RAF PILOT DEMONSTRATES MANOEUVRABILITY OF THE EUROFIGHTER TYPHOON AT ONLY 500FT PRACTICE DISPLAY

- Flight Lieutenant David "Turbo" Turnbull is taxiing in 'Blackjack' for his twelfth practice display set with a hard deck of 500ft. With weather like the Caribbean here in Lincolnshire (slight exaggeration but we haven't seen the sun in ages), Turbo delivers the best practice display so far.
We normally expect to hear callsign ANARCHY1 when it comes to the RAF Typhoon display pilot, however, this year, the display pilot's callsign is "TURBO"! Our display pilots nickname is 'Turbo' but is it not Anarchy1? We knew that this year was going to be different and TURBO is the new callsign for the display pilot, which has been borrowed from Lossiemouth's 6 Squadron.
This year's 2024 Typhoon Display Pilot, David "TURBO" Turnbull will be doing his first set of 10 practice displays at 1,500ft and then will lower it to 500ft hard deck before being allowed to smack it right down to 100ft. Once you hear callsign TURBO1, there will be excitement. However, Turbo will also be carrying out practice displays around the country, this is to prepare him and get used to performing displays away from the home base, which is what airshow season is all about. Before Turbo will be allowed to display at airshows, he will need to achieve and obtain his PDA (Public Display Authority). Without this insurance, he will not be able to display at airshows and venues. The other responsibility is once a pilot obtains a PDA, they cannot go more than 10 days with some sort of display, whether practice or real world at air shows. Failing this would result in having to re-apply for a PDA.
The Typhoon Display Team work-up begins with the selection of the Display Pilot, usually in Oct/Nov of the preceding season. The selection is conducted by the Officer Commanding (OC) 29 Squadron, Station Commander (Stn Cdr) RAF Coningsby and the Combat Air Force Commander (CA FC) with the final decision being made by Air Officer Commanding (AOC) No 1 Group (1 Gp). The selection is based on previous experience and ability as a Typhoon Pilot. Currently the Display Pilot is selected from the Qualified Pilot Instructors serving on 29 Squadron, the Typhoon Operational Conversion Unit (OCU).
Once selected the new Display Pilot shadows his predecessor for the end of the season and has the opportunity to fly in display practices flown at RAF Coningsby for currency. During this time the Display Pilot is tasked with designing their display sequence. The sequence is usually made up of previously approved aerobatic manoeuvres that can be flown in Typhoon. New manoeuvres require AOC 1 Gp to approve them. The Display Pilot must design not only a Full Display but also a Limited and Flat sequence used in the event of poorer weather.
During sequence development the Typhoon simulators are used to check the sequence before the airborne work-up is started. The simulator is also used throughout the work-up to prepare the Display Pilot for bad weather (including strong winds) and to practice aircraft handling in the unlikely event of an emergency during a display to ensure complete safety for the crowd.
The work-up continues progressively stepping down base heights from 1500ft to 500ft. A predefined number of practises at each height is to be achieved. At the final display height of 500ft, level turns and flypasts can also be conducted at 300ft and 100ft respectively.
The end of the work-up is the awarding of the Public Display Authority (PDA). AOC 1 Gp personally visits RAF Coningsby watches the display, reviews the work-up and if content grants the Display Pilot PDA, meaning they can then demonstrate the outstanding performance of Typhoon in front of crowds of hundreds of thousands of people during the summer display season.

No disrespect to previous display pilots but this guy is the best I’ve seen in a Typhoon ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I watched 1435flt every Thursday doing approaches to Stanley Airport and invited them down to goose green club for a weekend bash when on tornadoes . Much respect for any pilot but amazing bravery every time they fly . Skillfully done sir
That’s one place myself and Nikos need to go. There are no restrictions and the Phoons run free
Yeah I've watched all four types aircraft there over the years the phoon is the most gracefull you guys put your life on the line all the time much respect . Sound of freedom ive not seen a typhoon in ages skipton in a valley lol 😆 I've heard but not seen . I love the low flying you guys do .I remember looking down at pilots at hillcove they were trying to get to byron without being detected I reckon awesome
Magnifique démonstration des avions et pilotes Anglais ! Belles images !
Rafale is from the same stable 🇬🇧🇫🇷
@@clives344 Bonjour, je suis d'accord avec vous, mais j'ai toujours eu une grande estime pour les pilotes Anglais, ceux qui on volé pour la RAF et leurs aviation. J'ai admiré cette présentation 👍
Awesome, pure brilliance in a flawless display, thank you Flight Lieutenant David "Turbo" Turnbull and to all the men and women for building such a wonderful machine and to Ted Coningsby for excellent camera work.
Thanks Martin
Wow awesome. The negative G push at about 7:32 was just superb!
Utter pleasure watching that back. Turbo in Blackjack.. Rock n Rolling it. Spluffage at every turn. Plenty of the noise I love. The roll into Max Alpha gets better, smooth as in transition. This was Ace!! That's 4 times I've watched today ohhh yeahh.
