i am on lorazepam 1 mg. i take it every other night for years and probably i am dependent on it. i take it at night cause i have chronic insomnia. Your information is great, but i am scared of insomnia because it makes me very measurable the next day so i continue but i want to get off of that med.
I started getting up and laughing at anything that made me laugh. It took 4-6 months, but eventually I could stop ruminating and fretting. Now I am able to lie in bed and listen to guided meditations or audiobooks. I still wake up often, but I don’t wig out like I used to.
I slept like a baby for 30 years and then chronic illness hit. I've been in similar situations to the coach you mentioned, so it's really good to hear that she's fully recovered and can sleep well now 🙌🏼!
It's unfortunate when chronic illness disrupts our sleep patterns, but it's also encouraging to hear success stories of recovery and improved sleep. I'm glad you found inspiration in our coach's story, and I hope it gives you hope for your own journey. Keep persevering, and may you find restful sleep again!
Sleep disturbance is a strange symptom of CFS. It’s harder getting to sleep, staying asleep and waking up between 3am-6am sucks. Waking up/getting out of bed each morning is tough too. We forget what it feels like to wake up refreshed. For the past 18 months I’ve unsuccessfully tried setting an alarm to wake up but eventually just wake up when my body allows me to. There is a saying with CFS, your body tells you what to do, not the other way around which is quite true.
It's sad to hear that because I can relate all too well. It's true that sleep disturbances are a common and challenging symptom of CFS. It's very important to listen to your body's signals and allow yourself to wake up naturally, as setting alarms may not be effective. It's crucial to prioritize rest and sleep and taking necessary steps to prioritize sleep can help improve your overall well-being and speed up recovery!
The best video ever about insomnia! Ive been suffering for 4 years. My mind wont shut off. Im 54 and exhsusted. My family doesnt understand. Thank you for alk the information!!!
Wow insomnia has always been the most dreadful thing to me . Exactly as you described since childhood i just couldnt sleep . I guess this plays a huge role in me getting CFS. 😢 Thank you for this video. Surely could relate to each and everything you spoke about!
I'm sorry to hear that insomnia has been a significant struggle for you since childhood Afsha. It's tough when sleep difficulties impact our overall well-being. What worked for me guys was definitely listening to something that gave me comfort. Guilty pleasure of mines, there’s a SpongeBob playlist on TH-cam with all their background music. And it gives me nostalgia and puts me right to sleep. Also white noise is great for REM sleep
That's fantastic to hear! Finding something that brings you comfort and helps you relax is a wonderful strategy for improving your sleep. It's great that you've discovered a guilty pleasure that helps you. Nostalgic and familiar sounds surely have a calming effect and contribute to a sense of relaxation, making it easier for you to drift off to sleep. Thanks for sharing
Honestly such an amazing video, I resonated with everything you said. I was hospitalised last week due to sleep deprivation and am currently on day 4 of no sleep, and I think I'd be a lot worse off if I hadn't found your videos. They are pretty much the only thing keeping me going. Thank you so much for taking the time to talk about this, you're helping a lot of people :)
I have had the feeling of dreaming or something while I am awake and it’s such a weird feeling and makes you feel like you are losing it. I have also closed my eyes and seen flashes of different images like my mind is trying to process the events of the day.

