- Knights of the Round (1991) by Capcom is is a classic example of a successful and recognizable beat em'up in fantasy reality. As far as the fantasy sub-genre is concerned, it is probably one of the few games that is first associated with this genre next to Golden Axe. The legend of King Arthur is probably known to everyone, but if you don't know, it's about Arthur being recognized as the rightful ruler of Britain after pulling the legendary sword Excalibur from a rock. But taking the throne will not be so easy, and will require a forceful intervention, in which Arthur will be helped by the famous sorcerer Merlin sending to his aid his two devoted knights, Lancelot and Perceval. The game looks really decent thanks to nice backgrounds and detailed sprites, admittedly there could be a little more going on in the backgrounds. The music is not particularly memorable, because after playing the game there was not a single moment to praise a single song that would add so much depth to the gameplay, if you know what I mean. The combat system is very basic, enriched with combinations of attacks with the direction of movement, there is not too much of it, but there is enough to work with. Strikes along with sound effects give a really great sense of satisfaction, so that the fight after a while does not get boring as quickly as in other games of the genre. The game also tries to smuggle in a character leveling system straight from rpg games, where with each level you can see improvements such as on our character's armor or sword. Does it actually change anything or is it just a cosmetic change ? It's hard to say, but for me it's just a cosmetic change to attract players hungry for pretty graphics and keep them around the game longer. Overall Knight of the Rounds is a very decent game, maybe not the best, but definitely worth recommending..... especially that it can be played by 3 people at the same time. If you have a chance to play it, don't hesitate and liberate Britain with your own hands.
