I wish I had a camera person while doing this as some steps need 2 hands to complete and this makes some step very vague but the job can be done by a brave home mechanic for sure..
I had to replace my alternator on my 2007 Goldwing. That bottom screw was a bugger to get out but during re-installation (with the tank out), I was able to install & torque all the alternator bolts using 3 interconnected wobble socket extensions attached to a torque wrench located in the rear wheel well behind the swing arm.
i don't even know if others make them, but the amount of work to get in there to change it makes me think i should buy the best and never have to go back in.@@seatime674
now the altenator is a different story as it can be changed without too much trouble so an aftermarket part would be ok but i have heard poor performance stories on them also.@@seatime674
My motorcycle heats up very quickly at low speed, I have already changed the cap, coolant, checked the fans and changed only the thermostat but I still haven't changed the pump, do you think it is necessary? my mechanic never made that recommendation, I don't know if he did it in order to get paid for the job again
when my water pump failed it made a high pitched squealing noise at low rpm. The GL1800's will overheat in traffic conditions espectially when they are below 22 mph the air flow at these speeds is blocked because the fans are blowing forward and the movement of the bike is trying to force it the other direction until you get to 23 mph and fans turn off. this is what some call (parade mode) I have seen it twice happen on my bike and I just know to either turn it off in traffic or get off that road as quickly as possible to get the air flowing properly.
No overheating at all, but left idling it had a high pitch whistling sound And steam up from under engine cowl onto the windshield.. There is another TH-cam channel that has the sound to look for , it should come up in search easily. .,.......... thanks for watching...........JB..
Hi, thanks for watching, about 90,000 miles. it makes a high pitched squeeling noise at idle, not loud but steady until you rev it up and noise goes away. when the seal starts to leak it will leak into the crankcase so when you hear it change it soon..................JB..
@@Jarvisbiker Thanks. I have a 2017 GL with 14,750 miles on her that is over heating. The fans both come on but they don't cool the engine, the gauge hits the red zone and the fluid in the reservoir tank is boiling. Would you think the thermostat is bad?
@@robb8773 not sure, many questions 1. have you owned the GL since new? 2. if you ride the bike below 22 mph the airflow will deadlock and the bike will overheat once above 22 the fans shut off and air exits the side vents in the fairing. below 22 the fans try to blow the air forward out the front. 3. when does the overheating occur?
@@Jarvisbiker 1. Yes, owned since new. 2. The bike has never overheated in any condition. 3. it happens when going stop and go traffic or even if in neutral and keeping the revs at 2000 rpm the fans go on but the needle hits the red zone. It happened when going up MT. Washington too. It was overheating b/c the fluid was boiling in the reserve tank. I had the dealer change the fluid and same issue
@@robb8773 possibly thermostat but stop and go traffic is a normal overheating senario for the 1800/ they call this Parade Mode and stops being an issue when you get rolling above 21 mph at this speed the fans completely shut down and the movement of the bike keeps the air flowing through the rads. i didnt know my fans werent work for at least 6 months of owning my goldwing. I realized it when we were caught in traffic in Niagara falls. got home and investigated and fixed the left side fan was jammed with a chunk of asphalt and was blowing the fuse causing both fans to bot work. i guess in your case maybe thermostat is the next possible. The nightmare would be Head Gasket issues..

Im doing this job right now on my 02. I was able to sneak the waterpump out without uaving to remove the alternator or starter. It was definitely a tight squeeze

good video, and this shows we don't need a dealer for this.

Did your bike heat up before you changed the pump
No it just made a high pitched whining noise
What were the original symptoms, overheating I would guess was one of them.
