Top Performers' Rejections From NYC's Top Art School Spark Outrage | NBC New York I-Team

  • At the city’s top performing arts high school - Fiorello H. LaGuardia - auditions have traditionally mattered most. But numerous insiders said new, tougher academic standards at the Lincoln Center area school are causing some of the city’s most talented performers to be rejected.
The new policies are sparking a debate among staff, students and alumni: Should and do audition scores now play second fiddle to academics?
Nataly Santiago is a talented dancer. At age 19, she now performs with pop-star Janet Jackson. Her mission as a child was to get into LaGuardia.
“I had my heart set on it. I just kept training,” Santiago said.
But when she got that crucial letter from LaGuardia, there was bad news.
“I was denied at LaGuardia and my heart sank to my stomach. Like it was like a god-awful feeling,” Santiago said.
Sources inside LaGuardia tell the I-Team that in 2014, Santiago scored a “100” in her audition - a perfect score. Several students and faculty said a middle school student getting a perfect audition score is like winning a medal at the Olympics - a tremendous accomplishment and a sign of potential greatness.

Other than that, in the drama departments, when a play is supposed to be Asian, Arabic, etc., it mostly stars white actors and singers.
It's a huge pet peeve we LaGuardia students have yet the faculty doesn't really address it.
When I was involved in making a poster for a Cinderelle (Hammerstein and Rogers) play, the faculty wanted Cinderella (who happened to be POC) to run away from something.
Don't blame me, I was told what I was supposed to do, but yet that poster caused outrage among African-American students.
And there are a lot of other posters; that particular one was sadly chosen by the faculty.
Some faculty members are racist. Some students too. There was an Instagram page that posts POC's experience here in LaGuardia, from any year, that peaked during the BLM movement.

No excuses for 10 absents? If it were a family thing or sickness, she could of got the absents erase beforehand. There are other schools for art if you don't get into LaGuardia. I graduated as a dance major in 2000. That was never an issue. However, I have always kept in contact with a teacher there who told me how much these audition process has changed... Probably around 2015... I remember my late dance teacher talked about the young man who she thought was too talented to let go along with other teachers. I remember telling my late teachers how upsetting the new system is because as a student of the performing arts, you will have to miss days if you have performances or rehearsals, or just life. That's just being human.
It's all about how funding. All about money. Fame school ideals are long gone.

There is a very big wall to scale when it comes to breaking through and being highly successful in your craft. The competition is very tough. However, until you get that break, you have to get accepted to college or earn a living. When I went, you had to have an 85 average and pass 2 tests to be accepted...on top of your audition (class of '93). It's being realistic. Education was placed equal to your craft...and I think it should continue to be that way so that kids can find success either way.

    • @46foryounger

It’s a myth that the old way didn’t expect students to keep their grades. That’s not the case at all but it didn’t stop people from getting into the school that have the talent once you were in the school though you had to maintain a certain average in your academics so that’s absolute bullshit. There’s no way that somebody who has more artistic ability should not get into the school where as somebody who has less artistic ability gets in due to high grades. For some people that may be the only thing that they’re really good at and they’ve missed that opportunity that principal needs to go to Stuyvesant or Brooklyn Tech and be a principal in an academic school.

    • @sweettreatsoverload4296

One "c" in elementary school should never stop you from getting into a school. This principal abused the purpose of this school. This schools purpose was the arts instead it became about grades. I understand that you need great grades. Which she had, there needs to be a balance. Even in college support is given to those in sports so that they can maintain their grades.

Just because it's an art school doesn't mean you don't have to work hard on academic subjects. I go to this school and I'm a Hispanic with a lower social status. It's very competitive I know that. I have many friends that didn't get into this school. You can have a lot of talent but you're not the only one. Let's say if you, a talented musician or dancer or actor, auditioned and got in, chances are you took the place of another talented musician, dancer, or actor.

    • @46foryounger
      @46foryounger ปีที่แล้ว +1

The old PA Had a standard of maintaining a 75 grade average is what my brothers told me but it didn’t effect your ability to audition and get in if you had talent and it shouldn’t this is an arts school and there are many people who are not “traditionally smart” but art geniuses in art and they serve their communities with their talents. It’s unacceptable for a student with a great gift to be turned away from this chance to succeed as is shown in the interviews with graduates.

I'm 37 now but I auditioned for them in 7th grade and in 8th grade and I didn't get in. At that time I played the alto saxophone, clarinet, and piano. I was reading and writing music notes, and composing. At the time Thomas Semanski (RIP) was my mentor and teacher in junior high school and he was stunned I didn't make it in. In junior high school I was in a sub honor class, meaning I was a A and B student but math was my C grade that kept me out of the honor course and that's when Laguardia passed on me. Since then, I went on to Arts and Business High School. Went to trade school to get my associates degree, and then went on to get my B.A in political Science, and a Masters in Social Science. Had I went to that school, I would have continued a career in music but it was so discouraging for me at the time, but now I could sit back and laugh about it lol.

I went in to audition for this school in 1982. When my turn came up, I asked if I could play “Rise” by Herb Alpert. Instead she asked me to hum to her finger taps. Because I wasn’t a hummer, I was an alto saxophone player. My teacher at JHS 162 didn’t teach us how to hum. He taught us how to play our assigned instruments. We practiced diligently before each variety show. Anyway, I wasn’t accepted because of my inability to HUM. I played in the JHS 162 Willoughby Stings Band for four years. I played congas on and off since 1984. Then I played with two different bands from 2011-2014. I can ‘t help but wonder, “What could have been?”. I could’ve been a contender… unfortunately, I didn’t understand the assignment.

I agree.

