this lens in a comment. Going to have to slap a big ol' NO on that. The USM focus makes this lens great for fast action shooting, which was its purpose to begin with. While STM would make it more useful for video it would also make it less so for action shooting. I think the best idea here is nano-USM. I have the 70-300mm and 18-135mm that have it, and am constantly impressed at how speedy they both focus. Tested in video, quiet. Literally the best of both worlds! And Canon seems to have jsut left it behind, giving us only two lenses with it! Please Canon, start building it into lenses like the 17-55mm!
    Better look - Sounds petty, but the current design is really out of date and a little ugly. The 70-300mm and 18-135mm, as well as the 55-250mm STM all have a much better look to them. Big lenses attract big attention, so look good you know?
    I hold my breath Canon, though I don't think they have much interest in making expensive crop only lenses. Which is sad, since I think Sigma and Tamron have both proven there is a market for it. I would love to see a Canon version of the the Sigma F1.8 zooms, both the 18-35mm and the 50-100mm. I jsut don't think Canon sees it the same way as me. They want to get people to buy the cheap camera and then go, "well I need a 6D/5D to do anything good". But they fail twice here. For one, someone looking at a camera for under 1000 bucks isn't even looking at ones that are 2000+. And also, they are not the only game in town for mid-level gear. But if I have a Rebel and 800 bucks, maybe a sweet lens that makes my crop as good for low light as a full frame keeps me with Canon...

      Fair suggestions for the upgrade. A control ring, wider zoom ring and wider focal length too. It can be a unicorn lens now we have the R7 and other APS C mirrorless bodies. Please Canon let’s build this

    • @kevindiaz3459
      @kevindiaz3459 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mvp_kryptonite rumors of an RF-S 16-55mm-ish F2.8 IS USM are around, but nothing official from Canon yet. My guess is it won't be weather sealed but will have several of the wish list (better IS, better lens elements, nanoUSM) with some of the usual garnishment RF lenses have like a control ring. We just have to wait and see. I'd guess price will land somewhere in the range of 1000 USD. If it's most of what I'm hoping for its going into my bag at release.

      @mvp_kryptonite ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kevindiaz3459 that is exactly what I’m looking for. Although my 17-55 is fine, adapting makes it a bit cumbersome (especially with flash) and now I know the IS might give up, it’s time for a replacement

    Thank you Chris! I once had this lens prior to my change to a fullframe camera (Canon 6D). The image quality of this zoom lens is excellent and with a Canon 1200D it was no problem walking around at night in a village in the Alsace and taking pictures handheld from houses etc. illuminated merely by street lights! The image stabilization helped a lot. On daylight its image quality was fantastic as well for the APS-C format. A very versatile lens! Best, Ralf

    I’m a owner of this zoom lens. Several gripe is the noisy IS so I use a external wireless mic for my audio rather then the internal audio on my 7D. The Bokeh is just average. It’s not perfect especially sharpness at 17mm & 55mm. I’m always shooting stills between 24mm, 35mm, 50mm ideally one should be using primes but this lens doesn’t do a bad job. I honesty think the lens is way over priced. It’s hard to justify the investment especially in these days.

    What a great review! Just bought this lens and a Canon EOS 70D in 2019. Much better photos than the 18-55 kit lens. However, it's disappointing for video in terms of sound as the auto-focus noise is overwhelming for the onboard mics. I'm going to try an external body-mounted mic to see if that helps. Otherwise, I'll just keep it for stills and get the a different Canon zoom for videos.

    Love your videos Chris...though I'm a bit confused as to why you highly recommend this lens considering the IS breaking issue and the wobbly video you mention earlier in this review. If it has wobbly video, why do you use it so much for video filming? Maybe I missed something, but could you elaborate further. I'm looking for a good walk around lens but can't seem to find one that is great in every aspect. I am using a Canon 7D and have a budget of around $1200. Thanks.

      Christopher Frost Photography Thanks Chris. Even with it's problems with IS breaking (and dust inside lens issue), would you recommend this lens over any other in the $1000-$1500 range as a standard zoom on a Canon 7D body? Sharpness, blurred background and low light shooting are the 3 most important factors. I would like to shoot live music, but also street photography in lower light situations. My friend wants me to shoot backup at his wedding as well, so it would be nice to find a lens that handles all of these tasks. I've been looking at other lenses but they can't seem to beat this one when it comes to low light and close up shooting. Thanks for any input. Love your videos.

    Been considering between this and the Canon 15-85. It doesn't have the constant 2.8 but I was understanding that it is sharper and has more reliable IS? Video and Landscape shooter here looking to either replace or complement my 18-135 IS STM but the main attraction here that got me interested in the 17-55 is the constant 2.8 aperture and the full time manual focusing ring USM motor. (its hard to manually set infinity focus with the 18-135 STM)

    Hello Christopher, nice to see more quality reviews.
    I would to enquire about the remark about this lens being in your camera bag, then the 15-85mm review appears a short time later. Also with a remark about this lens being in your bag. Though I appreciate the OOF and light advantage of the 2.8. The unreliability and expense of this lens, makes it very hard to justify the purchase.
    I sure would like to know how your thoughts on this..
    I would also like to see a comparison of OOF areas and Bokeh comparing a FF to an APSC camera. I feel so many people outlay decent money expecting great results, yet not achieving what they had hoped for, as the DOF control on APSC and FF, is not mentioned enough, especially when the person buying goes to a "consultant" at their local store... Perhaps DOF control at F1.8, F2.8, and F4 and F5.6 would be enough.. Just an idea..

