I saw that the night it happened he was on the world news and everything the guys then could sell it make you think it's real nothing today comes close
Ox Baker's heart punch gimmick became the real deal after those two deaths and Ox was not afraid to mention it in his promos. It made believers out of people. He cut great promos too, because he had a real talent for comedy and story telling. The promo in which Ox complained about when Garvin smashed his dentures was hysterical. Plus he was immortalized in the cult classic "Escape From New-York". RIP Ox Baker and thanks for the entertainment.
Met OX on 6th Ave (Ave of America's) in Manhattan maybe 15 years ago we talked and that voice coming from such a nice-seeming man brought me back to my childhood
The story I heard was Ray Gunkel wrestled that match against Ox after having consumed a big meal at a restaurant in town, and in addition to high blood pressure Ray may have had an undetected heart ailment as well. But he worked a very vigorous match with Baker and went back to the showers. After he showered off he had a massive heart attack. If he had wrestled against anyone that night he still would likely have suffered the heart attack. His opponent just happened to be Ox. Ox Baker spent the last years of his life living on his farm in Danielson CT, just a. few miles from the Rhode Island border. He and his wife Kathy Ann renewed their wedding vows on a Connecticut public access cable TV show. She was a security guard at the Staples distribution center in Danielson. She passed away around 2009 or 2010, and Ox passed a few years later.
I remember reading the story on 'Sex, Lies, and Headlocks'. I was surprised about reading the story, because I was into the details of how wrestling was in the past.
Dude, eating a big meal isn't going to kill you. He had heart disease and that caused a heart attack. It just so happened to have happened after wrestling Ox. He might've had the heart attack in the ring while he was working, but the symptoms didn't surface until afterwards.
Ox was also briefly in a Jackie Chan film. I forget the name of it at the moment, but it was filmed around 1980, and was the first attempt at introducing Chan to American audiences. It unfortunately wasn't successful, and Jackie was truly unable to find success here in America until approximately 20 years later with Rumble in The Bronx.
Ray did not take the heart punch. He took forearm blows which Ray told Ox to "lay them in there" (make it look real). Ray was a big burley 48 year old. Many men died of heart attacks at that age back them.
On August 1, 1972, Gunkel wrestled Ox Baker in Savannah, Georgia. During the match, Baker punched Gunkel in the chest. Gunkel won the match, but he died later that day of heart problems. An autopsy showed that Gunkel suffered from undiagnosed arteriosclerosis, but that his death was a result of heart trauma. It was determined that Baker's punch created a hematoma, which led to a blood clot that caused his death when it reached his heart. Gunkel was buried in Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, Georgia.
Ox was a great guy and long time friend even played my manager in Florida for a while in 85. He was one of the funniest most entertaining guys to be around as well.
I read in a back issue of "The Wrestler" or "Inside Wrestling" that Stan Stasiak and Ox Baker had a contest to see who's heartpunch was the most severe and I remember the magazine revealing that Stan Stasiak's heart punch won.
Ox did work in WWWF/WWF on a couple of occasions. One was in the late '60s as The Arkansas Ox, and the second stint was in spring of 1980 when he wrestled two matches on a taping of Championship Wrestling. He wrestled against Frankie Williams and Charlie Brown, and he was managed by The Grand Wizard.
I worked with Ox Baker at the census bureau back in 2000. I have many stories about him that would turn this paragraph into a full blown novel.😁 Nevertheless, it was one of the coolest experiences I ever had.
Ox worked in the WWWF in the late 60’s as the Friendly Arkansas Ox and did one tv tapings in 1980 for them but got let go. Outside of the ring, the nicest man you could ever meet. Literally worked in every territory.
I meet ox baker several times he had the great bad guy look and attitude but talking to him he was a good guy I was a kid he couldn't believe I wanted his autograph but he give it to me
He had a heated rivalry with Invader #1 in the early 80's. Hugo Savinovich was his manager back then. This was in WWC (known as Capitol Sports Promotions back then).