omg i have the exact same thing, only if i overdo myself though. I feel like I fall asleep but im dreaming non stop and when i wake up it feels like ive been awake the whole time but i was dreaming.
My jolting and adrenaline dumps have been utterly debilitating since covid. I can’t sleep most nights. I had to go to the hospital too to get sleep aids after weeks of almost no sleep, most sleep aids did nothing I tried a bunch. I was doing better for a while and now it’s terrible again.
My issue is that I tend to sleep best between 4 a.m. and noon. It's still disturbed sleep and I can't sleep this long every night but this tends to be when my body wants to sleep. The problem is that I live alone, am housebound and so have to rely on getting everything I need delivered which means I often need to be awake by 9 a.m. Delivery times are often approximate which means I could be waiting all day for something to arrive and if I miss the delivery it means I'll have to repeat the process the following day when delivery is reattempted. Just knowing that I'll have to be awake early is enough to stop me from sleeping. It's like I can't relax if I know that I can't allow my body do what it needs to do when it needs to do it. If I go to bed before midnight I'll sleep for a couple of hours and then be awake all night. Also daytime noise can be intrusive. Most normal everyday neighbour noise can be drowned out with noise cancelling headphones and earplugs but at the moment there are people doing repairs on the building next door and power tools, cement mixers etc. cannot be drowned out no matter what devices I use. Sometimes they start at 7 a.m. It drives me nuts not being able to sleep at night (since usually all is quiet at night except for the odd party my inconsiderate neighbours throw). I've read that the sleep-wake cycle in those with CFS tends to be reversed and I used to be a night owl even before getting CFS.
I think this is called Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome... I'm the same as you where if I know i need to get up early, I won't sleep, then it takes me 2 or 3 good sleeps afterwards to recover from that... it sucks..