      If IS is more needed than the aperture, 24-105 f4L.
      If aperture is needed more than IS, 24-70 f2.8L.

    Hi again, Christopher. I've got a comparison question for you regarding the focus ring range on this Canon lens vs. the Sigma 17-50. Is there any more range in the Canon than the Sigma? I purchased a Sigma, but it had focusing issues as it may have gotten "bumped" in shipment, or the firmware might have been outdated. I was instructed to return it and get another copy of the Sigma. I am leaning towards this very similar Canon to add to my bag though, and unfortunately I can't get my hands on either one of them in my locale. As always, I enjoy your reviews and value your input.

    Hi Chris, am going for a trek and am keen on landscapes. I have a Canon 24mm to 105mm f/4 but not a full frame camera. I have a 7D instead. Should I consider getting this 17mm - 55mm for my 7D or just get a full frame Canon 6D for my 24mm - 105mm. Yes the 6D will cost more, but I thought I will need a full frame anyway at some point.

      You don't really need a bright aperture lens or a full-frame camera for landscape work (although they can have slight advantages). If you're looking for one lens for landscape work then the Canon 15-85 is a good choice.

    I traded in my kit lens for the Tamron 17-50mm and loved it at first... then I got to do some shooting for awhile and started to hate it because the focus had to be extremely precise (I like manual) and a lot of my shots came out too blurry and if I did shoot AF, the motor was obnoxiously loud. So, I took that Tamron and kicked it to the curb today with an upgrade to the Canon 17-55mm and I have fallen in love! I might have to switch to AF permanently with this lens, it's so fast and quiet! Do you live in Korea, I saw some footage that I was able to read in this video. I'm going to miss that beastly Tamron lens cap, but the 2.8 aperture more than makes up for it!

    Hi Christopher.
    Thank you for the wonderful reviews.
    I would really appreciate your advice on the below:
    I have a 70D (with the kit lens 18-135mm) and considering to buy the Canon EF-S 17-55mm or the EF-S 15-85mm.
    I find the focal length of 17--55 sufficient and I would really find useful the constant f2.8. My purpose is to upgrade from my kit lens to a better quality one and I will use it for everyday and travel photography. Still, the 17-55 is relatively old model and I don't come across it as often as the 15-85 which makes me a bit skeptical. What would you suggest? Apart from the obvious differences, I think that both lenses overlap each other a lot and I am puzzled by the lack of internet comparisons between the two.
    Again thanks!

  • @yawner

    Chris -- probably an "it depends" question, but if I have the 50mm f/1.8 lens, and primarily use my camera as a walking around camera (for street photography and landscapes) and for video (music videos particularly), would you deem it wiser to pick this up or the 24-105 f/4 L lens? Price point appears to be about the same, but I feel a bit in the weeds with where to go next. My initial thought is the 24-105 would add the most versatility, and I could use the 50mm for any low-light indoor scenarios -- but it might be nice to have the 2.8 with IS. Of course I could be completely off-base. Cheers mate.

      You should get both lenses. The 24-105 for awesome handheld video work in general, and the 50mm f/1.8 for when you're shooting in low light or need an out of focus background :-)

Perhaps we will see if I win this auction, haha. Would you be able to recommend a lens that would be good for what I plan to use it for? I have canons 10-18mm IS stm lens, but it's aperture is at a minimum 4.5 and I just love the sharpness of 2.8 or less. Thank you for replying! I love your reviews and have learned a ton so far!

  • @GeoscienceImaging
    @GeoscienceImaging 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd like to upgrade the kit lens, but this one doesn't seem to provide a whole lot of improvements for the price. The wider aperture is nice, but if you have to stop it down anyway to get a nice sharp image, what's the point of having a wider aperture? I also wish it were STM instead of USM focusing; the USM lenses I've used are not nearly as good at capturing the focus as the STM lenses - is that also your experience? It is an older lens now, maybe they will release an update in the near future.

    Hi Christopher,
    blessings on your work. Your reviews really helped me so much to find my way through the jungle of lenses. Before I buy, here my last (?) question:
    I just got myself the Canon 70d body only and now I want to order lenses. What do i want to do with it? Well, I just finished my second feature length documentary and I will continue this work. So I need lenses mainly for video work (hand-held and tripod), for interviews, to capture performances, and to shoot nature cut aways. Often in low light situations.
    Budget allows 2 lenses. My choice up to now is:
    Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM and
    Canon EF-S 55-250 f 2.8 IS STM
    Good choice? Any other recommendations?
    Thanks so much again.

      The 18-35mm is sharper, but the focus is inconsistent. So much so that it can't be corrected with the dock. Hard to be sharp if the lens is missing focus. But there are people that have had a lot of success with it too. I really want Canon to do their own 18-35mm F1.8 zoom, for that sweet native focus and color science. But I doubt it will ever happen. Maybe for mirrorless....

    I'm having a heck of a time deciding which lens to get along with the 70D and Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8.
    This Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS plus the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, or just the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC alone?
    I'd like a lens that is versatile for video when I can't have the 70D attached to a rig, but also good for outdoor photography when only carrying a single lens. I like the 20ish to 70ish focal length for photo purposes, but I'm not sure if I should lock myself with just the Tamron VC instead of both the Canon and Tamron non-VC.
