China - Steam Cranes, US built Mogul and Turning Triangle, Daban 2003

  • DABAN - The beating heart of the JingPeng Pass.
    NOTE: IS ANYBODY OUT THERE INTERESTED IN JOINING ME IN TRYING TO SAVE THE US MOGUL LOCO FEATURED AT 3:42 IN THIS VIDEO? IF SO PLEASE MESSAGE ME - NOW !!
    The steam depot at Daban marked the start and finish of the famous JingPeng Pass between there and the town of JingPeng, on the JiTong Railway. It was the point at which trains changed from single to double headed and was the main workshop for the whole line. The depot operated a large fleet of QJ class 2-10-2s and also a small number of steam cranes. On display in the centre of the depot was an obviously US built mogul tender locomotive of uncertain identity. It was wrongly marked by the staff as "Made in England", a mark apparently highly regarded in China ! I can only assume that this locomotive was in use during the construction of the JiTong line in 1995. It's history and classification seems to be unknown.
    The sequence closes with the departure of the express from Jining to Tongliao, the last timetabled steam express working in the world.
    Filmed in November 2003.

    There are already a few of the QJ class 2-10-2s saved around the world. That US built mogul, I think, is probably unique. My wife hails from a few miles down the road from there, so I'm hoping to be able to check out its current condition some time soon.

    Apparently, loco numbered 4335 and marked Made in England was originally China Rail "MG8 4335" built by Wilkes-Barre at Vulcan Iron Works (works number 2433), USA in 1918. It's current status is not known.

      If there's someone out there that would like to own 4335 ... just let me know. My wife and I will be out there in November. We'll go up to Daban and see if she's still available. I'm certain we could arrange to get her back to the USA. We did ship a C2 0-8-0 from China to the UK a few years ago. Just say the word!

    • @PereMarquette1223
      @PereMarquette1223 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You shipped an 0-8-0? Damn. Well why don't you get 4335 before the Chinese scrap her? Plenty of museums here would love to have her, considering there are 6 operating chinese locos in the states, 3 QJ's and 3 SY's I think we could take an American built steamer back from the Chinese. Like they would care, she's scrap metal to the Chinese. You should bring her back regardless. If you offered a Vulcan engine to any museum their ears would perk up. Vulcan locos are not that common in the states anymore, espcially larger models like this one.

      I'm going to Inner Mongolia with my wife (who's from there) in November. I'll try to get up to Daban depot to see if 4335 is still there. Need somebody to pay for it and its shipping though. Do what you can for me!!

    Would one consider that steam crane a locomotive? As far as I know it is self propelled and is equipped with couplers

    • @AndyDandanFisherSteam
      @AndyDandanFisherSteam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, yes, I guess it's a sort of locomotive. It is, as you say, self propelled but it's not built to move goods or people so isn't there to provide "locomotion". Maybe we're being a bit picky!! It's a fine machine that's for sure. We visited this depot again in November 2018 to take a look and they still have at least one of these steam cranes there, but not working.

      On a visit to Daban depot in November 2018, I discovered that they still had in excess of 10 QJ's although only 2 of these could be steamed with just a little work. They have a QJ and a steam crane plinthed at the entrance to the depot. The US mogul is now on display inside a museum/restaurant in the nearby town of Reshui. There is talk of making part of the line into a tourist line. I doubt this will happen. Andy

      All Chinese steam locos have been fitted with both horns and whistles for some years now. The whistles tend to be used for longer distance warning as the sound carries better. Around a yard, they tend to use the horns more.

The real damage is done by road vehicles and the generation of electricity. I'm guessing that you have a car and take hot showers - the same as I do !!