WOAH. I just clicked on this video and clicked in at around 3:30 and just WOW. I relate to this so much and will have to watch the rest of the video later. Just stumbled across your channel and really relating to this content
I’ve been dealing with insomnia from my recent booster shot. I had a list of painful symptoms and sleep disorders that occurred drove me crazy. C virus infections can also cause insomnia. In 2020s sleep disorders are on the rise and I know why.
@@cfsrecovery perfect healthy sleep before my injection but since mid December 2023. The first two months were bad because I couldn’t sleep, leaving with being up for 40 hours.
@dot1910 this happened to me after my second injection. Going on two and a half years of insomnia. Never had any issues before. Even during menopause I never had insomnia.
Miguel, thank you so much for video about insomnia. I suffer from Insomnia for 15 years and I think that I have cfs for all those years, But I only realized that about two years ago when I started to search on yut tube about whats wrong with me. My insomnia is so bad that it drives me crazy. I usually get 2 or 3 hours of sleep, sometimes I get no sleep at all. If I sleep for 5 or 6 hours I think I am in heaven. So it is so help full to listen to such videos about insomnia. I have one very big problem at night. When I lay in my bed I fell a strong buzzing sensation in my body, in my feet I feel tinkling and pain, its some kind of neuropathy. And in my head I hear a noise like a car engine. It feels like my whole body is going completly crazy... Is there someone Who have these kind of strange sensations? How you help your self? I do a lot of meditation and relaxation during the day and night, which helps a little.. But the buzzing in the body doesnt go away... I wish all of you Who have insomnia to finally start to have a good night sleep.
I have the body buzzing neuropathic type pain too, it never stops, it moves between a 5/10 and a 10/10. I have learned from Miguel about telling myself it's just my nervous system and thinking calm thoughts to soothe it, to retrain it. It's the hypersensitive nervous system activated. Wishing you well, kindred spirit. We're all on this journey together.
Yes, I have that as well. That was actually one of my very first symptoms to present along with fasciculations/cramping and neuropathic pain. I have also been suffering from various parasomnia disruptions such as insomnia, night terrors, teeth grinding, talking, crying, laughing in my sleep, exploding head syndrome and more since childhood. I most recently developed severe sleep vertigo and hypnic jerks that make it literally impossible to sleep for days on end. I just got back from the emergency room because I haven’t slept in so many days although I am on multiple medications to treat the insomnia and get the jerks under control. They are driven by sleep deprivation. Has anyone one out there had any success getting them under control besides using Clonazepam? I spend various hours a day doing brain rewiring exercises, meditating, practicing mind body techniques and the list goes on. So far, no success with the insomnia. I would love to hear if any of you have been able to get them under control.
@@kellyparks9215 It sounds like a very intense experience for you. I myself am unable to speak about this to this degree but I know there are sleep coaches out there that may be able to help. I'm just about to see an EMDR therapist to deal with deep unresolved issues, ie C-PTSD, I wonder if this sort of thing is impacting your sleep, such as your psyche trying to get your attention from a deeper level. Could be worth exploring. Wishing you so very well with it.
Thanks for your reply. I definitely agree that something is going on deep in the subconscious. It just started so young for me and I had an incredibly loving and nourishing mother so it’s hard to understand what could be causing it. I feel like I entered the world like this and question whether it had to do with the fact that my delivery was a very stressful event and that I was born jaundice meaning my mom couldn’t hold me directly after birth. I also had horrible ear infections throughout childhood and surgery. But seriously, who knows. I think there are so many factors such as epigenetics, personality, generational trauma and so forth. I would love to hear how your EMDR therapy goes. I have heard of a few people who have successfully treated their insomnia and PTSD with it. I am wishing you the best of luck with it and hope someday insomnia can belong to your past.
Have had trouble getting to sleep and waking a lot. I tend to listen to podcasts in bed, as I have tinnitus too and its not then so noticeable. But if I cant go back to sleep after a good while I'll get up and have a snack ( and yes, sometimes bad acrolling!).
Do you have any videos of the opposite? I feel like I need to sleep the entire day.. and I’m not sure if that’s something I should do or not. As in, after I sleep for 10-12 hours I feel like I haven’t slept at all. Legs and body very tired. I feel like I need to wake up and shower and then sleep again. Is “pushing” through the day the best you can within reason or taking naps throughout the day better? I know sleeping too much during the day affects your night time sleep but it’s tough to know
So good thank you! I already try this, try to stay in bed relax following my breath, reminding myself the second best thing after sleep is deep rest. It's a good advice to not be too focused on not getting up, yes, sometimes it's easier to get calm when i make a tea and just sit in the dark and watch the moon or something. For me it's sometimes so frustrating because i have 2 weeks in a row with nearly no insomnia and then i even don't think about it, and then it comes again and hits me unprepared, so the first nights i don't think about staying calm anymore but totaly run into the trap of frustration. I have insomnia since childhood, too... So i can't imagine what a life without being worried about how i will sleep when there is an appointment the next day or i sleep in an other bed, not home... how did you handle insomnia when you had appointments the next day? Did you cancle them, as you would in an AP? Or did you do for it as it doesn't make insomnia worse as you doesn't let it rule your life? I feel unsure about that. And did your insomnia vanish with your recovery? Or is it still there as it was always?
Yes I do Viviane. Thanks for following through and watching my content. I hope it gives you the necessary tips and strategies you can keep applying to your own recovery journey!
Hey, just want to say i can relate. Ah, what a challenge it is to deal with. I have worries about sleep as a natural part of my life now..like plans as you mention..or teavel.. I also am curios about the best approach to this.. to try to live as normal, or to adjust etc. Still not sure. In mynlife i can see both can have positive effect on my sleep. But what i see clearly is that parenting myself through the tough nights is good. Be caring and super loving to the frustrated me. But also telling her that I'm still safe etc. And making the best of it.. Also knowing this is not about the sleep actually.. that is just the symptom. It is about my nervous system...so rather than trying to control my sleep, i can just let it be, and focus on how i can practice feeling safe during the day. It means for me to not try to get rid of my symptoms and anxiety. Rather befriending it, befriemy life now, as weird and challenging and neautifully raw it is.. What helps you on your journey? ..no pressure to answer 😊

