Volkswagen T-Roc (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

- Volkswagen T-Roc is another VW car on the MQB platform. Using this platform means T-Roc has many features previously reserved for models like the Golf or Passat. Some of the systems available on the VW T-Roc put Passat to shame.
As far as external dimensions are concerned, Volkswagen's new crossover slots between the Polo and Golf, although it has a bigger boot. T-Roc’s closest competitors are cars like Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, Opel Mokka. Taking price into account, Volkswagen T-Roc could compete with larger Toyota C-HR or KIA Niro. However bear in mind none of the mass market competitors offers power engines and advanced equipment, like T-Roc does. And these days not many have AWD.

Much better looking than the Honda HRV which has an extremely sluggish engine in the US market.
Anything looks better, than HR-V, which besides being outdated in the tech department is a decent car.
Nice review and at least I hope you where well received by my home country and enjoyed the food and the scenery around.
I love Portugal. Seems like a very friendly, trouble-free place. At least now, when there is less tourists. I even started looking for a place to rent for a couple of weeks with ocean view.
Gotta love Portugal seaside!
At first I was thinking 'man this place really looks like Portugal' and 30 seconds later Lisbon appears :D (i was only hearing during the first minute, so didn't see the bridge)
Marek, would you recommend this car for my grandpa?
He wants to trade in his 10 year old Kia Sorento and he needs something a bit smaller, but still in the SUV-esque segment, but with an AWD system. He is eager to buy the Vitara 1.4 Boosterjet AWD, but I am persuading him into buying the T-Roc , since it's the more desirable brand. In my opinion, Vitara feels cheap and nasty, with poor sound insolation and poor fit and finish. I am yet to test drive the T-Roc, but on first impression, it feels as a quality product in comparison to the Vitara. Would you buy the T- Roc over the Vitara? Do not take into account the money gap (In Croatia, Vitara 1.4 AWD is 7000€ cheaper than the T-Roc TDI 4MOTION).
Thank you!
Let's take a step back, and think about your grandfather's physical health. I don't know how old he is, and how long he plans (will be able) to drive. My grandfather doesn't drive (his 95 this year), but the last 5 years or so his physical condition deteriorated rapidly. The best car size/height for him to get into is something on the lines of VW Golf Sportsvan/BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. Specifically these two cars, because he sits like on a chair, and sills are relatively low. I was surprised how high sills in VW Caddy were, and how difficult it was for him to get in, even though sitting height was just right for him.
So I hope your grandfather will remain physically fit for as long as he lives, but realistically speaking you may want to take the above into consideration, when buying possibly his last car.
Marek Drives I understand you, and from that point of view, I agree. He is 75 years old, very vital and healthy at the moment. If everything goes well, I think he will be able to drive for at least 5 to 7 years. He understands that his reaction times are lower and therefore he would like to have all the important safety features (lane keeping assist, collision prevention systems, parking sensors etc) and AWD on top of that, since he lives at the countryside, and is used to drive SUV-s with somewhat higher ground clearance and commanding view over other traffic. I think that the T - Roc is a good choice and would hold its resale value better than other competitors, especially in Croatia, where you are praised like some kind of a god if you have a german car with a diesel engine, if you understand what I mean. ;)
The use of cheap scratchy plastics throughout are a big disappointment for me, especially when you consider how expensive one could be if you go for the petrol models. Would rather just go for a normal hatch or an suv from the class above.
That's true. I have one right now on my test and Mazda cx3 beside it....I prefer looks and quality of of Mazda's dashboard much more, but t-roc has much more space and storages and everything is well placed
When you drive this car for some time, you forget about that plastic. I think that this very good car 👍🏼. Even mazda isn’t so quality made and also this is VW 🤘
Nice review, thanks. May I ask if it drives better than the larger grandlandX or 3008?
Depends on your definition of "better". In what aspect? They are pretty much the same soulless machines. T-Roc has the best tech, 3008 has the most interesting design, GrandlandX is the most meh.
Big waves in the background!
Yes, there are many surfers in the area.
Portugal 🕶
Nice to see you got some good photo gear again 😀 T-Roc is a bit too much hard plastic it it looks like. And no USB in the back seat? Keep up the good work!
Please advise the specifications for Petrol Engines rated at 1.4 or 1.6 Litres; with their nominated Horse Power and Torque. Also, please advise 4-motion availability and whether manual transmission is available or not. Many Thanks for the interesting review.
I think it's best you consult your local VW dealer. Specifications may differ between countries/continents.
I visited the configurator and came up with 38k Euro for a diesel dsg with the options I would want! Sorry that is way too expensive and the same price as a Mini Countryman or BMW X1, which are far superior to this thing.
I'd stick to 1.5 TSI.
Good review Marek
Hello,
thanks for all the suv videos really been spending a lot of time watching them.
went to test drive the Troc and the Peugeot 3008 like em both.
Can u give any guidance?
Really can not make a decision...
thanks in advance!
3008 is a larger car. Depends on how you're planning to use the car, how many people will travel in it, how much luggage you need to carry...
Nice camera shots!
I prefer KIA Sportage 1.7 CRDI 6-speed manual as a value of money.......Apparently big enough for family and not so expensive as VW or even Hyundai....(at least in my country) PS Thanks for Your review Marek
How noisy the troc on rough road? Looking for a quiet car.
Depends on your definition of rough road and quiet car. There are a lot of factors, such as tires, suspension, general sound proofing. I'd say this is average for the segment, but if you want super quiet, you should be looking as something much more expensive.
When it will came in India....
amazing location Marek!! Why is VW not able to offer a Hybrid T-ROC? Assistant Systems are important, but for all you have to pay a lot by VW. So it is a Golf with "normal" ground clearance :) I´ll stay with my Qashqai
VW and some other brands made a promise to introduce hybrid and electric versions of most of their models in the near future. This is the official version.
However I recently spoke with some people from BMW, and they said all these promises made by top managers and politicians sound nice, but are not very realistic, because in the end somebody has to buy these cars, and so far demand is far from economically viable.
Nice review.
Marek would you recommend this car to a couple with a baby?
If not,do you maybe have any suggestions which 1.6 diesel SUV would be good for us?
Thank you.