Tuesday 8/1/72 (GCW) Savannah, Georgia Savannah Civic Center:Ray Gunkel defeated Of Baker 7 minutes ( after this match Ray Gunkel dies in dressing room.) Plus Opening Match Wayne Cowan(aka Dutch Mantell) battled Timothy Geohagen to a time limit draw.
This is crazy how I work with Bob Baker and we were talking about wrestling and he said his uncle wrestled back in the day and I said who. He said Ox Baker who had the Heart Punch finishing move. He said he never actually killed anyone. The move was so sellable they made Ox become a villain since they made it seem like he was killing people. So that made for a good heel. That’s what’s up though. You have to love wrestling.
Alberto Torres Ramon’s older brother died after a match with Ox but even then at least from what I’ve read Ox did throw Alberto in the turnbuckle and it busted his ribs but he actually developed pneumonia on the hospital and died from that.
Ox never worked for long with what’s now known as WWE, but he in fact did wrestle for them in 1967 when they were the WWWF (World Wide Wrestling Federation), and later, early into the WWF days (the W for Wide dropped in 1979) he had a match in 1980 with The Grand Wizard as his manager.
Ron Fuller tells a whole different story about that Ann Gunkel thing, he was there at the time, and Ray didn't like sharing the territory with the Fuller/Welch's and was planning himself to break away and start his own company. When Ray died, Ann continued on with the plan to break away and initiate the war.
Correct and Buddy Fuller seeing the storm brewing on the horizon, traded his share in Georgia to his Uncle Lester Welch for Lester's share in Florida.....
My name is Pam Gunkel Jones and I am Ray Gunkel’s daughter. There are so many inaccuracies so Dutch I will reach out to you. I have the autopsy report and a thorough investigation. All you guys have is speculation. He died from “blunt force trauma to the heart.” ox definitely hit him with intention. To be clear. He did suffer from heart disease and high blood pressure. This was not the cause of his death. However, as I have consulted with numerous pathologist and physicians, including people who treated him, it is speculated that within several months he may have had a heart attack , if he had not had treatment. But the cause of his death was blunt force trauma, and it is exactly in keeping with the personality of ox Baker that all he cared about was his job versus the fact that he intentionally killed a man. The effect of his decision haunts me today. he knew this was a dangerous move. And if you want to know some of the real issues that happened after my father’s death. Anyone can ask me and I’ll tell you the truth and I have everything in writing. I appreciate what you’re saying, but you guys are not responsible in your journalism, but you are certainly entitled to your theories and speculation. It’s time to set the truth straight.
A lot of people forget about Alberto Torres, a second man who suffered the same fate. If Ox Baker were alive today, he could find a certain pocket pool player somewhere in aew that would make a perfect victim #3.

Unbeknownst to Ray or Ox Ray had a deformity going to his heart and when he hit it it aggravated it. Ox said Ray kept saying hit me harder. Ray had planned on going out on his own before he died in the Atlanta territory.Besides Ray and Paul Jones who had a 12% share (not No.1 Paul Jones) there was several others that had their hand in the teal but Ray could always get Paul Jones to vote with him because Ray owned something like 47% of the territory but Buddy Fuller who was a joke in the ring at least in Atlanta and Les thatcher and Leo Garbaldi had talked Paul Jones into voting with them to overthrow Ray. So I think Ray was under a lot of stress also. As far as Ray eating a ton of food that day Buddy Colt said he’d left the territory but there was no way anybody could convince him that Ray ate such a big meal that day that Ray was to health conscious and into conditioning.

ox main line was " I like to hurt people" also ox wrote many children books, coloring books.and a few cooking shows after he retired.
Ox appeared in Escape from New York. Just recently watched an old match of him wrestling Mark Lewin in the 60s.
Ox was a contestant on Price Is Right
Mark Lewin is someone who is criminally underrated
Mark Lewin was trained by Danny McShane in the early 1950's, and still had one of the best looking physiques in the 1980's.