I can fall asleep ok, sleep for the 2-3 hours then awake all night long with waves of doom and gloom ongoing not allowing me to fall asleep again. Oh, this is a really bad place to be. I had the same in 2020 when I got longcovid. I can now sleep 5-6 hours with the first 3-4 the best. This is what worked for me if you want to try it. 1. Immunebooster with vit d3, b1 and zinc. 2. Calcium magnesium supplement. 3. A herbal supplement called stress no more. * I use these after dinner and after my midnight snack at least 6 hours after dinner. 4. A multivitamin, because I could not eat a lot of foods 5. A Vit B complex and another vit b supplement for certain symptoms my dr prescribed * I use the above after breakfast. 7. After slowly adding green vegetables with the help of activated charcoal I started eating a small to medium size clove of garlic with breakfast. This has given me deep sleep for the first time in 3,5 years. Ad lastly as Miguel said try to relax about it. Most difficult thing to do, I know.
@briechilli4496 I did not really coped well, but I survived. I also had this crazy mind symptom like my brain would catch a thought and be like a broken record, repeating this one thought over and over and over. I also got really irritated and tired listening, but I could handle visual stimulation, so I watched quite a lot of videos about me/cfs in the beginning, but now I watch relaxing or funny TV series to distract my mind and help my nervous system to relax. I need to say that I added the supplements above one at a time to see how my body handles it and not everything at once. I hope you find some relieve soon and great health later.
I love your videos and have managed to get from completely bedbound to walking and driving around freely! However, I am still sleeping a lot (roughly 9-10 hours most nights and up to 13 hours if I have a more strenuous day) - do you know why or have any tips for this? I don’t think I can start work till I’m awake enough hours of the day aha!

What i found very interesting and i am having insomnia for 4 months now: in the night the brain do not want to sleep because danger "could harm us". Then why it wants to sleep all day long? There could be danger too. That does not make sence to me. Fighting the whole day against feeling sleepy because if i sleep at the Day there is never a chance sleeping at night, so at the Day fighting against fatigue and at the night "fighting" staying calm against insomnia. Maybe i should live vice versah, maybe i can do a lot more living at night and sleeping the whole day. Maybe then i am making progress
blood work to rule out viral infections, mold toxicity, etc. brain scans to rule out neurological issues. stuff like that. if all your blood work comes back normal and scans are normal, it’s possible you have a dysregulated nervous system from unresolved trauma, PTSD, accumulated stress, etc.
You are my hero!!!!! Thanks to you i have finally hope to overcome this! I feel so much better after watching your stuff and you already changed a lot in my brain! Do you ever thought about using psychodelics to grow your nerves? Since it can enchance the neuroplaticity A LOT! Thank you for your for your work! ❤

