My mom worked at a store in Kansas City and said he would stop in while in town. Said he was not only one of the nicest but funniest guys to come in, he would have a lot of the girls in the shop cracking up
My mom was the head of security and ushers for the Bell Audiitorium in Augusta Georgia. I was a kid , and went to the matches every Monday night , back in the day. I was scared of Ox Baker. She had home walk up behind me one night, and pick me up in his arms. He looked at me and said, “ I’m only mean in the ring , and on TV.” He bought me a hot dog and a coke. Those were the days.
unusual because this was still in the days where breaking kayfabe was really discouraged. glad for him that he got to do this and not get disciplined by the business
@@NewOrleansGuy837 While Ox didn't try to get heat from the audience, there was an undercurrent of intimidation that Bob Barker highlighted with his comments. And Ox bragged a little bit about beating people up and being good looking.
Ox passed away early this morning 10/12/14! R.I.P. Big guy! Even though he was as mean as thy come in the ring this video showed just how nice a guy he was in person!
You see how nice and respectful Ox was. He was excited to win the prizes! One day, in about 1976, I was a kid and walking down the street past a gas station in Pensacola, FL. A car pulled up to exit the store and enter the road. I stopped to see the car blocking the sidewalk. I looked in the drivers window and it was Ox. His window was rolled down and he was in a GREAT BIG caddy or town car. I said "Your....", before I could finish he said "Ox Baker Professional Wrestler" and sped off. I remember it like it was yesterday.
@@mr.x9566 I had the privilege of getting the autograph of King Kong Bundy at a house show in southern Wisconsin back in 2001, and he was incredibly polite. Every time I tried to compliment him and say how much fun guys like him made wrestling back in the day, he ALWAYS responded by saying, "No, thank you for being a fan. We appreciate you." A very friendly guy, and from what little I have seen he's a really good interview as well.
One of the nicest people you could ever meet. I met him at a baseball game Genuinely kind friendly. It is amazing how easily wrestlers can slip,in and out of character
Voodoo Child Funny to think that Baker's appearance on The Price Is Right would have been right around the time that his film "Escape from New York" would have been in theaters. Talk about getting heat! (Mind you, that wicker chair looks like it would be a little... delicate for someone of Ox's size.)
the coolest part was when they were talking about the home town and Bob worked the concession at the wrestling, Very cool to see. Gotta love the old school feeling
I find myself coming back to this clip often. Ox was definitely one of a kind and it's great to see the legend interacting with another legend, the one and only Bob Barker.
Truly one of the greatest performers ever A real gentleman with a heart of gold I cannot say enough to the character of Ox he was full of integrity and honor knowledge beyond words I miss you my dear dear friend....Thunder...
I met him when I was 8 years old. First wrestler to ever scare me. He was signing autographs at intermission and although I was terrified, he couldn’t have been nicer and I’ll never forget that. I lost the autograph in a flood, but I’ll never forget the memory of how nice he was to me. And it’s been 40 years.
I saw this the day it aired when I was a teenager. I was going nuts when I saw it. I was a Wrestling fan from several years before living in Florida when I was just a little kid. ❤ I wanted him to win so bad, even if I didn't like Ox back then. He was a "heal" as I can remember. But I wanted him to win. 👍😉
Same, I was around 14. I'm from Toronto, so I never got to see him wrestle, but I knew about him from the magazines and a few times we went to Florida he was on FCW in the 80's.
Kurt said Ox was really clobbering his shield with the baseball bat. If you watch it, you can see there was no pretending or funny camera angle to give the illusion of hitting hard. (...he also said he was a great guy as well...😉)
@@karlepaul6632 Yeah and the story goes, Kurt asked him to ease up a bit, and he didnt, so during one take he gently "popped" Ox in the jimmies with his bat, as a "now, ease up big guy" reminder. They got on well after that.
Sad to hear about Ox Baker's passing. He represented everything that was great about the good old days of professional wrestling. Watching his Price Is Right appearance never gets tiresome.
Ox was the nicest guy in the world. My uncle drove down to LA in the 70s on his Harley and he did not calculate how much money it would cost.so he was down to his eating money and he parked in the wrong spot and was getting towed. He was begging the driver not to tow his bike when Ox pulled up and talked to the tow truck driver out of the tow..RIP Ox.
Ox seems like he was actually a really great guy to know in real life. Man, he could REALLY get some heat in a crowd though. One of the most sinister heels of all time. His heart punch was the stuff of legends.
Such an anti-climatic ending, but this was simply awesome. Love how little effort it took him the spin the wheel compared to every other person I've ever seen on the show.
Grew up watching him wrestling in Chicago in the AWA / Indianapolis territories. Ox scared the hell out of me when I was a child on TV. He seems like a really nice guy here. Fun to see this!
I actually saw this live in between classes in my freshman year in college, and I laughed when they introduced him as Bruce and said “his name is not Bruce, his name is Ox”🤣🤣
First time I laid eyes on Ox Baker, he was pictured in one of the wrestling mags I should have kept. He scared the heck out my 10 year old self. He was a true classic. Professional wrestling and the men who made the magic were something else. I miss those days.
Ox was a really nice man with tons of personality and charisma. He was from a very different era of professional wrestling when kayfabe was alive and well. It was funny that Bob asked about Springfield, Missouri because Ox was from that area.
I actually remember this. I was a WWF fan so at the time I never heard of Ox at this time but I watched TPIR religiously and remember this well. I'm only here because I saw this on his bio on Wiki just now.
My mother got him on this show and she still has the clock!!
Awesome! :)
Meghan Baker Sorry for your loss. What a great way to remember him!!
Meghan Baker That's your Daddy? Wow, that's so great to have this memory.
Thanks Bernard and yes ptl44 that is my father
Meghan Baker Ox Baker was wearing a Rolex watch on his wrist if I'm not mistaken ^_^
In that era, usually the nastiest villains in wrestling were some of the nicest guys in real life. Ox Baker was definitely one of those guys
Bobby Heenan and Baron Von Raschke were two very nice guys.
We know this
I met The Junkyard Dog and Andre The Giant when I was a kid, they couldn’t have been nicer guys.
@@MusicHandsAbrupt I'm glad to hear that. I've heard sometimes, Andre could be rude.
My mom worked at a store in Kansas City and said he would stop in while in town. Said he was not only one of the nicest but funniest guys to come in, he would have a lot of the girls in the shop cracking up
Two professionals at the top of their games. Ox had more charisma bidding on a clock than most of today's WWF wrestlers have in their whole career.

