Great Trip Report! The A220 really is a lovely aircraft to fly on, it's just like the smaller brother of the A350. AMS is probably my favourite transfer airport in Europe. Everything in one large terminal and is a nice place to wait for onward flights.
Thanks so much, mate! :)) The A220 is probably among the most comfortable planes to fly in Europe nowadays. It looks very modern, comfortable cabin (2-3 layout), very silent... By the way! I don't know if I told you already... anyway, on Saturday we'lll have a new airline on the channel: Binter Canarias! The Canary islands airline! :D
In that case, let me share with you these 2 videos I have on my channel. They might bring you some nice memories! th-cam.com/video/xeAeYXgU5PA/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/qYqqcW117Aw/w-d-xo.html Hope you will enjoy them! :))
Good report again mate! I'm glad you asked what the strange noise was (assuming you don't mean the screaming baby 🤣) This will interest quite a few folks as it's not entirely known what is creating the howling sounds from this aircraft, sit back this will be a long comment... The CS100-300 or A220 has the PW1000G family engine, also found on the E290 and 295 (the engine is identical apart from thrust rating) and the A320NEO family but those are larger. Their can also be smaller variants found on the now paused MRJ SpaceJets and the E275 (no orders yet) When the PW1000G spools up you hear the howling sound, some describe it as a Vulcan howl or whale song, it sounds similar to blowing air into a bottle. The PW1000G has VSV (Variable stator vanes) in the compressor. All jet engine have guide vanes in the compressor, their job is the guide the air through the compressor smoothly and more efficiently. The PW1000G's guide vanes are variable, meaning they move. Below 80% thrust the guide vanes move so that the engine has max performance in the compressor. It's hard to explain but essentially the howl is created by the movement of the guide vanes which then increases the air flow. The gearing system on the engine also helps create this as well. The 1st stage fan spins at 1/3 the speed as the compressor so the air accelerates very quickly once it's in the compressor. Hope I've explained it well enough for everyone to understand. The PWs on the 320NEO family don't howl as often, the larger engine helps soften the howling sound. These well and truly some remarkable engines! Another odd noise you can hear well in this video is shortly after the aircraft rotates you hear a weird robotic sound? Hard to describe but you hear it every time you sit behind the wing on the CS. Nothing to worry about that's just the PTU powering up the main landing gear motors. Thanks for capturing the sounds so well OnBoardHD, the PW1000G's howl has become one of my favourite sounds in aviation!
Thanks a lot for the detailed comment! :) I was suspecting that it could be the PTU, but as I don't know almost anything about the A220, I didnd't say it. What I didn't know is about the variable vanes. It makes a lot of sense what you comment. The plane that I've stutied till date, doesn't have variable vanes, so I thought all would be that way :D Thanks again. Have a nice weekend :)
very nice flight review Lucas.Every season is so different from the other, especially Summer with winter.I like them both.A220 is a remarkable plane,so modern and quiet.Schiphol spotting is the best in Europe.See you
