Yeah its probably not travelling the full length it should, and only opening like 50%. Thise ram horn manifolds always seem to be present when theres creep too, it might be a coincidence but i doubt it, who knows 🤷
the problem with the KA was never the engine, it was the owners putting terribly small turbo's on the engine, choking it, which causes massive amounts of backpressure and heat which is what truly kills the engine. I think having the waste gate off for 1 pull answered your main question. It still held 10 psi, meaning the flow out of the gate's tubing was pretty minimal; the exhaust was taking the path of least resistance, in this case the flow was towards the turbo exhaust housing instead of the waste gate's exit
the exhaust scavenging might've also contributed to it going towards the turbo vs the gate (if the gate wasn't recirc'd) edit: I definitely would've thought your fix would've helped at least a little bit
Hey Jim and gang just wanted to say I’ve started an automotive apprenticeship program and am far ahead of a lot of the guys because of the lots of the info I learned from your channel. Makes it so much easier everyday when we’re hands on with parts and I can recognize the components and systems. Thank you so much keep doing what you guys do
its a trip to see different KA-T set up's. my set up has been a bottom mount pulsar gtx28 ball bearing. built bottom end with head springs. slightly lower compression and 800cc top feed injectors. Last dyno pull made 360tq/360hp on 91 pump. also nistune ecu that everyone seems to hate on. lol that thing ran for about 5 years boosted and 10years after rebuild. the only reason it spun a bearing was from neglect of the chain guide braking and sending plastic into the pick up tube. always beware of that chain rattle boys and girls. fix it before you find yourself rebuilding another block
Been making 362/360whp for years drifting on stock s14 ka,on link with e85 1050ccIDs, PSR gtx gen2 3071r .82 a/r on 16 psi, full race manifold lowest boost we could get was 13psi with 44mm gate. Send it jimmy she’s fine. Have the same setup on s13 ka too making 350/350 as well 15psi. Both drift cars that have been together for years hot lapping.
Rooting the gate back into the exhaust would probably help with the creep. Won’t sound as cool but would allow you to control the boost and torque in a safer way
It's not about a "less torque zone", it's about the rotational speed vs resistance. Just like Honda engines, over time people have discovered how much torque the stock rods can hold, at low-end high-load scenarios. That's why you use a dyno to stress the engine in multiple scenarios to make sure the ignition timing you are commanding does not yield too much torque on low-end high-load cells. Also, if you had a boost controller you could've pulled in more boost where needed, when using the smaller spring.
Exactly; it's about the dome pressure being put on a rotational mass that isn't moving very fast yet. Not only is that force trying to get the weight of that crank going it's also being aided more by the other pistons moving at a higher RPM. A low HP example would be the excessive (let's say more than average) side load cilinder wear that a single cilinder dirtbike has. Which often demands high torque down low in the rev range. Not being aided by the other cilinders every explosion tries to push the piston sideways into the cilinder wall. Give it enough pressure and that cilinder/piston will fail.
I love Jimmy! But Austin has been killing it on Filming, he is doing an awesome job grabbing the emotions of all the friends, the beauty of the cars in the background and even some slick product placement! Way to go AUSTIN!
The real issue is, no collector on the manifold before the turbo flange, to small of a collector causes creep. If you leave a big enough collector, you will have zero creep. Just fyi...
Pulsar turbos are absolutely amazing quality for the price. I have a PSR Gen3 GTX3584 on my 2jz-gt/e. I will buy 10 Pulsars before i ever buy a Precision or BW. Garrett n Turbosmart turbos are amazing but 3x the cost. For $700-1000 for a genuine dual ball bearing turbo PSR are awesome
Looks like the wastegate pipe is only relieving from 2 of the runners into the collector, only way to be sure is to fit it straight to the hotside or use a different manifold withthe collector before the wastegate pipe.
Lower the rev limiter to 6500 rpm. I noticed years ago that high rpm kills these poor ka’s quick especially at drift events And the s14 fixed this problem and factory it’s set at 6500 Also the s14 intake manifold makes better power and flows better with the s13 block ARP studs are a must Manly or eagle rods wiseco pistons Brian Crower Valve Spring and Retainer Kit and cams And you’ve got a 700hp motor you can beat on all day. I’ve had this setup in so many chassis and I’m still running it and my coupe I’ve had for 8 years and I can’t kill it
When you and Haze had some runs on the highway , The amount of respect I gained for KA’s after it walked the black coupe with the first 1j it had - had me juiced for brian! These motors are sick and I always loved the 1j but seems like the KA proven and more cost efficient
i think its time to get the red coop looking good with all the coops in the shop, its time to get yours looking great, i think a rocket bunny wide body will look amazing in the shop
What is the timing at? You mentioned it early on in the video and I think you were on the right track. Every time I've had a KA tuned it needed more timing than the tuner started with to stop the excessive exhaust gases from causing boost creep. More timing and you can control the boost better and actually make less power with the lower boost. Nothing wrong with that FutureFab manifold.
When going BPU (basic performance upgrade) on supra’s over here in the uk we have to run a restrictor in the exhaust to give some back pressure and reduce the gas flow to control the creep on stock turbos with large exhausts. The uk supras came with turbos that when 16 psi is exceeded the exhaust wheel falls off. Without the restrictor it will boost creep to over 20psi. Look up BPU restrictor ring
So if he had an Artec manifold, it would have better wastegate priority. The manifold he has is beautiful and sounds good, but you can tell the wastegate priority is not optimal
Would recirculating the waste gate help with creep ? My thinking is the main exhaust flow will cause a vacuum in the waste gate so when it opens there is a rush outward of pressure through the gate.
We have multiple ka-t’s here in the mid west that are bone stock making 330-380 on e85.. ones a 60-1 and one a psr gtx3071 .82 back housing. Both on link g4x.
