    We use bait boats here in the states but to solve that problem we just use cheap lazer spotting scopes to compare the distance down to a few inches. Seems to a bit quicker & a lot easier than that.

    I use an Actor budget boat to drop out my pike baits, (no carping here in Ireland) and I've been using a line counter on the rods and the baitrunners set to a light enough drag to just keep tension on the counter to stop the line slipping on the counter wheel...

      Hi mate, for me, it depends what depth of water you’re fishing over. Feeling the lead down works great in shallow water but if it’s deep, the swing back can mean your lead isn’t where your bait is.

    Evening Matthew a lot of places don’t allow bait boats do you think this a good or bad thing as some of the lake I have done later a lot of lines caught up in in the trees and the bushes or do you think it’s down to poor casting

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Keith, there’s no black or white answer for me. If there are trees to be cast to, there’ll always be line caught in them. I allow rowing boats, bait boats, baiting poles etc. and I still see lines in some very very strange places lol. Bait boat use would reduce this for sure but bait boats can be mis-used to the detriment of other anglers and the carp. At the end of the day every lake is different and the decision lies with the lake owners/managers as to what’s best for each water.

    • @matthewcollinsangler

      Hmm, you’d have to do the maths… pythagoras triangle. Depends on how far out you’re fishing. In 30ft of water, I’d use boilies only, and big ones, anything smaller is never going hit the bottom and will be spread over a massive area. The baits will spread out and your rig will probably end up on the outskirts of that ring of bait, which is just where you want it. Cheers, Matt

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi mate, good point, it depends when you put the line in the clip. If you put the line in the clip with the marker float on the surface, you’re right, you have to factor in the depth. If you wind the float down tight to the lead and put the line in the clip at this point, you eliminate the water depth factor. That’s the way I do it and what I show in the video, but maybe it’s not clear.

      Hi mate, I used to do that all the time but during Covid I ran out and I couldn't get any so I stopped doing it. My results never changed so I dropped the practice. The quality of PVA nuggets varies tremendously. Some are great, others are absolute rubbish and will cost you fish (I got some out of the lake this year after some guests had left and they still hadn't melted, just bobbed on the surface!). I would test them yourself, in a big bucket pinched onto a rig to simulate how you actually fish. It’s the only way to understand how they are working and whether they are helping or not. If I was fishing a weedy water, I’d consider using them but only if I didn't have a better option.

I like to use a heli setup most of the time, as you know so many places don't allow any leaders of any kind, I have my own way to set up a naked heli setup, even made a video of it. Would love it if you checked it out.. 😊. I would love your thoughts of a heli setup using tubing, I would prefer to use tubing Instead of naked mono.

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi mate, I watched the video. I understand what you are doing and I quite like it but I’d like to see the top bead come off easier. Various companies do a naked Heli setup. I know that the Nash Heli Sleeve works with rig tubing but they might not work the way you want it to work as the top bead holds the rig right down by the swivel. The only way to hold it in place further up the line would be to use some PVA tape. Looking at the distance the bead is from the swivel I take it that you have some serious weed or silt to contend with, hence the heli setup. It’s not a problem I face TBH which is why I only use a basic running rig. If I can feel the lead hit the deck then I’d happily use a running rig anyway. Sorry I can't be of more help but if you can find a sleeve that takes the rig tubing such as the Nash heli sleeve and then a system for controlling the top bead safely then you’ve got it cracked. Best of luck, Matt.

      Okay, I understand your concern but you’d know that from the type of drop you get. It also depends on the size of the feature and whether you mark the front or the back of it. If the feature is really small then there’s no way that you’d be able to accurately fish it with a bait boat anyway. The only way to do it is to row out and drop it by hand.