Seems like a nice guy for sure, but he had to play the heel in the ring.

Class act.Real gentleman
How the hell did TH-cam just recommend this gem.

Aww! Rip big ox
RIP Bob Barker. 😥 Such a long life. Thank you for the memories and for your service.
RIP Ox Baker. “Escape From New York” was great with him in it.
I miss this era of 📺 and remember an old show Truth Or Consequences with Mr Barker.
That was Yak Morrison

I bet that when he drove off he had a big smile on his face.

This is truly an awesome find! Ox was one of the most memorable characters in wrestling history, they don't make em like that anymore.
Escape From NY with Kurt Russell, 1981 - like it was yesterday. He creeped me out even at age 12! But was such a sweet guy in real life.
Voodoo Child

Ox looked like he was having a great time. He is a natural face. Rest in Peace Mr Baker.
Kind of funny to say as he was one of the most notorious heels.
He’s the killer heel with a killer face

He's dead? Damn...RIP
That’s a long run for a wrestler.
If I remember correctly, he was also a very good cook, so that range probably appealed to him. He even authored a cookbook before he passed away.

How did I never know Ox Baker was on TPIR. Best line ever....especially if I don't win and Bob's reaction. Pure gold!!
Thank you so much for sharing this classic!!!!!!
Great clip, thanks. Grandma's favorite wrestler. RIP
This was a bit surreal but even more wonderful in a charming way. Loved it!
What a nice human being. RIP Mr Baker ❤️
It's neat to see a wrester as himself for once - not so much the "persona".
His first name, Douglas, is a pretty nice name, too.
What a gentleman.
With Ox at his side, Bob could take on any Samoan! Even those who smell their cooking and ones who demand to be acknowledged.

Ox just passed here a day or so ago. RIP to a genuinely nice man.
RIP Ox We miss you!!!
1981 .oh god how simple it was for a 9 year old then remember these days and tv game shows
I believe he was in “Escape from New York “.
Andrew Braverman He was. He had the fight scene with Snake Plissken.
If Ox had put everything he had into it, I wonder how hard he could have spun that wheel?
tirmyta It'd probably have broken or still be spinning! Lol😂
It probably would've rolled right through the building, out into the parking lot, and down the street
I remembered this episode.
Very very cool! I really dug Ox. Loved his part in "escape from New York".
Oh, this guy was one of my absolute favourites.
I remember I saw this live... Couldn't believe what I was seeing 😁
One of the best game show host Bob Barker.
Oh wow!! Amazing! I am a big Ox fan!! Love him!
What a lot of folks do not know is that he was the guy who fought Snake Plipkin.
No, he legitimately was. Ox Baker was actually in the movie "Escape from New York".
Donna was probably afraid to bid $1 more
smart lady :D LOL
RIP big man!
The crowd popped pretty big when Ox said he was a pro wrestler.
Yeah and that was right before the wrestling bloom of the 80's.
This is awesome!
How classic!!! I also saw an old Hollywood Squares out here with Nick Bockwinkel as contestant.
I meet ox once he was he was down to earth and very respectful we talked for over two hours

Two legends.
I no longer watch t.v in fact I haven't for 20 years or so and I'm glad! this is way more entertainment which what t.v was.

After he retired from active wrestling he was an impartial commentator for the Global Wrestling Federation. He spoke in his natural voice.
This is one of the most chill and charismatic people I've seen on TPIR. Why is he not in more TPIR compilations?
Ox seemed like he was such a jovial gentleman, wild to think of him in the ring as a contrast.
Awesome
Amazing!!!!
What made it even better was that the 3 women on contestants row were all incredibly small, which made Ox look like even more of a giant. lol