As someone who goes to LaG, we put the arts over the academics. Academics do help with credits and for college, but our major studio have double the credit of academics.
I mean. you can have economics and english that are 1 credit each. Studios like Vocal 1 and 2, Opera, Digital Media, Painting, Show Dance, etc. have 2 credits. They weigh more.
We choose our electives and they don't require a certain GPA score. IN fact, having an studio elective is required. Having an academic elective is optional, like AP Human Geography for example. The only classes that require a certain GPA are AP classes.

Every school-elementary, middle, and high school has attendance policies. Natalie knew that. She’s definitely very talented! If this door was closed, she can find another school. It’s not the end of the world. But the answer is not to lower standards.

I disagree- it sounded like some of the students were actively working in the field before they applied and got rejected. I would accept students who are actively auditioning for paid roles or going on tours to have a few absences out of necessity of their craft.
Additionally, school doesn’t always allow too much balance. Can you imagine you’re studying academics full time AND studying a performance craft full time? That’s a lot to handle at a young age, and it takes years to finally figure out the balance. How are we expecting people younger than 7th grade age to have better work-life balance than adults?
Part of a school’s responsibility is to teach, right? They shouldn’t only be taking in the absolutely perfect kids who already know everything. They can take in these top performers and teach them methods for balancing performance and academics. They can teach these kids that what they learn academically can help them be better performers in ways they’d probably never have imagined.
It’s a shame to me that a performance art school doesn’t acknowledge that intelligence comes in different forms.

Why would you give the spot to a student with low grades, low attendance, and talent when you can give the spot to the student with high attendance, high grade and talent? Really and more important the country should be funding The Arts for all public schools, students shouldn't have to compete to become well rounded individuals. As unfair as it is, a principal is not going to make more work for themselves or have the school they have been assigned to go down in ranks which is probably why she set that standard?

The school is for performing arts which should not mandate stellar grades over talent. One c should not affect you. The point of the school is preforming arts. Why should a no talent student get a stop in a top preforming arts school. They have no chance of beginning in the arts after they leave because they are not gifted in arts. If the school was focused on academics then grades should come first. The principal should have been fired because she didn't understand the purpose of the school. Talent then grades. Preforming arts is the focus, talent then grades. The young lady was talented, you have no idea why she missed ten days from school. The purpose of the school was lost.

You sound very ignorant and like someone who doesn’t know anything about the arts or the standards of the school prior to this principal.. The history of the school is legendary and this is a specialized school just like Stuyvesant or Brooklyn Tech when you go to Stuyvesant you need certain academic accolades to get in there because that is what the school is about and for anybody that knows I’m class of 88 about the standards of this school prior to this principal you had to maintain your academic standard as well once you got in the school but it didn’t stop you from getting in the school come on this kid had one C and it got denied because they had one C this is ridiculous and it’s grotesque and like Ben is saying in this interview he was a kid who was struggling and if it wasn’t for that school he’d never be where he is today artists are intelligent and capable in a different way not everybody is talented in the same way some people are academically talented and some people are artistically talented and that’s a school for the arts. So do your research before you make a comment like that because this principal should’ve never been at that school if she wants academic excellence she needs to go to Stuyvesant or Brooklyn tech and I said before we had to maintain a certain academic average as well so it wasn’t like our academics weren’t important but the focus of the school and the specialization of the school is on the arts.

A school whose name and fame is centered around art, should not be focusing on grades over talent. That principal is probably jealous because she could never get into the school with her talent. • @bogusshmogus1670
      @bogusshmogus1670 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That argument falls apart when you consider that highly competitive individuals may not be highly competitive in every area education deems necessary nor is there any reason to assume they should or would have to be as the real world generally values highly skilled specialists over generalists
I get told I’m super intelligent, etc every day and that I should be in college, writing papers, a lawyer, etc. (may still go) I didn’t get into college because I had bad math grades because I despise being forced to learn something without proper reasoning to its value in my life. I do not necessarily despise math itself though, just being forced to learn it with no explanation as to its usefulness. Given the advent of the internet and calculators.
If you get sent to the principals office for asking the teacher what tangible value this information has, that is a failure on the part of the school as, as the student it is not your responsibility to be motivated to learn. In a compulsory school system, it is the schools responsibility to incentivize you as your only alternative is literally jail time. You are in effect being forced into a system that will measure your value on how much you can blindly conform to its expectations and then punished for questioning what actual value those expectations have on your life.
As a student who is being forced to attend school the least the school can do is rationally explain what and why they are learning what they are as well as have a clear explanation for how the information adds to the student ability have a more fulfilling life. As well as determine how to best motivate those students to want to learn the information.
This should be a basic requirement for any system of compulsory schooling. The reason this is not done is because most schools are not interested primarily in educating and preparing children for success in the real world but by the standards which keep their funding. Given the fact that the government forces kids to go to school none of this matters. These changes will never occur because their will always be an endless supply of students forced at gun point to attend regardless of whether or not the schools are helping them.
So yeah it’s not hard to get an 80 if you are comfortable being forced at gun point to abide by a standard which doesn’t necessarily reflect any actual value beyond a piece of paper which says you are very good at complying with authorities.

why would it be 80? shouldn't it actually be 70? If that's true I would hope none of the workers there get any time off because I'm sure they count excused absences. Just as much there is PTO and sick days. students should be entitled to the same and not counted against them. Some don't even consider being a student a job until they see how those benefits work.
plus attendance really depends.... I feel like a lot of Hight school standards make no sense. Even in collage all the professors really care about is if you retain information and pass the exams let alone attendance in the course work. Some just do better with self-study and I think a ton of student can relate depending on what they study. majority of arts are self-study.