Blackjack ❤ display always gets me involved..
More fantastic flying from Turbo, great to see him down to 500ft and still looking just as epic as the 1st time we saw his display, Looked like a wonderful day at Coningsby today.
Ooohh yeah
Was a superb display & was in a perfect position to view as well. Absolutely loved it!
Oii Oii Mark thanks man
Brilliant. I'm involved with the production of these aircraft and it's ace seeing them in action like this 👍
Oii Oii Andrew thank you so much for being a part of these. It must be amazing to see them fly
Turbo the Superbo nailed it again, magnificent! Max Alpha my absolute favourite manoeuvre, brilliant. Blackjack received her continued workout, including a bit of a jig on her way back 🤣🤣. Genius!! Goodness me, I am still trying to calm down after another fantastic day at RAF Coningsby. Thank you RAF, 29 Squadron & our Ted & Nikos, superb.❤
Turbo time , phoon time, ooooooooohhhhhhh yeah it’s time to riiiiiide
The practice display by Turbo was marvellous in Blackjack manouvering so quickly in the sky tracked so well there Nikos.
Oii Oii Edward he is just awesome
And all manoeuvres here for display to spectators are not used in combat, what’s your point?
Worth a Super Chat Ted & Turbo! ❤
Oii Oii thanks Margo for the super thanks ooohh yeah
Woh!, really suberb and total respect to the pilot, as well as all the ground crew, as well as all those involved in design over sereral decades as total respect from beginning and construction of a amazing British aircraft.
Impressed. That plane, if needed, wins all day in close combat.
So, never? If you Dogfight in 2024 you doing something wrong with your aircraft!
Just absolutely awesome flying from "TURBO" OOH yeah ❤
Thanks Ian
@TedConingsby your so welcome buddy...
One Pilot said "It climbs like a homesick Angel!"
Stunning skills by both the pilot and Nikos……both legends in their own roles ❤🫡
Thank you so much man. We are proud of both nikos and turbo
Oh wow! Blackjack looking quite ethereal in that spluffage! Great flying by Turbo. Superb display 👏🏻
Ooohhh yeah
Thank you for that. Can't wait to see him at the riviera air show. Will see him twice, sat and sun. Fingers crossed weather will be great. And the red arrows make their entrance over the top of our house. Got goosebumps thinking about it. 😂 thank you again for your channel. 🐻
I've loved all of Turbos predecessors displays but somehow what I've just seen there looked so much more dynamic. Transitions from one manouvre to the other were awesome and deffinitely some moves I've not seen pulled off like that before. This season is going to be fantastic and top camera work as always from Nikos 💪👍
Than you Ted & Nikos another display I watched in awe and wonder. He is simply
the best thank you Turbo and lovely to see Black Jack in all its glory.

Ooohhhhhhhhh yeah
Wow, crazy display from Turbo, Kind of wish I'd have done my trip to Coningsby a week later, having said that I'd have missed the reds, so can't win either way. So much spluffage in that display. Great video as always Ted!
0:29 that was amazing call sign should be reheat 02 or fluffage number 1 extremely well flown
A tremendous maneuver demonstration of the Eurofighter Typhoon as it looks awesome on the condensation!!! 🤩😊

Oii Oii Timothy thank you very much
I had my bones rattled by a low flying vulcan at scraptoft Air display back in the 80's...what a beast...your film took me right back to the thrill I felt then...wishing I was up there with them..holding a puke bag 😆
Awesome!
Fabulous footage - and what a fantastic sound this jet makes!
Thank you very much
Amazing Nicos, as always
I was in the UK last year near an old abbey in yorkshire I belief and a euro fight came above my head around 150 ft at slowish speed and I waved at the pilot ..it freaked me out how low and slow he was and then he just after- burned it away ...crazy
U wanna live here..gets bloody noisy sometimes. ESPECIALLY when an exercise is taking place.. R A practice all d time which can b cool
LOVE this plane just because it is so nimble... and the canard is cool.... and the guy flying has it down pat ! ...10/10 in my book.
Oiii oiiii thank you
Spectacular Display!😎🤟🤟
For me, this is still the best looking fighter jet in the skies, what a machine 💪
Ooohhh yeah
A beautiful aircraft. Well flown and well filmed!
Oii oiii Jim thank you so much
Great video once again...thanks.❤
Blue Sky, sunshine and an awesome typhoon display .....what more do you need
Outstanding video!!
Niiice! Great spluffage there too!
Ohhh yeah
Brilliant Nikos
Thank you
Love how it can go sexy slow and still be able to perform a loop speeding out of it
An excellent video. Thanks. At 6:00 (approx), what roughly is the speed of the aircraft? (The Tornado was revered for the fact that it could trundle at 200 knots, but with the wings back it could exceed 1,400, and I remember being hugely impressed by such engineering wizardry). Amazing (as you comment) to see the Typhoon nearly floating along.
