Thanks for the video, I installed a C2 a couple of years ago on my 2020 Prius Prime and the C2 has driven over 70,000 miles for me. I can’t say enough on how much I appreciate how the C2 has changed and improved my driving experience. It truly is chill driving and it has me very spoiled and I don’t want to drive a car without it ever. With the release of the, 3X and price drop, it’s just amazing. Give it a try. 😊

Finally Openpilot being discussed on Out of Spec! I've been asking for this! My Comma 2 has been driving me and my family around in our 2018 Honda Odyssey for more than a year now. I'm excited to get a Comma 3 for my IONIQ5.

Comma 3 installed and running in my IONIQ5. Truly remarkable. E2E longitudinal, experimental mode - stops at red lights and goes at green. Adjusts speed for turns and traffic flow. And of course manages steering excellently.

im one of those people within the group of people who run openpilot on a Tesla.
    its a seperate fork but it supports Model S/X (Pre-AP 2012 - 2014), AP1 and AP2.
Model 3 and Model Y is being worked on.
    Official Openpilot does support AP2+
for my own Model S its a 2014 without Autopilot so it originally lacked Electronic brakebooster (original model s only had vacuum booster) which meant that Openpilot could only control accel/regen + autosteer, no braking.
this year i retrofitted an electronic brakebooster (no car config change needed) so in the future my classic Model S will be able to use "Navigate on openpilot" (the name for the taco bell comma challenge)

Self-correction: Flexray is a communication protocol not a form of radar, but it is the pathway radar data would be communicated over rather than CAN or CAN-FD - the protocols most vehicles use and OpenPilot supports.

I am upgrade from Comna 2 installed on a 2020 Toyota Corolla SE. The driver vng experience is super smooth. Fixed my sister's motion sickness. Navigation is optional and works well but it's not ready for robo. Install takes maybe 30 minutes including calibration. Worth every dime. It's fantastic interstate cruising. Appreciate this look into the experience of using OpenPilot. But gotta disagree with the idea that Musk is one of the best minds in AI. Tesla no doubt has a lot of talented AI engineers, it's remarkable what FSD can do (though I do have doubts about how ready it is for the average person.) But Elon is not working on that product himself and is not personally responsible for its performance/advancement. He is not personally writing code or training models. People give him way too much credit and ignore all the hundreds of talented people who actually make the products.

I first heard about this about three years ago after I bought a Buick Regal TourX (which was build by Opel as the Insignia). The Buick had adaptive Cruise Control that was significantly better than the Mercedes Distronic that was on my previous car. I realized the Buick had electric steering and so I started looking into what might be available to upgrade the cruise control. I found there was a small community of people who were hacking Open Pilot to be able to work on cars beyond the "official" list. Some of those were using it on the Buick Regal cars. I was intrigued but also concerned about possible liabilities of hacking into a car's driver assistance system so, ultimately, I didn't pursue it any further.

Love Openpilot. Another thing that I personally feel is a HUGE advantage is that you can run a "fork". Kinda like how Android phones usually have a manufacturer specific UI built on top of stock android. I personally prefer Samsung's UI over stock android, One Plus, etc. So in the same way I prefer certain Openpilot "forks" over the stock system. TLDR: It's customizable.

Close to 50K miles on my 2019 Camry Hybrid's 61K odometer was driven by Comma 2 and now 3 and I saw George's KIA EV6 purchase live stream and wanted to buy the Ioniq 5 however the dealer markup put me off. Two days ago I placed an order for the now close to original price Model Y and lower than original if you consider tax credit however I decided not to purchase enhanced autopilot or FSD and will keep my Comma 3 device even after selling my Camry Hybrid in the hopes that Openpilot might one day support my Model Y. In 2019 I purchased a model 3 and used Autopilot during my 80 mile daily commute to work but decided to take advantage of Tesla's 7 day/1000 mile refund policy as I heard rumors about the Model Y coming in the near future. I got the base model Camry Hybrid instead and hated the Toyota Safety Sense P that my car came with. Enter Openpilot in Comma 2 device and after a few software updates in 2020 Openpilot was driving my car without nagging me to touch steering wheel in dense fog, heavy rain and strong crosswinds.

Earlier this year, until I very seriously considered getting an Ioniq 5 and Comma and watched a ton of Comma videos. I even purchased an Ioniq 5 Limited (without Comma) while keeping my Tesla order. For various reasons, after 6 months I decided I did not likethe Ioniq and sold it. I took delivery of the Tesla and currently waiting for the FSD on city streets beta. However, I continue to monitor the progress of Comma, especially since the departure of Hotz. As a side note, a big advantage to Comma is the cost and the ability to take it to the next car. However, there are bigger questions about Comma that will be answered with the passage of time. But, you are only risking $3k, so not a big deal. Ultimately, I will choose whomever can provide the system with the best overall active safety features, even if the basics of the host vehicle are don’t meet my standards. FWIW, my wife and I are in our mid-70’s and need all the help we can get! In the meantime, I will enjoy my Tesla and continue to root for Comma.

We need to see openpilot added to the hogback tests, probably on a Kia/Hyundai (as that is what comma is using) or aptera as they are the closest to using as oem inclusion. I would also be interested in seeing how much extra the digital radar Kyle showed from Magma helps (and if it can be integrated at all). Personally I don’t see how a system can have super human performance without digital radar, and I think the real world bar for widespread FSD adoption will be significantly better than average driver performance.

So intriguing… and well beyond my gray matter's ability. I guess I can understand wanting to stick with a 3rd party approach, but it wouldn't surprise me if, say, Hyundai buys OpenPilot someday and releases it as HDA 3. Also gotta say that, when I hear what OpenPilot can do, it suggests to me that removing radar and ultrasonic sensors for "Tesla Vision" will prove a big mistake, a definite step backwards. I anticipate that you'll be implementing OpenPilot on your cars, Dave!

Assuming Aptera really supports right to repair, we can hope that they provide an easily accessible tap into the CANBUS. From what I gleam from the Comma talks, most OEMs with Lane Assist technology have a camera (and/or radar?) unit behind the mirror and the Comma unit harness is plugged in there. In some cases there was another harness that had to tie into another location to control acceleration and braking. I’m hoping we can tap into CANBUS to be able to add buttons that could control heating, etc. I want some more buttons and don’t want to fiddle around with a display to control my heating/cooling.

I'm a 2-1/2 year practiced owner/user of Tesla FSD Beta (now v 11.5). I am happy to hear that Aptera will integrate Open Pilot in their vehicle at some future date. I have no desire to drive a car without excellent ADAS, and Open Pilot appears to be superior to most legacy automaker autopilot systems for highway driving. I will say, however, that Open Pilot is far second to FSD Beta when it comes to off highway, general autonomous driving. The end-to-end implementation strategy that comma ai is using is impressive, but will only take them so far. They've reached a local maximum, in my opinion. I'd like to see how Open Pilot deals with cyclists, pedestrians, construction zones, roundabouts, negotiated 4-way stop intersections, bad weather, etc. without human intervention.

FSD is a great idea. But what will happen when someone has an accident while using it and blames the HW or SW for what is actually driver error? If the insurance won't cover it, just sue the FSD company to recoup your loss. This will lead to many lawsuits and wealthy attornies.

    • @MillionMileDrive

If the car with these systems still has pedals and a steering wheel, you are still responsible. If you see something sketchy, you are still able to take the wheel to swerve or slam on the brakes. You can blame the hardware or software all you want but ultimately, it's the driver that wasn't paying attention and didn't take corrective action.
I don't think actual level 5 full self driving will be released until they're 99.9999999 % safe... which isn't for a long time.
