I am a bit rusty on chinese military promotion, but I vaguely remember that through the amount of kills they got, chinese soldiers were promoted, in certain kingdoms and certain periods. So Mulan maybe getting promoted quickly is to reflect what kind of killer she has become.

    • @rockogambi
      @rockogambi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Bravo. That is right for the Qin (Warring State) State from 100BC (when State of Qin started that promotion policy) to 221 BC.
As for Mulan, its hard to tell since its such a long gap of time. Another problem with such policy would be the troops getting undisciplined and break the line for kills (like League of Legends). My theory for her is that she gets promoted into a mid low ranking officer for being the battalion messenger (as part of ballad may indicates). Being able to read and good horsemanship are highly valuable.

For the part about Mulan going through the ranks too quickly, it's worth pointing out the meritocratic nature that could occur in ancient China. During the time before and during the establishing of the original Wei Kingdom centuries prior during the Fall of the Eastern Han and Three Kingdoms era, many could often be promoted greatly through the quality of their feats (eg. many of the careers of generals in the Shu Kingdom) or from their status in previous armies (eg. Zhang Liao being made a general of what would become the Wei Kingdom upon his inclusion within their ranks by virtue of being an enemy general prior). In some cases, it really was as simple as killing the right person.

Agreed. Mulan is the ideal version of what "mature" actually means Mature is not throwing blood everywhere, having skulls lining the streets, and having our characters be unemotional boring mannequins with no personalities.
And I have to say Mulan (1998) and Mulan Rise of A Warrior are rather like apples and oranges to me. I don't really like one more than the other because they're different enough they're separate entities. Mulan (1998) is a children's film so it can't get too brutal but it can still present philosophical questions in ways, everyone, especially children, can understand and it has enough humor to fall back onto when needed. Mulan Rise A Warrior does have the unfortunate state of not being a children's film so it loses out on a large potential audience of viewers but it exchanges that loss by being a film worth remembering to the current generation that I believe would be great to show children once they've grown up and are mature enough to understand it. Both films have rewatchability for different generations and that's what makes them great. The kids can laugh and sing with Mulan (1998) while parents can enjoy nostalgia. Mulan Rise of A Warrior can be something a parent shows a teenager when they start becoming wise to the ways of the world.
Mulan (1998) and Mulan (2009) are great films and I really want the latter dubbed and released in the west.

Would you believe that the budget for this movie was only 6.75 million USD, whereas the budget for the 2020 Disney remake was 200 million USD? However, the 2020 didn't have one decent battle scene, only showing groups of 10 or less soldiers. Compare that to the breathtaking battle formations in the 2009 movie. By the way, the Caucasian guy is a famous Russian singer, Vitas. Also, the "master" she greets on her triumphant return to her village is her martial arts master teacher, not the village master. Thanks for your intelligent and enjoyable review of this great movie. I watched it twice!

Really enjoyed listening to your review and analysis of this version of Mulan - I had watched this when it came out and it was a really big part of why I didn’t have much faith at all for the Disney remake.
To address some things you mentioned, Mulan isn’t actually a gendered name in Chinese. It can be used for a boy or a girl, which is why it doesn’t matter that she gave her actual name and they didn’t question it. Some people also mentioned in earlier comments that her rise in rank isn’t unusual given the time period this is set it. Ranks can often be pretty arbitrary when it comes down to it and they’re not justified like they are in most militaries today. Wen Tei hiding in plain sight over all those years isn’t too far fetched either; the armies are huge and generals/commanders are given a very wide berth by general infantry. As a result, it wouldn’t be hard to believe that none of the lower soldiers actually recognized his face because rank was denoted by their uniforms to be easily recognized on the battlefield and in general. And to tack onto that, this movie spans 12 years so her rise might not have been so fast but her glory is why the commander in chief betrays her out of jealousy.
All that aside, the scene with the horse was more emotionally investing than the entirety of the 2020 remake. Kudos again for the video!

Yeah I kind of interpreted as how many myths and ancient hero stories have sudden natural disasters in them to display the passion involved, like the gods themselves are descending. Though I can agree it's a little jarring considering how grounded the rest of the movie was.