Oii Oii John. The speed is about 90knots
@@TedConingsby And there was me thinking it seemd as "low" as about 150! Astonishing. Both the aircraft and pilot. Thanks for the reply 👍😀
What an amazing display that was by Turbo... Just simple AWESOME
Oiii oiii Jimmy
Wow, that was deeply impressive - what a talented pilot 👍
He sure is
In 100 years time this kite will resemble the biplanes of the early 1900's
I was just wondering what the spitfire pilots would think of this type of technology. It's not that long ago that they were being taught to fly in a couple of weeks, doubt if that would be possible now.
You can say that about any tech.
Definitely need to get to a seaside airshow for this display!
Awesome no other words love it !
Thanks Jane
I think the sky needs a seamstress, as Turbo has torn it apart here!
Ooohh yeah
Outstanding!
1:39 the typhoon emerging in and out of that cloud was very cinematic
WOW x insane piece of equipment
Oohhh yeah
I go fishing at South Summercoats and you can here them firing the mini guns on some days that beerrrrrr is a mad sound
Goooooooo turbo 🔥❤️
What an amazing outstanding aircraft and pilot FANTASTIC!!
Thanks Cliff
See the tyhoon display at the Royal International Air tattoo this summer looking forward to the euro fighter
Ooohhh yeah
Man he bossed that sucker amazing what energy is in paraffin when compressed
It's amazing how those things don't break apart in mid air.. 😲
Skilful feat of engineering
awesome display turbo one of ur best
Ooohhhh yeah
Absolutely awesome!
Just got in from work & catching up.
Great work fro Ted, Nikos and of course "Turbo Turnbull"
Thanks Colin.
Hello Nikos,I understand your point the practice demo is not for combat merely to demonstrate the Typhoons capabilities to spectators .
Oiii oiii Edward thank you very much
Some piloting that 😮😮😮😮
Wow just wow that's amazing
Thank you
Top Class.
Best display of a Typhoon I ever saw was at Southend airshow (I think it was the last one they had or the one before) but that thing could really move as it was let off the leash as it were a bit more than on land airshows.
Although it does sound amazing , i think all these should come with cockpit radio as standard . Beautiful blue sky ......the weather's fantastic today......perfect conditiins for flying ... just look at that lovely blue sky... ect ect ect ect . Ect 🙄😬🙏
Oohh yeah
Beautiful ❤
Ooohh yeah
Got this on my boom box my poor Neighbors Banging on my door 😂
Hehe
Sounds much more aggressive from this angle 🥵 can you film displays from this location more often please or CG 1
Thank you
Saw blackjack and turbo on flightradar yesterday
All I can say is... WOW.
Oohh yeah
She’s working hard …..venting that fuel hell yer
spluffage galore today, brilliant
Oooohhh yeah thanks Babs
Now if only we had gone ahead and done the vector nozzle variant, i honestly dont think any other aircraft would be as manoeuvrable as the Typhoon.
I guess it wasn’t required operationally so didn’t need it, it has a superb turn rate 🤙🏼
Damn hes good.
Unbelievable!!
Such a pretty bird
Hey bud love the video think you caught a ufo it's at 7 minutes and 42 seconds you should have a look.
SL T Coningsby that was awesome, thanks to your servant aka Nikos oi oii.
Look forward to seeing it for real at RIAT
Thanks Julie
niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice !
2:02… wow
One fit pilot, pulling all them g's.
crazy
RAF best in the World!
That guy is having some serious fun. I wouldn't like to be a Russian Orc in a dog fight with him.
nothing ,no video can ever give you the feeling of power these jets have you have to go watch them the sound is like nothing you have ever experienced
It is the world to people who cannot make it for health, logistics and other reasons.
@@TedConingsby im sorry to hear that my friend i never wanted to offend any one
I made that.
If anyone finds my Mole gripps in a fuel tank they can keep them. 😄
Of all the combat aircraft in service today the Typhoon, IMHO, is the most menacingly ugly/beautiful machine around both in the air and on the ground where it just strikes a pose of something along the lines of "C'mon then if you think you're 'ard enough" or maybe "Beware, I have anger control issues". The most beautiful/menacing ever has to be the Victor bomber.
What would I give to have not been colour blind, to have the other physical and mental attributes required to pilot something like that. I was in the Army element of the Harrier force back in the 70's - to use an Americanism - "Awesome". I guess if had the attributes then it would have been the likes of the Buccaneer/Phantom/Jaguar/Harrier/Tornado maybe even the Lightning would have been putting the smile on my face and the purpose in my life.
I really do feel robbed by genetic accident of what I should have been put on this earth to do. Much respect to all fast jet pilots (of any friendly nation) and matched only by my envy and admiration of you gentlemen.
Oiii oiii thanks for your comment. Nice selection of aircraft mentioned there. Thanks for serving our country
Till this day the raf will whoop any fighter planes out there🤣🇬🇧🥶
Mustard ❤❤❤👍👍
Come on Turbo
Give it plenty 20,000lb of thrust and he throws it around
Oii Oii Ann thank you
👍👍👍👍👍
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍🏻
Stable in the corners innit, he didn't even slow down or nuffink......
RAF are still the best 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Oohh yeah
