THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT! TYPHOON HIGH PERFORMANCE TAKE OFF VERTICAL CLIMB AILERON ROLL • RAF CONINGSBY

- Watch this fantastic PTO (Performance Takeoff) from the 2024 RAF Typhoon Display Pilot Flt Lt David "Turbo" Turnbull of 29 Squadron. This really shows off the thrust to weight ratio of the Eurofighter Typhoon.
Performance departures at RAF Coningsby are reminiscent of the English Electric Lightning, which would leave any spectator stunned as the Lightning would climb and accelerate vertically within seconds. Count how many seconds it takes for the Typhoon to not ONLY get airborne, but when it pulls back to accelerate vertically.
Both the Typhoon and English Electric Lightning had similar performance where the thrust to weight ratios of both aircraft were a 1:1 ratio, allowing the aircraft to accelerate vertically. The Lbs of thrust produced from the aircraft was more than the weight in Lbs of the aircraft. Of course, the more payload, the less acceleration, but with this sort of power, it doesn't bother them too much.
Aircraft have to request a Performance departure, they are not allowed to execute it without the clearance from ATC. There are many reasons for PTO, such as a short runway, clear aircraft traffic, barriers, problems on runway, or even just to get to somewhere fast.
Reheats or Afterburners?
Both are the same thing but “Afterburners” is a US term and “Reheats” is a UK term.
Not all PTO's (Performance Take Off) mean that they go into vertical climb on departure, because some are simply a real or a practice QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) style departure. A QRA is a scramble to intercept threat to UK airspace.
RAF Coningsby, TED HQ, in Lincolnshire is one of two RAF Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) Stations which protect UK airspace. RAF Lossiemouth is the other. There is also a third out in the Falkland Islands at RAF Mount Pleasant which 1435 Flt protect the airspace there.
29 Squadron are based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, one of two Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) stations in the UK. During World War One, 26 of the pilots had achieved 'Ace' Status. Aircraft flown have included the Mosquito, Phantom and Tornado F3. Today, 29 Squadron are known as an Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) who train RAF combat air pilots on the Typhoon, ready for front-line operations.

Thank you Ted Coningsby, brilliant captures of our "Turbo the Superbo". Turbo & 29 Squadron, thnx too. To you all ❤ on behalf of Ted Coningsby Squadron.
Oii Oii Margo thank you so much for the super
"Go Turbo!" Our Superbo does it again, to everyone's delight. Goodness me, what a fine pilot he is ❤. Jaw dropping flying again & again. What an inspiration to those budding pilots out there & an inspiration to us all...we can reach for the stars if we put our minds to it. Marvellous.
Oiii oiii Margo. You don’t get many PTOs like this! What a take off ooohhh yeah
Just incredible! The pilots skill and stamina is just off the charts!
Oii Oii Ellesee
What a pilot and what an amazing Aircraft..Thanks again Nikos and Ted Coningsby OOH YEAH
Oii Oii Ian 🤙🏼
Just incredible to witness that Turbo PTO. He can throw a Typhoon. Such control. That must hurt. He can show his skills off anytime. Great footage Ted and Nikos. Sunday morning insanity he he
Turbo sending it proper innit
... how the Electric Lightning used to do it ✌🔛
the EE Lightning is one of my cold war favourite jets pity none are still flying but the typhoon replicates the virtual climb just as good as a 1960s aircraft! I used to live near warton airbase uk when the typhoons engines was on test they are noisy things I could hear them 1 mile away from where I lived!
@@justinobrien3593 -- jets that should have been evolved, modernized, upgraded and imho, kept in production still today: EE Lightning, Draken, F-106, F-14, Jaguars, M2000, Avro Vulcan 🗯✌
Yes I agree , but the climb did ot accelerate as quickly and as aggressively as the old lightnings of my days on 74 sqdn and 56sqdn as an engine fitter .the good old days in singapore and Cyprus.
Thanks for everything you do - I'd missed these on a live stream and never had time to go back and watch, so really appreciate when highlights are posted
Oii oiii Techie thanks man
Brilliant start to my Saturday morning - Thank you Ted and Nikos
Oii oiii
In 1964 I was at RAF Gaydon which was an open flying display on Battle of Britain anniversary., one thing I remember was the leader of Belgium airforce Fougar magisters display team flying down the runway inverted at a hell of a rate and very very low. On the sunday I was on visiting aircraft disperal team, I remember a USAF "thud" (F105/) pulling onto runway engaging reheat and it was away, got airborne went into a very steep climb, next kite was a lightning it whipped onto runway engaged reheat and shot off, airborne in a much shorter distance and climbed away like a rocket, caught up the Thud then preceeded to keep out climbing it whilst actual circling around so was flying a corkscrew pattern flight path. My god it was impressive.
Party piece for a Lightning.
Saw a similar climeout at Wattisham maybe in early 70's.
Great effort ! Keep it up 👍 ✈️
Fantastic ❤
What a PTO Just awesome!
Big congrats on the 58k subs👏👏
Oii Oii Colin thank you so much
Ooooh Yeah!!!absolutely Fantastic, thank you Nikos and Ted
Oii oiii Andy 🤙🏼
Nice work! Just to keep the plane centered at such high speed isn't easy. Hats off to our British friends from the USA!
Oii oiii thank you very much 🇺🇸
Great capture, awesome machines. Thanks Nikos👊👋
Beautiful
Go Turbo what a pilot
Crikey! That's amazing!!
That is a great pull up of the Typhoon 😊
Would´ve loved to see in person! 😍
Q: Are pilots allowed to show some sort of individual perks?
Could be imagining things, but on our local AFB there's one Tornado Pilot who does the loudest take-offs. They´re all loud, but one always stands out :D
In some ways yes. So for the official sequence it needs to be safe and with manoeuvres that will pass the authorities. There are plenty to choose from but depending weather the airshow has a runway or not, a pilot can start or end the display in a special way. Ultimately, a pilot can make the sequence unique but again, needs to pass the PDA (Public Display Authority approval)
@@TedConingsby Thanks for taking your time to reply! I think you're doing a great job spreading appreciation for flyboys and military personnel :)
100% the best fighter jet ever
Thrust! Thrust cannot be replaced by anything.
When air traffic control forces you to head out South...but you own a Eurofighter so you head out North inverted 🤣
From the RAF 'Phoon manual.
"Unrestricted Takeoff:
1: Strap in
2: Light blue touch paper
3: look up
4: Nod knowingly to your appreciative audience
5: when at chosen height slip to level flight smoother than a greased ball bearing.
6: Empty trousers if necessary.
Brilliant captures as always Nikos but thanks to Ted the director of operations!
Brilliant
gravity -- what gravity ? :)
Oohhh yeah
Just goes to show you need a "Turbo Boost" now and again! Great stuff thanks to all concerned...
Oii Oii Roy
Knockout!! 🥰