For instance, an unexpected wind from which the term "Kamikaze" (God Wind) was first coined involved the Mongols' invasion of Japan being stopped three times by a wind nobody could predict. I wouldn't say it's that jarring when there's been quite a precedent for it in several military campaigns in history.

This film is far better than mulan 2020 and had a smaller budget too. That's cause they made a film with an actual character and stakes and gave payoff to the effort made not to mention mulan worked for her goal rather than it being given to her so her happy ending is earned. Also disney dishonor on your franchise dishonor on your lack of creativity and lack of forethought.

It was intense and brutal, but kept enough light to remain engaging throughout the entirety of its runtime. I find it also interesting that this Mulan shows greater strength AND more frailty than the new Mulan!

The fact that Mulan 2020 was directed by a woman who had less inexperienced about filmmaking & the character while Mulan: Rise of a Warrior was directed by 2 men. It show that men directed a female-led movies had better filmmaking & more understanding about the female character than women are(with the exception of Patty Jenkins who directed 2017's Wonder Woman which was good until she screwed Wonder Woman 1984 for some reasons).
I mean look at Alien directed by Ridley Scott and starred Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley. The sequel, Aliens directed by James Cameron turned Ripley into a main badass character. George Lucas also directed Star Wars and made Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia from a damsel in distress into a badass character in 2 sequels. Sarah Connor from Terminator, also turned into a badass character in the sequel, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, both directed by James Cameron. Heck, even Robert Rodriguez directed a movie where a female stripper turned into a badass character when she kills a bunch of zombies with her rifle..on her amputated leg! Oh! Let's not forget Alita the cyborg girl from Alita: Battle Angel directed by Robert Rodriguez himself and produced by James Cameron. The movie is freaking good and put Marvel's Captain Marvel in the MCU into shame.

The only criticism I have regarding the 1998 animated version is the scene in which Mulan cuts her hair. In ancient China, both men and women never cut their hair since they believed that their hair was a gift from their parents. Hence, cutting one's hair was the ultimate act of disrespect. The 2009 version is an absolute masterpiece. I have watched it several times.

I just finished watching the movie about an hour ago. It was very good! Bittersweet. Nothing like the Disney version. (The animated one, not the live action one.) But hey, most of Disney’s adaptations are far from the source material. If they weren’t, you’d have films like Hercules where he’s not the son of Zeus and Hera, but rather the bastard son of Zeus and a mortal woman.
But with that being said, it was well told, well acted, and a satisfying ending. Even if it was a bit bittersweet.

The name Mulan isn't that feminine. There were known warriors with "Lan" in their name. The one I can think of right away is Wu Lan from Liu Bei's faction. The surname "Hua" normally means flower and I am not sure if it can be used in other context. There's "Hua Rong" from "The Water Margin" but I think he is completely fictional.

There's also Hua Xiong, a general of Dong Zhuo killed by Sun Jian (or Guan Yu in fictionalised accounts such as The Romance of the Three Kingdoms). However, it's important to remember Chinese names have the surname first, so one's name starting with Hua would be fairly irrelevant regardless.

2009 Mulan: Rise of a Warrior is not perfect. So far, it is the best live-action of the tale put on film. It is a war film first where Mulan learns and grows and raises in ranks for her services for 12 long years versus other depictions where she fought only a few battles. Now, as China’s film is not political, I whole heartily respectively disagree. This film was funded with the support of the CCP. Here is where the irony is. The SJW of the West cried for no whitewash in Disney’s live-action Mulan, and so Disney cast only Asians in all the significant roles. For the CCP, in a brilliant move, they launched Vitas, a Russian singer who was popular at the time in China, to play the humble servant that will have a hand in the overthrown of a regime. Although Gud (Vitas) helped save a country he had come to love, he will always only ever be is a servant to China, hence his loyalty even when he was given freedom. Gud chose servitude over liberty for the government who gave him so much according to this blatant in your face political propaganda.

Considering that the freaking CCP, the supposed destroyer of Chinese culture as they all say with the Cultural Revolution, can do a better job in adapting her story than freaking Disney who goes out of their way to hire Asians but is simply just pandering and paying lip service, I’d say way to go CCP.
