This is what the iron mines in Minnesota would have looked like 90 years ago, with good sound and video quality. Thanks for the trip in the Wayback machine!
@@danielthoman7324 70 years ago (1950) Oliver Iron Mining was almost fully dieselized. The other mining companies in Minnesota had pretty much all switched to trucks.
The mine closed and it might be a park now. You can still find it on google earth. The rails were lifted from the Sandaoling opencast mine a few months ago and trucks now do the work.
Moving track in a rail pit like this is pretty much a full time job. At Minntac in the 70's in Minnesota we had about 450 people on various track gangs.
It's "KNOWN reserves", y'see... According to some earlier "predictions" about oil reserves we should have run out of it by the '90s - which, AFAIK, did not happened.
Lignite ( Brown Coal). MAKES Briquetes mixed with Black coal dust and coal tar. Low Quality BTUs,but easily excavated by open cut. This mine has a Zig-Zag track system, rather than a Spiral System ( mine is Rectangular rather than circular.
I would love to run that drag line for a day, let them know I'm available, 1 week free labor. Lots of Wonton, egg rolls, and the big drag line and all the beautiful chinese woman. Of course my japanese wife would be PISSED OFF.
Those ending scenes seem like they're from another world. A huge pit in a bleak landscape with multiple working steam engines.

The long shots at the end showing all the trains at once are amazing
Wonderful memories. Nicely captured.
Would like to see the shops where they work on these engines, maintaining them.
This seems like a glimpse of what the panama canal once looked like
Loving thiss stuff this morning - thank you for heading out there and getting all this great stuff.

A great advantage of steam locomotives is that they bear in on all your senses that real work is really being accomplished.
Just got back from visiting Zhalai Nuoer. Sad to say there is no steam left. The last steamer SY1618 was gone.
Wonderful filming.. Thanks so much for posting this. The final scenes are stunning! I expect it's all long dieselised by now?> And Sandaoling as well?

Magnificent video!
You had some high quality equipment for 2008, looks like you're really there.

Steam locomotives didn't fade out in the USSR, they all faded when the USSR dissolved.
Huge rail network in that mine. Great video. Subbed.☘️👍
Wundervolle erstklassige Aufnahmen !!! Richtig Klasse !!! Danke
Surprised by old excavator from the former USSR (made by Ural plant of heavy machinery-making)

Interesting that they use an air horn instead of a whistle.
are they mining coal ? I noticed a comment on here about west Virginia which I assume was about coal mining, and open mining .
Yes.
China says, if your looking for stem engines, we got steam engines, lots of steam engines! real working steam engines, lots of them!
All the same it seems 2-8-2s.
Good TA the chapter of Thomas and friends in the quarry 🤯
pity i was enjoying the sound of steam you just can not beat it the smell must have been awsome
Why do the steam engines have air horns attached?
Because they are "new" chinese steamers - 20 to 40 years old.
That is not Air horn
It is not Air horn.Steam in high pressure coming through a horn.
SP 4449 and MILW 261, PRR S1 and Sierpc Express they have airhorns
MILW Hiwatha
AWESOME video, shame steam has stopped.
Does they regularly change the tracks

How much coal does Chinah ave left? I heard they only have 30 years worth of reserves!!!

Woundful old Locamotives they look well cared for. Mostly White exhaust says it.
I wonder that the bagger isn't steam powered... but it looks like a steam bagger ;-)
That is what they call 'carbon credits' in China.
China steam Railways very nice.

Still using excavators from CCCP
Chris Li Did you mean USSR
It says CCCP on the excavator.
