  • The iPad Mini is all-new for 2021. Apple has redesigned the hardware with a larger 8.3-inch display, replaced the Lightning port with USB-C, and added support for the second-generation Apple Pencil. Pricing starts at $499 for the 64GB Wi-Fi-only model and $649 for the 5G-enabled cellular version.

I very much agree with the reviewer about the iPad mini size in such an ergonomic manner that it provides a very good balance between engaging with your device while giving room for open social engagement at the same time. It avoids the personal isolation when using an iPhone and even "movie mode" in an iPad Pro .
It's so perfectly right in size

I’m definitely looking at it serving as my media outlet when I’m chilling in bed or on the couch. Netflix, Disney+, social media or browsing the web etc to give my iPhone a break from always being used for TH-cam, Twitch and the other streaming services and I’ll definitely get some note taking in with the Apple Pencil 2. Definitely excited to receive it.

i'm getting one of these soon. i used to have an old 3rd gen ipad, which was great, but even as i grew it was just too big and heavy for me. i know the new ipads are lighter and thinner now but the overall footprint is basically the same and isnt a device i feel comfortable tossing into a bag or carrying in one hand. i recently got an old 2nd gen mini off of ebay for cheap to try out, and needless to say, i love the form factor. i can be so much more productive with it than i can with my phone, but still have the portability and convivence of something smaller than my laptop. not to mention that it actually fits into my baggy sweatpants pockets. and since it has the newest, insanely powerful A15 chip, i have no doubt that this tablet will last be a very very long time.

I adopted the iPad as my main computer in 2016, the first Pro pushed me over the edge. Without a work laptop a 13" screen was a great compliment to my desktop for meetings an travel. Since then I have been given a 13" laptop and the mini has been my favourite computer since late 2019. This updated model means I now only need one pencil which is nice and I can use all my USB-C accessories. This might spell the end for my 2018 12.9 Pro.

I've been using the iPad Mini 6 since launch day last week. It's a lovely machine with meaningful upgrades. I like that because the aspect ratio has changed that videos in widescreen are now bigger and the borders are smaller. I've not noticed the jelly scroll issue with my unit. Also very strange to see flash paired with a good camera on unit. It works great as a torch!! (there is now actually a shortcut for this when you swipe from the top right like iPhones).

This is the device I’ve wanted since the beginning of the pandemic and the start of working primarily from home. Now that work calls happen exclusively on my mobile phone, and I don’t have to be tethered to my desk, I take a lot more calls while walking through the neighborhood. And in my business, there are a lot of calls. It’s great to have something easy to hold that can slip easily into a back pocket or jacket pocket that’s connected to cellular so I can actually do some basic cloud computing while I’m strolling about. I know that’s a random use case for most people, but it’s a big quality of life thing for me. I ordered immediately after Apple’s keynote and have been enjoying it a lot. It fits into my work life exactly as I had hoped, and its also an excellent evening device for watching movies, reading the news, etc. It is also a much better media consumption device to pair with my laptop when traveling. My previous tablet, an 11” iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard was almost the same size as my 13” laptop, and it added a lot of bulk to my bag.

I loved media consumption on Nexus 7 so iPad Mini is very tempting, especially that is perfectly capable of more ambitious tasks like processing raw files from camera on the go in lightroom etc. But I just can't justify the price/storage ratio for what I would use it. You can get thin small laptop like hp envy, with more storage, which covers all use-cases and more, for the same price.

It's a textbook and comic book device. If it has more phone features, then it would definitely destroy the enterprise market

i love this new ipad mini 6 only things that i dont like is the software of how the widgets are tiny and the apps are not spread out that much and looks crammed i liked how it was in ios 14 better and the volume buttons on the top are a little weird too!

Really niche case, but at the lab I work in we use Avidien 96 channel pipettors (they cost like ~$15k) and they are all controlled by little iPad minis in a dock. So think there is a big market for little niche devices like that.

  • @Liafram

So many of the complaints are levelled squarely at the software -- which is totally valid. That Apple still hasn't implemented some of the most basic features (like family profiles) is baffling.

I love the form factor of the Mini, which is why I have used a second generation mini.since they first came out. I have a keyboard case on it, and I used it as my work laptop. It still functioned as such, but I could see how a smart pencil would be useful for taking notes in meetings, so a couple of months ago I bought a gen 5 Mini. It’s fantastic! I love the multi tasking capability, and the pencil has been even more useful than I had expected.
So would I buy a gen 6 Mini?
    No.
Why? First of all, because of the price. I got my 5 at Best Buy new for $299. The 6 costs sooooo much more! The 5 does far more than I need it to, so why would I pay more fir stuff I won’t use?
Secondly, I prefer the 5’s form factor, probably because I used the 2 for so long. When I tried a 6 out the bevels were too small, and I kept touching the screen when I didn’t mean to.
Finally, I use the Mini because I need something that I can easily use in multiple environments. In the rain, or on a boat. That means using a clear waterproof dry bag. When doing so, the home button is easy to use. The 6’s top button, not so much.
So I will just stick with my Mini 5 for now. In 8 years or so I might start thinking about upgrading again.

I got the base model on sale at Best Buy for $100 off MSRP. that’s cheaper than apple refurbished by $20. The pencil was also only $90, vs $110 refurbished or $130 new. I’m going into college, and will use this as a mini-notepad and a 2nd screen for my MacBook. The desks I use aren’t big enough for a 13” and an 11” second screen, plus paper.

I wish they’d add the option to disable quick notes when you’re not using a apple pencil. I know quick notes can be disabled with apple pencil use. With the screen size being much smaller than my 12.9 inch iPad, I always accidentally swipe up for quick notes using my finger. One other wish I have is for them to make the background darker in Safari when you’re in the tab preview window screen (pops up when you pinch in a page or tap the 4 square looking icon in Safari).

I honestly wish there was a keyboard folio for this iPad. Sure, it probably would possibly be cramped and maybe a little ridiculous, but I haven’t disconnected my keyboard folio from my 10.2-inch iPad Air, like, ever. I don’t even do work with the thing… it’s just a better way of interfacing (keyboard shortcuts) and typing messages (without worrying about typos) when I’m not using the touch screen for, well, touch screen things. A smaller iPad with a smaller keyboard would be just that much more easy to take along with me in scenarios where the iPad Air might be a bit too big or obnoxious.

For me it’s the combination of an iPad Air 2020 and IPhone 11 (as a mini) to help me in all the ways - power, portability, computing device - sheets, docs, reading, editing, gaming and watching content.
Why even go for a mini.
I think it’s basically for children as their primary device - but again for that amazing price for 256gb - it’s a very very hard recommendation for hardly anybody. A great powerhouse but hard to recommend. Instead the Air with more screen estate is (trust me) really worth it - for all that an iPad is capable of
And if you want a portable device to carry on your work from the iPad - you have an iPhone 🤷‍♂️
It’s a pocketable beast of a device - where almost everything can be done - whenever you are moving around or stuck in tight places or want to carry a single device
