This awesome backyard 16,000 Gallon Fish Pond with Jumbo Koi is in Germany. Having and keeping a Koi pond requires knowledge and above all passion. But what if those two things come together and what is the secret of a good koi pond?

We kick off the first episode of our European tour with a gigantic Koi pond.
One with a Koi Collection that has been put together with the greatest passion and knowledge. Make no mistake, this is quality at its best.
In my previous tour I mainly visited ponds in the Netherlands and Switzerland. Today we kick off in Germany, at Alexander.
Alexander has been involved in this hobby for over 15 years and traveled for the first time in 2009 to the land of the Koi, Japan.
Alexander knows how to grow his Koi healthy. Despite the large number of fish, they live on a balanced diet.
Growing koi is done by Alexander with the help of his quarantine and growth facility. Alexander has therefore converted his cellar into a small koi paradise!
Despite the good lighting for the Koi, which is also developed by Alexander himself, it was difficult to film indoors in combination with the sound. Alexander told me about his experiences and how he gets the best out of the Koi. I asked Alexander what his secret is to grow the Koi so quickly..
Japan has been keeping its borders closed to tourists for over a year now. Alexander hopes to travel to Japan again in October. Despite the uncertainty, I am curious where he will go first when he returns to Japan.

Hi, thanks for your work and the great idea of doing a European tour.
I think it would be great if you included more footage of the filtration systems of these ponds. This is obviously running smoothly, but we don't even get to see the mechanical filtration system. Does he use drums? Brushes? What are his opinions on water temperature and how does he achieve it? How many drains does he use, and what kind? What is the exchange rate of the water?What kind of ventilation does he use? What would he do differently, if he had to build again?
There is lots of information that would help aspiring hobbyists to build/improve their ponds and that would make these already great videos even more interesting.
I hope you don't mind this suggestion.

What a great video. Alex has one awesome koi pond. Loved his bonsai and all the Japanese gardens. This was all done first class and I know this took so much work to complete. Thanks for sharing this amazing video and giving me the pleasure of being able to see the amazing work that this all took. I was very impressed.
Would love to know more about his filtration system. I saw the name Genesis but if you ever go back please have Alex talk about the filtration system, bottom drains, and how he set up this amazing koi pond.
That pond is heavily loaded with koi but I know he has awesome filtration to hold these many koi’s. Would love to know what he used to set up the entire system. If Alex could do anything different or change anything what would he have changed if he even feels that way.
However one awesome video. Since I will be setting up my own koi pond within the next year I would love to learn as much as possible about how and why he set up his system the way he did. Again, awesome video. 👍🎊👍🎉

Beautiful fish and huge. Mine are not the same quality but they are good enough for me. I have some in the 70cm range.
It’s not about the money, the size of the pond of koi but it’s about what you like! In the end every koi hobbyist has his own story that’s what I like about our hobby ☺️

5:27 Awww cute tancho koi. But in Malaysia that tancho koi doesn't have in fish shop. Only kohaku and Taisho Sanke is available.

Awesome video and hobbyist. Need more footage! Definitely would like more info on the filtration system. How many drains, water turnover rate, generator backup? Etc. If I hit the lottery I will duplicate his system! Lol

What kind of lighting does he use for indoors ? I built an indoor pond for my koi and they’re loosing red colour and going orange I think due to no natural sunlight

Haha Richard! First of all thanks for watching and reaching out. He has a lot.. but they all are won at Japanese Koi Shows. Haha well, I would worry more about the electric and water Bill with changing 3000 liters of water 🚿 every day 😜
Thanks for sharing another stunning video and credit to Alexander for sharing ...he seems like a likable person. There's already a bunch a good questions, i'd like to know what were the high's and low's during the time of koi keeping ... he mentioned right up front losing his 1st three fish which was refreshingly honest. Does Alexander have a proactive approach to combating parasites etc... what does he/yourself think is the best approach to minimising the risks (noted that the outdoor pond isn't covered)..as some people proactively treat to minimise risks. Are there risks in the hobby going forward with the bio security to prevent new strains of diseases being introduced to his pond. And lastly does he have any motivation to show his koi (what is his motivation asnd end game)? Answers to any one of those questions would be appreciated. BTW I'm guessing he's already started a project to build his next pond (house move ... maybe to the mountains of Japan?)!

I absolutely love how beautiful the water movement is! Besides the small waterfall, were there jets in this pond causing the water to be in perpetual movement?
The jets are located just below the waterfall, there is a lot of movement in that pond

Hello Roy, we had not much time to film everything properly. Beside the filtration of the outdoor fish pond was on the other side of the garden. But there is a very big bio filter, let me try to film it when I have the possible to get back 😊

Thanks, so that’s 1 adult Koi per 1000litres, I have heard that’s possible with the right filter/ water movement/ water changes/ just never seen such a good example of it.
You might ask him how he is dealing with Nitrate? Changing 3000L a week would not do it with that fish load.

Hi Madde, I will ask Alexander to send a photo of that. It’s a huge bio filter for sure. We didn’t had enough time to see his filter.. it was my fault… I was a bit to late, had some problems checking out my hotel 🙈

What is the usage of the net hanging on top of the pond? Where can I find it?
Shade… to prevent the water from heating up to much during the summer and skin burns for the fish. It’s also preventing dirt from trees falling in the pond 😃 don’t know where to buy, search for sun covers garden