Let's continue working towards better health and overcoming the challenges. Take care! ❤
I'm always awake all night cause I feel like I can rest when the world around me is asleep but everyone keeps saying I shouldn't have that sleeping schedule and it's bad for your health. It definitely messes with the day life since I wake up late afternoon but I do sleep pretty well in this schedule and every time I try to change it I my immune system goes out the window and I can't eat or digest anything (I'm already underweight) so I stay with the night time schedule. If anyone knows what could help solve this please share. Thankyou.
I heard that if you want to change your sleep schedule, do it very slowly. Change your bedtime by 10-15 minutes earlier for at least a week, then another 10-15 minutes the next time. My sister used this with success
Very interesting. I can totally related to what you are saying about control. I have the same issue to the point where I would not even fall asleep in a plane just to have a sense of control over it. I have chronic fatigue for years but recently have had complete loss of sleep and i dont know what to do. It's like I lost the ability from moving from the state of being awake to a sleep state.
A lot of the symptoms you don't need to do anything, you just need to leave them be and they go away on their own! I'm 5'8. It's important to note that while sleep is a factor in growth, it's not the sole determinant of height. Genetics, nutrition, overall health, and environmental factors also play significant roles in determining an individual's height. 😉
I have being batling this for 11 month now after my big crush but i realize this started a long time ago and insomnia is terri le i just want to sleep without feeling my wired legs and solarplex i go for walks and try to go to my church but when i do that i pay dearly
Hey Miguel, I was wondering if having shocks like electricity running through your chest waking you up when sleeping is a part of CFS? I started experiencing that last night and was trying my best to divert my thoughts, I started worrying but then told myself repeatedly that it’s just my nervous system.
Kudos for reminding yourself! What you're feeling is common, nothing to worry about. It's one of those many symptoms that you throw under the umbrella of "hypersensitive nervous system issue" As long as you don't mentally panic it'll just go away and pop up here and there. A big thing with recovery is being able to separate physical anxiety/panic in the body and mental anxiety/panic, the physical and mental stress feed off each other.
Worries of all sorts including metaphysical and esoteric wild thoughts are thick and wild in CFS brains. We go to places most people don’t . Our “control” is so minimal in so many areas , we are confused constantly about our bodies and our place in the world.. Brains on hyperdrive in unhelpful directions at times . Uuugghhh
Hey have your heard from anyone that feels like like the never really sleep. I feel like I’m always slightly awake at all times but times is moving faster. Almost like I’m just thinking but sometimes I’ll drift off into very vivid dreams but never have deep sleep.
Yes, many with CFS experience that feeling of never truly sleeping. Vivid dreams and light sleep can be common. You're not alone in this! Is this the only symptom you're currently experiencing?
@@cfsrecovery no I have a ton of symptoms. Muscle twitching, bloating/ burning in stomach, itchy skin, nasal congestion, adrenaline rushes, jerks. I don’t really feel the fatigue side of things though I almost never get tired although I feel foggy mentally at times
cannabis is sadly the only thing that works for my insomnia. after 6 years of losing the majority of my life, i managed to get a prescription for cannabis. This might not work for everyone and maybe its not a long term solution, but it has greatly improved my quality of life and given me enough sleep to interact with my kids instead of being an exhausted sleep deprived mess.
Yes, social anxiety can contribute to insomnia. In someone with a hyper-sensitive nervous system, these symptoms can be more pronounced and more easily triggered. This can lead to a cycle where emotional distress leads to worsening neurological symptoms, which can in turn lead to further emotional distress.
The only thing doctors were helpful with during my cfs is my insomnia. Small dosage of fluvoxamine -and I'm able to sleep through the night. Nothing else worked. Before that I was barely able to sleep for 2 hours at a time and I was going crazy. Too bad doctors can't help me with any of my other symptoms and I have to just try to figure things out on my own, which is difficult.
I recommend everyone who is struggling with insomnia during recovery look up CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy-insomnia). It taught me that while sick I programmed my brain to associate my bed with thinking, tossing in my sleep, being depressed and anxious. Bed should only be for sleep and sex. That includes struggling to fall asleep. If you can’t sleep get out of bed for 15 minutes like the video mentioned. All good advice
Any advice how to handle the anxiety of insomnia the night before something i want/need to do? I sleep the worst when i commit to something the next day, work, but even something i really like and i often get so angry when my insomnia destroys my plans. I don't want it to rule my life, my whole life i am in fear about not being able to do what i want/need. But that leads again to pressure and makes insomnia worse. Any idea?
I understand how frustrating it can be when insomnia interferes with your plans and causes anxiety. Here are a few suggestions to help you handle the anxiety of insomnia: 1. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine such as reading a book, taking a warm bath, practicing deep breathing exercises or anything that you feel relaxes you most. 2. Have a sleep-friendly environment. We're talking comfortable, cool, and dark. Remove any distractions. 3. Find healthy ways to cope with stress and anxiety throughout the day like meditation, or gentle exercise like yoga. 4. Avoid consuming stimulants like caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol, close to bedtime. It's also important to be patient with yourself and not let the fear of insomnia rule your life. Finding a balance between planning and accepting the unpredictable nature of sleep can help you reduce the pressure and improve your overall well-being. Best wishes to you!
15 mg of Mirtazapin works great for me. 30 mg makes me eat too much. And too tired the next day. CBD oil is even better. But if you can not grow and make it yourself...Its too expensive for most people.
Tried both of those. Glad you found something that works for you. Yeah, 30mg of Mirtazapine messes up my appetite too. It helps with my moods, but I still can’t sleep on it anyways. I guess you gotta find what works for your body and it takes time just trying different things….
I have that jolting also! When you are almost asleep then you get a rush of adrenaline that wakes you up and you get so frustrated… is this your sensitive nervous system kicking in? I am experiencing CFS for the second time in my life and now hold a lot of trauma (PTSD) around sleep :( Love your channel thank you for all your help & awareness 🤍

I'm experiencing the same thing. It's so debilitating. My lack of sleep is causing heart issues as well.
@@bas3374Is it considered safe? Longterm?
I'm the same as you where if I know i need to get up early, I won't sleep, then it takes me 2 or 3 good sleeps afterwards to recover from that... it sucks..