I suggest you try and fit whatever stroller/buggy you have in the boot. This will answer your question.
These are made in my home country Portugal. There was a big strike there not so long ago, I wonder how they managed to build them fast enough for such press releases. Don't expect something durable or reliable from such factory on strike conditions...
What was the strike about? Money, jobs, working hours?
I know VW made Scirocco there, and Scirocco is getting the axe at the end of the year, so T-Roc will keep the factory running.
They don't want to work every saturday during full 2 or 3 years of peak production of the model. They don't mind doing it by rotative shifts, but the factory wants everyone working all saturdays during that time. The strike is over nowadays, lasted only 1 or 2 days but was enough to delay a lot the production of the model. The factory also builds the VW Sharan and Seat Alhambra, but those aren't big sellers nowadays.
I wonder how "totally different" this car is from Skoda Spaceback Scoutline? Especially the newest model year... I would hazard a guess that Skoda is slightly simpler and less refined, but still.
Spaceback is a fancy name for a station wagon, and T-Roc is a glorified SUV :)
You win. I propose we meet in the middle and instead of double quotes use single quotes. These cars are 'totally different' :-).
Hi,may i know wether the interior space is bigger than hrv or not?
What is the ground clearance ?
I wondered about that too, but VW doesn't specify it, and my question got lost somewhere along the evening.
161mm, IIRC
Do you know the name of the Blue paint as it doesn't match the two blues in the UK brochure
It's Ravenna Blue.
Thanks, I thought that was the colour, looks much lighter in the online Volkswagen brochure, great review
How does the DSG gearbox perform? it is smooth or does it jitters ?
It's smooth. At least when new :)
What would you bay t roc 1.0 or toyota chr 1.2 with similar equipment?
Depends on the equipment. VW offers more and better tech, though probably not with 1.0 TSI. Toyota is better to drive, but definitely underpowered.
Fix the annoying jumping sound
Makes the Audi q2 look drab and boxy
LADA Vesta SW Cross ;-)
It looks like Fiat Tipo on steroids.
Actually I miss Russian cars. Black Wolga was THE gangsta (or rather secret police) car back in the day.
Advanced tech+customisation+reliabilty and better built quality+cheaper price=Hyundai Kona
An other arrogant looking SUV, I'd always prefere an estate. Driver aids are a disease! Nice review though
Vw still uses yogurt cup quality plastic, which will rattel in few months.... I drive a passat and I never had so many squiks and rattels in a car before... Shame on you vw... And at this prices...
Actually I just drove Crossland X for 300 km, and it has the same hard plastics on the doors. Much less tech though.
OK, but what about the price difference? As I can see T-Roc easily goes in high thirties even forties, isn't that little too much for basically B SUV segment?
Right now I'm driving a C3 Aircross, which is more expensive than Crossland and Stonic, up there with VW. It doesn't have all the cool tech, but it looks cool, and I would buy it just for the looks :)
hyundai kona still the best the price of this is very high!
Seems after dieselgate VW horses become like other brands ponyies...And no more soft touch plastic for dashboard fetishist...What a shame....🤔
Incredibly cheap interior
In any small Vw group car since the diesel gate, even in the Audi A1! It's a shame for a german brand.
So what if it’s for cheap plastic.
High price
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Rather have a GOLF to be fair!
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
So they fix a piece of black plastic on the door so you can't see the metal, then paint a piece of plastic body colour and place it on top of that, what is the point? Dumb car.
It's part of sound insulation. And you wouldn't want to touch hot metal in the summer.
Thank you, I never found the metal in cars that hot to touch in a car, though leather seats are another matter ;)
I have driven a few VWs and I do find this T-Roc an especially cynical piece of marketing.
Just curious between this and a Golf SV which do you think is the better car? They seem to be at the same price point.
Golf SV is the more sensible choice for a family, but also for older people. I use my 96-year old grandfather as a benchmark. If a car is too low, he has to "fall" on the seat, and he can't get out. If the car is too high, he needs to use his hands to pull the legs in. Cars like Golf SV and BMW 2 AT are just the right height for him.
Terrible design, very bad engines, terrible automatic gearbox, stupidly expensive, everything that is expected of a design coming from the VW group, I hope they sell many, because they are manufactured in Portugal, and I am Portuguese, but I would never buy anything from the VW group.
