In January 2022 I rented a Model 3 from Hertz in Miami. It was my 1st EV drive. I was interested in an EV but specifically didn't want a Tesla. Pulling out of the parking garage onto an 8 lane highway was terrifying but after the first 20 minutes everything was great, as was the whole week with it. Came home and bought a Model Y the next week!

Rented a Model Y earlier in Dec for a work trip... Got to Hertz.. No Y. Was given a standard 3 with 45% charge and no charger in the car. Car was also stuck in Valet mode from previous renter so I had to call Roadside assistance... Not a great experience but WILL be renting a Tesla for my next work trip again because the car experience was good.

Rented a MY LR with FSD from Hertz at Austin airport this summer for 5 days. $71 a day. Return with at least 10%. Charge at Tesla supercharger at Tesla rate added to your bill. Best part was when I returned it the receipt showed that the rate was adjusted down to $36 a day. Did get the insurance at $36 dollars a day. So maybe that had something to do with lower rate on return. Can't complain.

Hi Dave, great video! I checked with our Hertz in Vancouver Canada about renting a Model Y to road trip to Edmonton, AB around Christmas time, as you may not know I just took delivery of my brand new 2023 Ionic 5 and it has a defect in a CCS charger pin Temperature sensor and will not fast charge, the CCS socket wiring harness is 8 weeks on back order. They are really up on their Tesla, and I can even reserve with Winter Tires! Way to go Hertz, you are really driving EV's to the forefront!

I rented a Model Y from Hertz at the Seattle airport a couple of months ago as I wanted to have Dog Mode since we brought our dog along. On my reservation it said the model was guaranteed, and they did have several Model Y's there (all with Induction wheels and almost all badly curbed) when I arrived.
One thing you seem to have forgotten to mention or ask Hertz about is the Tesla app situation. I did not get any app access and thought it was going to be a clunky experience to not have phone-as-key available (I use that on my own MYP). But it turned out fine using just the key card on my trip. I'm not sure if it would ever be possible for Hertz to offer Tesla app access, but that would be great if they could figure out the logistics with that.

Thanks. Great video. On 30 May 2023, we are renting a Model 3 from Hertz in Alexandria, Virginia, for one week to decide if an EV is for us or not. We will update with our comments to see how they compare to yours after the rental experience. I'm reading fine print in Hertz terms and conditions in their Tesla section on how much charge must be left in battery to avoid additional fees. Seems to be different for different places. Here it's complicated with two long difficult paragraphs of small print. Hertz seems to be refining their rules. Here we go and I paraphrase:
    1. Hertz will strive to provide a vehicle with 80% charge.
    2. I'm required to return the EV with at least 10% minimum charge.
    3. However, the Charge Purchase Option (CPO) kicks in and has additional rules which should be understood to avoid tacked on fees.
    a. For a fee of $35 at time of rental, I can return the EV at any level above 10% charge.
    b. If I return the EV at a charge level above 50%, the CPO will be "removed".
    c. If I don't purchase CPO and the EV has 60% or more charge when I rent it (remember they strive for 80%) and I return the EV with a charge of 50% or less I will be charged a Battery Recharge Fee of $35. Further, if I return the EV with a charge of less than 10% with or without the CPO I'll be charged an "Undercharged Battery Fee" of $25. This will apply in addition to any applicable "EV Battery Recharge Fee".
    d. Nothing in terms and conditions states what happens if they give me a vehicle with less than 60% battery charge and at what charge level I must return it to avoid additional fees.
Had it not been for your and other videos on Hertz Tesla rentals I wouldn't have read the confusing poorly written fine print on CPO. I would have assumed I can return Tesla with 10% or above and not be charged. I will ask at rental counter what the heck this all means and how they interpret it. More later.

Interesting video - I was in Norway earlier this year and rented a Jaguar I-Pace at Bergen Airport. The only stipulation was to bring it back at > 80% state of charge (which I did). Just had to find the nearest charging station to the airport before dropping it off !

I’m glad you got your EV from Bergen Airport. I rented from Hertz because they have been hyping online so I booked an ID3 in March this year for a month rental in June and July………. When I got to the desk all they could offer me was a Toyota Carolla Wagon Self charging Hybrid - AVIS and Budget next door had loads of EV’s but Hertz had rented out the one they had assigned to me………. I’ll never be booking another Hertz car again. I told them I didn’t consider a self charging hybrid to be an equivalent to an EV but they couldn’t care less. Spoiled my holiday as one reason we went with an EV in Norway was to see if their charging network is all it’s cracked up to be and also I own an EV in the U.K., why would I rent a fossil powered car ever again.

Great video! I've had friends and coworkers rent a Tesla from Hertz. Most loved the car but key card would confuse some or turn them off on buying one. I would have to explain the phone as a key experience to them and show some how easy it is to own one. Hopefully Tesla will come up with a better solution to this. Key card is really best for emergency.

Glad to see they gave you the LR trim, which I know is AWD. Most car rental websites don't mention the AWD feature when searching. I have a reservation with Hertz for a Model Y in Denver for a ski trip in March - so I'm really hoping that they end up giving me a Y (since that is what I drive at home) and that it is a LR trim.

  • @jimrkelly

On a recent trip to Chicago (Midway Airport) I wanted to rent a Model Y because that's what I drive at home. The deal breaker came when they said I had to bring the car back with 75% SOC. The closest Supercharger was about 50 miles from the airport and I was not willing to sit at a charger to charge over the 80%+ required to insure I got to the Airport with 75% SOC. (I was aware of the charging curve over 80% and they weren't!) The $35 charge was too much to pay. I'm sure Hertz does not have a DC Fast Charger at their location so they would have to charge Level 2. They need to put their thinking cap on and come up with a better plan.

    • @TheRealLaughingGravy
      @TheRealLaughingGravy ปีที่แล้ว +1

Who told you the closest Supercharger was 50 miles away? There are twelve Superchargers less than three miles from Midway Airport, in the Target parking lot at 44th and Pulaski. There are many others around Chicago and the suburbs, all way less than fifty miles away. For scale, if you drove fifty miles north from Midway, you'd be at the Wisconsin border.

Good video Dave. This past summer I was traveling from Houston to Denver in my Ioniq 5, and at one of the charging stations in Kansas, there was a lady trying to charge her Ford Lightning and seemed to be having trouble with what to do, so i went over to see if I could help. She said that the Lightning was a rental because her truck was in the shop being repaired. She had never driven an EV before and did'nt have a clue.
I thought that was a terrible thing to do to a customer. I'm glad that Hertz has a little more understanding when they rent out EVs to customers, to at least inform the renter of what to expect if you're new to driving EVs.

Mmm. Kathy wasn't a happy camper. 😬 Kinda understandable, Dave. 10 months ago Tesla set me up with a Hertz rental Model 3 while mine was in the shop, and I discovered that "basic" AP was just fine, enough for my needs, in some ways even better than EAP. If I were to get another Tesla, I wouldn't pay for more than that, but… I doubt that will happen, as EVs like Kathy's GV60 is more appealing.

Nice that you were able to rent the model Y without issues; I was half expecting Hertz to tell you that no EVs were available and give you a gas car.
I also like the way they seamlessly support supercharging. To avoid lots of roadside assistance calls from customers who don't know what they're doing, it's important for any rental company to make the charging process as idiot-proof as possible, which Hertz did.

I also can't see them charging a similar charge as for bringing a gas car back empty since electricity is much less expensive than gas...maybe $20 or so if it was less than 50% might be a good compromise?