❤😊
Thank you!!!!
You're welcome!

What are your thoughts on stimulants like ritalin? It keeps me functioning during he day, but I dont know how it affects my recovery.
Hey what are your views about whitney dafoe ?
O sorry should have listen to the end, wow, you really have good sleep now too, wow

Oh, this is a really bad place to be. I had the same in 2020 when I got longcovid. I can now sleep 5-6 hours with the first 3-4 the best. This is what worked for me if you want to try it.
1. Immunebooster with vit d3, b1 and zinc.
2. Calcium magnesium supplement.
3. A herbal supplement called stress no more.
* I use these after dinner and after my midnight snack at least 6 hours after dinner.
4. A multivitamin, because I could not eat a lot of foods
5. A Vit B complex and another vit b supplement for certain symptoms my dr prescribed
* I use the above after breakfast.
7. After slowly adding green vegetables with the help of activated charcoal I started eating a small to medium size clove of garlic with breakfast. This has given me deep sleep for the first time in 3,5 years.
Ad lastly as Miguel said try to relax about it. Most difficult thing to do, I know.

What are the things you struggle with most at the moment except insomnia?
What are somethings that we need to strike out before we can conclude we have chronic fatigue syndrome ?
blood work to rule out viral infections, mold toxicity, etc. brain scans to rule out neurological issues. stuff like that. if all your blood work comes back normal and scans are normal, it’s possible you have a dysregulated nervous system from unresolved trauma, PTSD, accumulated stress, etc.
Agreed! Thank you!

It's one of those many symptoms that you throw under the umbrella of "hypersensitive nervous system issue"
As long as you don't mentally panic it'll just go away and pop up here and there.
Uuugghhh
I totally understand 👍
Hey have your heard from anyone that feels like like the never really sleep. I feel like I’m always slightly awake at all times but times is moving faster. Almost like I’m just thinking but sometimes I’ll drift off into very vivid dreams but never have deep sleep.
It’s been like this for almost 2 years. Zero deep sleep

Can social anxiety cause insomnia?
May I ask what symptoms you may be struggling with ATM?
@@cfsrecovery Sure. My main symptoms are PEM, fatigue and brain fog.
Or you can also look at the sleep coach school on utube and he has a totally different approach. I find cbt too severe and stressful.

Here are a few suggestions to help you handle the anxiety of insomnia:
Good for you 😁
Tried both of those.
Glad you found something that works for you.
Yeah, 30mg of Mirtazapine messes up my appetite too. It helps with my moods, but I still can’t sleep on it anyways.

Yes. Fermented Amanita Muscaria) ( Fly Agaric ) could be another thing to test. You can find them right now if you live in an area where they grow..
I have that jolting also! When you are almost asleep then you get a rush of adrenaline that wakes you up and you get so frustrated… is this your sensitive nervous system kicking in?
I am experiencing CFS for the second time in my life and now hold a lot of trauma (PTSD) around sleep :(

What other things you struggle with most at the moment?

How important is sleep In recovery
Out of nearly 150 hours I've slept about 13 hours in total while working 12h shifts everyday. I am right now swaying back and forth sitting on the wedge of my bed and at this point I'm crashing in all the possible ways. I feel like I'm dying.
I get you. Here is another video I made and hoping it'll help you: th-cam.com/video/k_mljnKn8O4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LPuXIoYKG9rdpO8Q. You can also check other of my videos for more specifics. 😊
